Microsoft powers a DJ’s live show with a Surface Book and Kinects

When it comes to live shows, the visuals are key to making a lasting impression. I’d even argue that what you see is just as important as the quality of the music. It is a performance, after all. Touring musicians employ all kinds of A/V gear in an a…

Details About RED’s Hydrogen One Smartphone Revealed

High-end camera maker RED recently announced that it’s also making a smartphone. Called Hydrogen One, the company claimed that this $1,200 smartphone will feature a new “holographic display.” RED didn’t reveal much information about the handset back then but it handed a couple of prototypes of the device to YouTuber Marques Brownlee so some new details about the handset have now been revealed.

The different prototypes that Brownlee got to play around with included a non-working unit that shows what the final unit will look like, a prototype that showcases the holographic display, and a prototype that was a full, separate camera module packed with its own lens and sensor.

Brownlee says that the Hydrogen One is almost the same size as an iPhone 7 Plus which is a good sign since RED will be packing it full with high-tech internals. It’s going to be a flagship handset after all.

It has also been revealed that the handset’s power button will function as the fingerprint sensor as well. The Hydrogen One features a dedicated video record button, stereo speakers on the front, a dual camera on the back, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

It seems that Brownlee wasn’t allowed to show off the holographic display to the public because he blurred the phone out when he was using that prototype. His assessment of the display is that it creates a “crazy, deep, sort of 3D look.”

You can find out more about the RED Hydrogen One by checking out his video that’s embedded above. The handset will cost $1,200 when it arrives later this year.

Facebook Will Prioritize Faster Loading Webpages In News Feed

Facebook continues to tweak the News Feed where its billion-plus users spend most of their time. Over the past few months we’ve seen the company make changes in order to surface more relevant stories and posts for users while pushing down spammy content. It has heard from users that it’s frustrating to click on a link that leads them to a webpage that’s slow to load. That’s why Facebook has now announced that pages that load faster will be ranked higher in News Feed.

An update will be made to the News Feed in the coming months which will show people more stories that will load quickly on mobile and fewer stories that may take longer to load. This will help users spend more time reading the stories that they find relevant.

After this update, Facebook will start to take into account the estimated load time of a webpage that someone clicks to from any link in News Feed on the mobile app.

It will consider factors such as the user’s current network connection and general speed of the webpage in question. If the signals indicate to Facebook that the webpage loads quickly, that webpage may be shown higher in the News Feed.

Facebook is going to roll out this change gradually over the next few months. It anticipates that most Pages won’t see any significant changes to their reach in News Feed.

Google Chrome Kills Vibrating Ads

With the latest build of Chrome, Google has taken care of a particularly annoying type of ad that no doubt irks mobile users if they ever come across it. Vibrating ads are the type of ads that hijack a user’s smartphone and make it vibrate while they try to close the page. It’s bad user experience and you rarely find ads of that type on legitimate websites. The latest build of Google Chrome kills vibrating ads for users.

Google appears to be getting serious about tackling ads that have a negative impact on the user experience. A recent report pointed out that it’s even testing a native ad blocker for Google Chrome.

Vibrating ads make up of the Web Vibration API that enables web pages to make the handset vibrate. It was designed to be used with interactive content and games but some ad networks purposefully serve such ads so get the user to accidentally click somewhere so that they end up downloading malware on their device.

Chrome 60 takes care of this problem. Web pages will not be allowed to vibrate the phone until and unless the user taps on the page first. This means that users will no longer be taken by surprise by ads that pop up out of nowhere and make their phone vibrate uncontrollably.

Google is in the process of rolling out the latest build of Chrome for Android so it may take a while before it becomes available for everyone.
