Leaked Chromebook Keyboard Layout Confirms Dedicated Assistant Button

Multiple reports have suggested that Google will soon bring its AI-powered Assistant to Chromebooks. The company has also started the process of sunsetting its “Ok, Google” feature in favor or Assistant. Reports have also suggested that new Chromebooks will have a dedicated Assistant key. The newly leaked Chromebook keyboard layout confirms this possibility.

The leaked Chromebook keyboard layout has been obtained from a bug report which contained this screenshot. The image shows the keyboard overlay with a dedicated Assistant key positioned between the ctrl and alt keys on the left of the space bar.

The leaked image also backs up an earlier report which suggested that the forward key would be removed from the keyboard which will also see the addition of a play/pause key and a new key right of the vol.up key which is labeled as “system menu.”

As the name suggests, the Assistant key will be used for bringing up Google Assistant at the touch of a button. The system menu key may be used to enable the system tray of the Chromebook and perhaps even bring up menus when inside of apps that have support for the new key.

It’s unclear right now when new Chromebooks with the updated keyboard layout are going to hit the market.

New OnePlus 5 Variant Teased

It has only been a month or so since OnePlus started selling its new flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 5. The much-awaited flagship killer has been well received. OnePlus is no stranger to launching new variants of its flagship devices in order to keep the hype going. If a recent post on the company’s official Facebook page is to be believed, it may be about to launch a new OnePlus variant in the near future.

The OnePlus 5 has been well received in the market despite some of the hiccups it has had. The new flagship took flak for the jelly scrolling effect and a bug that prevented users from dialing emergency services. OnePlus has addressed those issues, though, so all is good now.

A few hours ago, the company posted on its official Facebook page an image that contains the outline of the OnePlus 5 handset with the caption “5omething New. Coming Soon.” The outline is accompanied by the two variants of the OnePlus 5 that are already available.

It’s unlikely that OnePlus is launching a “T” variant of the OnePlus 5 so soon. The OnePlus 5 already has the most recent hardware package and an update for the internals so soon doesn’t really make sense.

It’s most likely going to be a variant that adds a new color option to the lineup but this is just speculation right now. OnePlus should have the official details for us about this in a couple of days.

Samsung Launches Massive 88 Inch QLED TV

You might need to clear up a lot of space in your room if you decide to buy this TV because it is massive in the true sense of the world. Samsung today announced the release of its 88 inch QLED TV in North America. The Samsung Q9 QLED TV has an 88 inch panel. Samsung says that this ultra-large TV further solidifies its top position in the global ultra-premium TV market.

Samsung has designed the Q9 with the consumer’ living spaces in mind so not only does it promise superb picture quality and performance but it packages all of that in a sleek design. This particular model received record high scores by Video Magazin, one of Germany’s most well-regarded consumer electronics magazines.

Since it’s the only TV to achieve 100 percent color volume, according to Samsung, the QLED TV reproduces rich and colorful images using its metal quantum dot technology. It also provides remarkable brightness and a wide color gamut.

Consumers continue to demand larger screens and premium TVs so Samsung is rising to the challenge. The company already sells large TVs in its QLED lineup which includes models in 55 inch, 65 inch, and 75 inch sizes.

Samsung’s 88 inch Q9 QLED TV will soon be available for purchase in North America. The price has not yet been confirmed. Samsung is also going to release this model in Europe over the next few months.

IBM Scientists Capture Record 330 TB Of Data In Small Cartridge

Scientists at IBM have done something truly remarkable. They have been able to store 330 terabytes of uncompressed data on a tiny cartridge that’s small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. To get a sense of just how much data they have managed to store in this little cartridge, consider the fact that 330 TB is the equivalent of 330 million books.

This works out to an impressive 201 gigabits per square inch. The number made possible by this prototype sputtered magnetic type are over 20 times greater than the existing areal density employed by commercial tape drives.

Tape drives, which were invented some six decades ago, are generally used for video archives, backup files, and cold storage purposes. Sputtered tape does cost more to manufacture than current commercial tape but as demonstrated, its potential for very high capacity makes the cost per terabyte very attractive.

This makes the technology very practical for cold storage in the cloud, explained IBM fellow Evangelos Eleftheriou. This wasn’t an easy feat. In order to achieve the 201 GB per square inch, the researchers at IBM developed several new technologies.

This latest milestone, according to IBM, shows that it’s viable to continue scaling up storage on tape drives for at least another decade.
