iPhone 8’s Status Bar Could Be More ‘Powerful’

Many are probably wondering what Apple will change in the design of the iPhone 8, and it seems that Apple recently confirmed the designed themselves thanks to a drawing discovered in the firmware for the HomePod speakers. The drawing confirms what we had previously seen, which is a full screen iPhone with a “notch” at the top part of the phone.

The notch is where the earpiece, front-facing camera, and other sensors will be house in, and while we suppose it makes sense for it to be placed there, the notch does create a weird design and might even interfere with how apps are run on the phone, but apparently Apple has already thought about this and might actually have a solution for it, according to developer Steve Troughton-Smith.

According to Troughton-Smith, it seems that Apple has redesigned the status bar of the iPhone 8 and will apparently be more “powerful” in terms of design, whatever that means. It has also been suggested that the status bar has been purposely split, which could offer up a different approach for the status bar which apart from new icons, has remained largely unchanged over the years.

In any case we guess we’ll probably have to wait until some time in September before we can get the official details, but in the meantime what kind of changes or improvements do you think Apple could make to its status bar?

Microsoft To Build-In Eye-Tracking Features Into Windows 10

For those of us who are able bodied, the ability to use our hands to control our computers through a keyboard and mouse is something we tend to take for granted, or at least until the unspeakable happens and we suddenly lose some (or all) functionality in our limbs. In some cases, some are even born with such disabilities, which makes using computers difficult.

There are various accessibility features that have been built into operating systems, and Microsoft wants to add more such features to that list by building eye-tracking features into Windows 10. The feature, nicknamed Eye Control, will basically allow users to navigate through Windows 10 using nothing but their gaze, where users can launch apps, type, and perform various tasks just by focusing their eyes on whatever it is on the screen.

This will also see Microsoft work with Tobii, who for those unfamiliar is a company well-versed in creating eye-tracking hardware, and has in the past created their own devices or even teamed up with other companies to create eye-tracking hardware used for various purposes, such as gaming.

According to Jake Cohen, Program Manager on the Windows Interaction Platform team, “When I heard about the Ability Eye Gaze team and what they were creating, it was super exciting to think about the possibilities of what could be done next, and it really made a dramatic difference to me when we started meeting with people living with ALS. I began to understand all the challenges they live with every single day. We’ve done a lot of great work across our teams, and we have a lot more to do, but we’re at a point where it has the potential to really start changing lives.”

Verizon Up replaces Smart Rewards and makes things simpler

Verizon ended its Smart Rewards points program today and immediately replaced it with an alternative system called Verizon Up. Nothing remains the same, with the exception of earning rewards. Whereas before you earned points based on a roster of things like paying your bill, Verizon Up dishes out one reward for one point, and one point for every $300 you … Continue reading

Apple’s Tim Cook teases autonomous tech for non-car gadgets

Apple is, by all accounts, developing autonomous technology for cars, but what about other gadgets? Many items could potentially benefit from such technology, not the least of which are home appliances that need to navigate around the house without aid: a smart vacuum, perhaps, or maybe even a personal robot if we’re to look far enough into the future. Could … Continue reading

Tesla battery head departs as Model 3 production ramps up

Tesla may be celebrating the launch of the Model 3, but it’s still a bittersweet week. The electric car maker’s longstanding battery technology director, Kurt Kelty (pictured at right), has left the company after 11 years. Neither Tesla nor Kelty h…

Apple Has Protected Enough Forests To Cover Its Packaging Needs

We know that Apple has always been very environmentally-conscious, what with the company opting to use recycled materials for its packaging or even making its operations green by relying on alternative sources of energy, such as solar. Now it seems that it has gotten to the point where Apple is protecting enough forests to cover its packaging needs.

According to a report from Chinese news outlet Xinhua Net, it turns out that Apple’s conservation efforts have been coming along rather nicely, to the point where they have protected enough sustainable forest land where it can actually cover the company’s entire packaging needs. Basically however much Apple needs for packaging, they are protecting as well, which we guess kind of offsets what they are consuming, so while it isn’t exactly in the surplus, at the very least Apple isn’t in the deficit.

Apple’s plans to protect forests was launched back in 2015 where they bought up 36,000 acres of private forest land in Maine and North Carolina. These forests were to be used by Apple for harvesting for its packaging needs, but it would also be a sustainable solution where Apple could also sell the fiber to other companies.

Speaking to Greenbiz, Lisa Jackson, VP of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives said, “We found that the Chinese were willing to be wonderful partners, both on the private- and public-sector side because they have a real appreciation for the forest resource. We’re finding that China is very fertile soil to grow green programs.”

Facebook Reportedly Working On A Device For Video Chat

When it comes to hardware, unlike Amazon, Facebook hasn’t really had much luck on that front. The company has tried to launch some handsets but that did not exactly pan out, but now a report from Bloomberg is suggesting that Facebook has more devices up their sleeves, this time in the form of a device that can facilitate video chat.

The report claims that this device will feature a touchscreen display as big as a laptop, and it will also be equipped with smart camera technology that will help people feel like they are in the same room when chatting with the other person. It is reportedly already in the prototype phase and is being tested in the homes of some people (presumably Facebook employees).

If you’re wondering why this sounds familiar, it is because just the other day a report from DigiTimes revealed that Facebook could be working on a smart speaker of their own. The device is rumored to feature a 15-inch display (laptop size) which could also facilitate video calls. While we can’t say for sure if these are the same devices, they do sound awfully similar to each other.

As to when we might see this product being announced, it will probably depend on whether or not its prototyping and testing goes well. However assuming it does, it is speculated that it could be announced as soon as next spring’s F8 developer conference, which means that it will be in 2018 that we’ll be seeing it at the earliest (if at all).

Apple’s iPad Sales Are Up 15% Year-Over-Year

There was one point in time where it was speculated that the tablet could eventually replace more traditional computing devices like laptops, but in more recent times it seems that maybe interest in tablets are starting to wane. However despite what appears to be a decline in tablet sales, Apple’s iPads appear to still be doing well for the company.

According to Apple’s latest earning results, the Cupertino company has revealed that iPad sales are up 15% year-over-year in Q3 2017. The company has revealed that they have managed to sell a whopping 11.4 million iPads during the third quarter of 2017, in which it managed to rake in nearly $5 billion in revenue alone.

This also represents an increase from the same period last year where Apple managed to sell under 10 million iPads, although admittedly that is still a lot of tablets. Apple also managed to beat the expectations of analysts, some of whom predicted that Apple would only sell as many as 7-9.8 million units during the quarter, but clearly the company has beat those expectations and then some.

We’re not sure how there is an increase in tablet sales, but it is possible that Apple’s introduction of newer iPad Pro models as well as a more affordable iPad could have a part to play in this.

Nintendo: SNES Classic Edition Pre-Orders Will Begin This Month

When Nintendo released the NES Classic Edition, it might have seemed like a rather novel thing for the company to do, and given the limited nature of the games and the fact that you couldn’t add more, it didn’t seem like it would be a particularly popular product, but boy were we wrong. It was so popular to the point that even Nintendo couldn’t produce enough units to meet demand.

In fact even when Nintendo officially discontinued the console, it will still impossible to get your hands on one unless you were willing to pay exorbitant prices for them. That being said, this is why when the SNES Classic Edition was announced, many were eager to place their pre-orders quickly, and Nintendo has just confirmed that pre-orders for the console will be kicking off this month.

Nintendo’s post on Facebook reads, “We appreciate the incredible anticipation that exists for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition system, and can confirm that it will be made available for pre-order by various retailers late this month. A significant amount of additional systems will be shipped to stores for launch day, and throughout the balance of the calendar year.”

This is excellent news for those in North America, especially for those who tried to pre-order the console via Walmart only to have their orders cancelled. Apparently it was due to a technical glitch that caused the console to have opened its pre-orders earlier than the actual date.

More Alleged Nikon D850 Features/Specifications Leaked

The Nikon D850 is a camera that Nikon has recently confirmed that they are working on. However despite the company making it announcement of the camera official, they have not really revealed much about it, save for the fact that it will be a full-frame camera that is also meant to be the successor to the D810.

That being said, the folks at Nikon Rumors have recently published a bunch of specs and features of the upcoming camera that will hopefully be proven true. Starting with what we’ve heard so far, the D850 is said to feature a 46MP full frame CMOS sensor and shares the same AF system as the Nikon D850.

It is also said to feature an improved version of SnapBridge, a tiltable LCD touchscreen display, and supports two sticks of memory cards. Other rumored features also suggests back illuminated buttons, a joystick selector, built-in Bluetooth and WiFi, 8K time-lapse video capabilities, 4K UHD video in FX format, slow-mo Full HD 120fps video, an improved LCD with twice the resolution of the D810, improved battery life, a lighter body, and shooting speeds of 8fps.

Sounds good, doesn’t it? Unfortunately it won’t come cheap either as Nikon Rumors has heard that the camera should be priced just under $4,000, or around $3,600 to be more specific. Clearly this isn’t aimed at amateurs but for the professional or serious hobbyist, it could be a worthy investment.
