Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL owners on Verizon should keep their eyes peeled for an update notification today. The country’s largest mobile carrier has started rolling out the latest and greatest iteration of Android to the handsets. Android 8.0 Oreo is now being rolled out by Verizon for the Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL.
Google has always sold its Pixel smartphones directly to customers. Many chose to buy it straight from the company itself because they knew Google would release new updates to them first. Moreover, Verizon isn’t really known for being quick with software updates.
Verizon seems to be approving updates for Pixel handsets at a faster pace because Android updates for the Pixel and Pixel XL on its network arrives merely days after Google releases them.
That’s also the case with Android 8.0 Oreo. Google started rolling it out to Pixel and Pixel XL handsets just a few days back. Verizon has now updated its support pages for both handsets to confirm that it’s rolling out the firmware update.
The update that it’s rolling out also includes the latest August security patch. Pixel and Pixel XL owners on Verizon can expect to receive an over-the-air update notification on their handsets in the very near future if they haven’t already.

BlackBerry is no longer manufacturing smartphones on its own. It has licensed its brand to China-based TCL which is now making BB-branded smartphones. The first result of this collaboration was the BlackBerry KEYOne and now the two companies are gearing up to launch another handset. It has been confirmed that there’s going to be a new all touchscreen BlackBerry handset which will be unveiled this October.
This was confirmed today by François Mahieu, head of global sales for TCL, during the company’s IFA 2017 briefing in Berlin. “Two months from now, we will have a touchscreen solution to show,” he said.
TCL had previously said that it would release as many as three BB-branded devices this year but it has launched only one so far. This is the first we’ve heard from the company about a new BB-branded smartphone and now we know that it’s going to be out this October.
It’s not going to be all that different from the BlackBerry KEYOne apparently. TCL says that the new handset will be roughly the same price as the KEYOne and its major differentiating factor will be that it’s going to be all touchscreen without a QWERTY keyboard.
This doesn’t mean that TCL is not going to launch any keyboard touting BB handsets in the future. There will be more of them down the line. “We’re here to stay and we’re going to roll out more BlackBerry products in the coming years, starting this year,” Mahieu said.

Amazon hasn’t really changed the hardware of its original Echo speaker which it launched back in 2015. It has launched new Echo products but the original smart speaker has remained the same more or less. Perhaps it’s about time that the company launched an updated version of this product. That seems likely now that the original Echo is out of stock online.
You can’t just head over to Amazon right now and pick up one of the original Echo speakers. The Echo is a big part of Amazon’s hardware business so it’s rare for this product to go out of stock.
The company has been constantly offering the original Echo at a discount over the past few months. This can be taken as an indication of an impending update.
Launching a new Echo device would make sense for the company right now. It’s going to have a new smart speaker on the market just in time for the holiday season. It’s also going to have a new competitor to Apple’s HomePod which is also going to be released around the holiday season this year.
Amazon has said nothing about its plans for new Echo hardware at this point in time so nothing is set in stone just yet. It may just be that the company has ended up selling more Echo units than it expected to.

Instagram provided its users with the ability to upload albums earlier this year. It finally brought this feature to all users after limiting it to advertisers for over two years. Instagram today announced that it’s improving the album feature by enabling users to upload photos in the format of their choosing.
While it has been possible to publish multiple photos as part of a single post, users were only allowed to post square-format photos as was the case with the Instagram of years past.
That changes starting today. Instagram is now allowing users to post portrait and landscape photos in the album. It will no longer crop those photos down to a square when the album is published in a single post.
There seems to be one caveat, though. Users have to decide which format they’re going to use for the album and then stick with it. One album can’t have portrait and landscape photos. It can only have one format in it, either portrait or landscape.
It’s a minor detail but nevertheless, it’s an important one. Instagram is still capping the maximum number of photos in an album to 10. The change has been rolled out today so you can fire up the Instagram app on your handset right now and check it out.
