NVIDIA Announces New Titan And Quadro External GPU Solutions

There are many valid arguments that one could make about how desktops might be better than laptops when it comes to productivity. For example a better cooling system, larger display, the ability to upgrade components easily, and so on. However there are times when laptops are a necessity, especially if you travel a lot.

However when it comes to laptops, you have to consider whether you want power or mobility, in which power usually means opting for gaming laptops that usually come with considerably beefier specs thanks to larger displays and also dedicated GPUs, but NVIDIA is hoping to change the conversation as they have unveiled new Titan xP and Quadro external GPU solutions.

External GPUs aren’t new, but like we said these are new external GPU solutions announced by NVIDIA who will be working with various hardware partners, such as Bizon, Magma, and Sonnet who will be launching compatible solutions in September.

According to Bob Pette, NVIDA VP for Professional Visualization, “While more computer power than ever is needed for VR, photoreal rendering and AI workflows, mobile systems are getting thinner and lighter, with limited performance and memory. Our eGPUs can now solve this problem, enabling creatives to plug into our most capable GPUs so they could do their best work on the most graphically demanding applications.” There is no word on pricing just yet.

Spotify Is Now Boasting 60 Million Paid Subscribers

While Apple might have the resources, reputation, connections, and distribution to help them get a leg up on the competition with Apple Music, it seems that they are still not yet the number one music streaming service provider. In fact that honor goes to Spotify who according to a report from Reuters, is now boasting 60 million paid subscribers.

This is an addition of 10 million paid subscribers in less than five months, a very impressive feat, especially when you consider that unlike Apple Music or Play Music, Spotify is typically not bundled together with smartphones, meaning that users will need to download and subscribe to the service themselves.

Taking into consideration that Spotify charges $10 a month for users using its services, that’s a lot of money the company is raking in. That being said while Spotify is clearly in the lead, we shouldn’t be so quick to discount Apple just yet. Last we heard, Apple was boasting 20 million paid subscribers which is impressive as the service has been around less time than Spotify.

It was also found that Apple had more active users per month than the competition, although based on the figures it seems that not all of these active users translated into subscribers.

Apple Issues Statement On Removal Of VPN Apps In China

China’s censorship of the internet on their end of things is pretty well-known, which is why it doesn’t really surprise us that the local government isn’t a fan of technology that allows its residents to skirt around the censorship measures that they have put into place, technology like VPNs.

Recently it was reported that Apple had removed unlicensed VPNs from its App Store in China without saying why. It was speculated at that time it had to do with them complying with local laws, and a recent statement issued by the company pretty much confirms it. According to Apple, “Earlier this year China’s MIIT announced that all developers offering VPNs must obtain a license from the government.  We have been required to remove some VPN apps in China that do not meet the new regulations. These apps remain available in all other markets where they do business.”

While VPNs are allowed in China, they need to be licensed by the government, which depending on the reason why you need to use a VPN, kind of defeats the purpose, especially if users want to use it to circumvent the government’s censorship and blocking of certain websites and services.

The removal of the apps in the iTunes App Store now means that the average user will have a harder time trying to find a VPN to use. It’s not entirely impossible to find another solution, but we guess it will just be less accessible now.
