Google Brings Augmented Reality To Existing Android Phones With ARCore

Google today announced the launch of a new software development kit called ARCore. This SDK is going to enable the company to add augmented reality capabilities to existing and future Android smartphones. Interested developers can start experimenting with this software development kit right now.

Google’s mobile AR efforts have been focused on its Project Tango AR initiative over the past few years. ARCore is built on the work that it has done with Tango. ARCore doesn’t require any additional hardware so it can easily scale across the existing Android ecosystem.

ARCore will eventually run on millions of Android devices but starting today, it’s compatible with the Pixel and Samsung’s Galaxy S8 running Android 7.0 Nougat and above. Google is aiming to have ARCore up and running on more than 100 million devices at the end of the preview.

The company is going to work with its Android OEM partners like Huawei, LG, Samsung, ASUS, and others to make this possible while ensuring that quality and performance remain consistent.

ARCore focuses on motion tracking via the phone’s camera. It can determine the position and orientation of the phone as it moves.

It can also detect horizontal surfaces using the same feature points to accurately place AR objects on the floor or on a table. The SDK observes ambient light in the environment and enables developers to light virtual objects in ways that match their surroundings.

ARCore is what’s going to help Google popularize augmented reality by leveraging its massive Android ecosystem. The company will have more to share about ARCore later this year.

Tinder Gold Lets You See Who Swiped Right On You

Tinder, the world’s leading hookup app, has been testing a new paid tier called Tinder Gold in markets like the United Kingdom, Mexico, Germany, and Canada. For a monthly fee, users can see which of their fellow Tinder users swiped right on their profile thus indicating their interest in them. The paid tier also brings a couple of other features that normal users don’t get. Tinder Gold is now available in the United States.

Tinder has confirmed today that Tinder Gold is now being rolled out to users on iOS devices. It charges $4.99 per month for the privilege. Since it lets people see who swiped right on their profile, it helps increase their chances of matching with someone.

Tinder Gold also includes other paid features that are part of the Tinder Plus subscription plan, these include features like Rewind, Passport, Unlimited Like, five Super Likes per day, one Boost per month, additional profile controls, and more.

The “Likes You” feature has been described by Tinder as “your personal Swipe Right concierge” as it brings all of a user’s pending matches to them automatically. They can then swipe right on those profiles and get a match.

Tinder has said that it’s going to start testing this feature in markets like Argentina and Australia in the coming days as well.

Select WhatsApp Business Accounts Get Verified Badges

Facebook-owned WhatsApp wants to be the communication solution that businesses use to get in touch with their customers. It’s also making it easier for customers to find the real accounts of businesses that they want to connect to. There were reports recently that something like this was about to happen and WhatsApp has gone ahead with the idea. It has added verified badges to select business accounts.

WhatsApp is adding verified badges to business accounts after ensuring that their contact information is accurate. The verification process only appears to have been opened up to a small number of businesses that have participated in its pilot program.

The verified badge, denoted by a green check, will be attached with a business account if the phone number of a contact belongs to a business account. WhatsApp is also making it easier for users to know that they’re talking to a business account. It will show a yellow text bubble in the chat to make that apparent.

These texts can’t be deleted, though, despite the fact that WhatsApp allows users to delete messages from regular conversations. WhatsApp appears to be forcing users to keep their records of chats with a verified business account.

The verified badges will help businesses appear more trustworthy on the world’s most popular cross-platform messaging app. It may also encourage more businesses to jump on the platform to leverage its massive user base.
