Latest Dell XPS 13 Models Get 8th Gen Intel Core Processors

Dell today updated its XPS 13 lineup of notebooks with the latest 8th Generation Core processors from Intel. The Dell XPS 13 can now be configured with Intel’s latest quadcore Core i5 and Core i7 chips. Dell isn’t going to have all configurations in stock from the very first day, though.

Dell XPS 13 models powered by the 1.8GHz Core i7 with speeds of up to 4GHz chip will be available starting September 12th. The company is going to start selling models of this notebook with the 1.6GHz Core i5 with speeds of up to 3.4GHz in October.

The company is yet to confirm what it’s going to charge for these new XPS13 notebooks that come with the latest processors from Intel. The existing XPS 13 models with Core i7 chips start at $1,349 so that’s a good reference point if you’re interested in purchasing the upcoming models.

Not much has changed as far as the design is concerned, then again, there was no need to. The XPS 13’s design was very well received last year so it appears that Dell has not tried to fix something that isn’t broken.

Intel’s new 8th Generation Core processors will also be available on notebooks in Dell’s Inspiron line. These new chips will be offered to customers who pick up 13 and 15 inch models of the Inspiron 5000 and 7000 2-in-1 as well as the standard Inspiron 7000. Dell Inspiron 7000 17 inch 2-in-1 gets the 8th Generation chips too.

LG V30’s Audio Features Will Be Unlike Anything Else On The Market

LG is due to unveil its second flagship for the year in the near future. The LG V30 is going to be unveiled at IFA 2017 in Berlin later this week. The company has been hyping up this new device and it has now released a teaser which hypes up the audio features of the new flagship. LG claims in the teaser that the V30 is going to have audio features that are “unseen in a smartphone.”

Last year’s V20 had advanced audio features as well. That handset features a 32 bit Quad DAC. The upcoming flagship is going to feature a 32 bit Advanced Hi-Fi Quad DAC, according to LG, it’s going to be powered by ESS Technology’s Sabre ES9218P chip.

This new DAC is going to offer more customization options and will enable LG to offer users more digital filters and pre-programmed sound presets. The LG V30 will have four sound presets – enhanced, live, detailed, and bass. The digital filters will help users modify the impulse response.

The company has said that users with “ordinary equipment” will be able to get close to the high-quality audio listening experience with the LG V30 compared to those who use more expensive headsets.

Other than its advanced audio functionality, the LG V30 is going to feature flagship-level specifications and an OLED display. It’s going to be officially unveiled by LG at its IFA 2017 press event next week.

Galaxy Note 8 Apps Available For Rooted Samsung Phones

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note 8 last week. The company’s new flagship phablet has been well received, at least initially, and those who want one can now place their pre-orders for the handset. If they already own a Samsung phone that’s rooted, they can get Galaxy Note 8 apps while they wait for their new flagship to arrive in the mail.

The folks over at the XDA Developers forums have ported a total of 17 Galaxy Note 8 apps from the new handset. These apps can now be installed on any other Samsung smartphone that’s rooted and is running Android 7.0 Nougat.

Users will require a custom recovery to flash the .zip file these apps are contained in. This happens to trip the Samsung Knox security software and ends up voiding the device’s warranty. So be absolutely sure about what you’re doing before you install these apps.

The Galaxy Note 8 apps in this package include the handset’s native Calendar, Phone, Contacts, Browser, People Edge, S Finder, Smart Manager apps, among others. The company’s new camera app and the Always On Display are missing from this package but they might be added a bit later down the road.

The package with all of these Galaxy Note 8 apps is now available for download on the XDA forum.

Microsoft Will ‘Democratize’ Virtual Reality This Holiday Season

Microsoft today said that it’s has been working with its partners, including Steam, to “democratize” virtual reality this holiday season. Last year, the company took a big step towards this when it announced that some of the world’s largest PC manufacturers were working with it on Windows Mixed Reality headsets. More details on the Windows Mixed Reality headsets will be shared by Microsoft at IFA 2017 later this week.

One of the company’s goals is to eliminate the need for cumbersome setups that existing high-end VR headsets with external cameras require. The upcoming Windows Mixed Reality headsets will be the first to power VR experience with built-in sensors to track the user’s physical position without needing them to purchase and install external sensors in their room.

Many of Microsoft’s hardware partners including Acer, Lenovo, and HP are going to release a variety of Windows Mixed Reality headsets this holiday season with headset and motion controller bundles starting as low as $399. They will be compatible with new PC models that will start at $499.

The Windows Mixed Reality PCs will consist of desktops and laptops with integrated graphics. The headsets will run at 60 frames per second when plugged into these PCs. The Windows Mixed Reality Ultra PCs will also consist of desktops and laptops but with discrete graphics. Headsets will run at 90 fps when plugged into these machines.

Microsoft has also confirmed today that Steam content is going to run on Windows Mixed Reality headsets as well. 343 Industries is working to bring future Halo experiences to mixed reality.

The company will talk more about its mixed reality initiatives at IFA 2017 in Berlin this week.

The Bixby button is the bane of my mobile existence

Samsung made a controversial decision with its flagship Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones: to include a physical button for summoning Bixby, the personal assistant that wasn’t finished upon the handsets’ launch. Some people were okay with the button’s existence when the option (briefly and unofficially) existed to remap it. Samsung squashed that ability, though, and now we’re left with … Continue reading
