Essential Phone Is Finally Shipping

Essential, the nascent smartphone company founded by the co-founder of Android Andy Rubin, unveiled its first smartphone earlier this year. The Essential Phone was supposed to be released over a month ago but the company missed its own release deadline. After confirming when the handset would be out, Essential has now finally started shipping the Essential Phone.

The release delay wasn’t caused by any production issues, apparently. Essential later confirmed that it had missed its own release deadline due to certification issues.

Essential’s first flagship smartphone has the kind of specs that you would expect from any Android-powered flagship this year. It’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor coupled with 4GB of RAM, 128GB of onboard storage, and a 3040mAh battery.

The handset also features a dual camera system at the back, a USB Type-C connector, and a near stock version of Android. The body of the device itself is fashioned out of titanium while the back is ceramic.

The company finally started taking pre-orders for its first flagship smartphone earlier this month and it has now started shipping those units.

Essential has confirmed via Twitter that it has begun shipping the Essential Phone and that customers will soon receive an email with the tracking information.

BlackBerry Android ROM May Soon Be Licensed To Other OEMs

Your next Android smartphone might be powered by an Android ROM developed by BlackBerry. According to a new report, the company is thinking about licensing its secure version of Android to other smartphone manufacturers. What this means is that the manufacturer will make the hardware and it will be powered by BlackBerry’s custom version of Android which the company claims is more secure than any other iteration of the mobile platform.

BlackBerry completed its shift to Android a couple of years ago. It no longer makes devices powered by its own operating system.

The company has added an additional layer of security to the Android platform, though. All of its Android smartphones also come with its DTEK security suite for enhanced control. BlackBerry also pushes out the monthly security patches from Google rapidly.

According to a report published by The Economic Times, the BlackBerry Android ROM is going to be called BlackBerry Secure. The ROM is reportedly going to have all of the security features that can be found on BlackBerry’s Android devices right now.

It’s unclear at this point in time which companies that make Android smartphones will opt for a ROM from BlackBerry, considering the fact that most have their own custom ROMs for their devices.

Moto X4 Surfaces At The FCC

Countless rumors have pointed towards a new handset that Motorola has in the pipeline. It’s believed that the company is working on the Moto X4 which it might unveil in the near future. The Moto X4 has now surfaced at the Federal Communications Commission. Its listing at the FCC can be taken as an indication of its impending launch. Motorola is yet to say anything about the device, though.

Reports suggest that the Moto X4 is going to feature a 5.2 inch full HD resolution display with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor. It may also feature 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, Adreno 508 graphics processor, and a 3,000mAh battery.

The Moto X4 is said to feature a 12 megapixel dual camera system at the back alongside a 16 megapixel front facing wide angle camera. Connectivity options include 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS-GLONASS, and Wi-Fi.

No word as yet on the pricing and availability details for this handset. Lenovo-owned Motorola hasn’t even confirmed at this point in time when it intends to launch this handset. Given the rising frequency of leaks, we should hear official word about it from the company in the near future.

The Moto X4 is likely going to be powered by Android 7.0 Nougat when it comes out but will certainly receive an update to Android 8.0 Oreo when the time comes.

Microsoft No Longer Selling Original Xbox One

If you’ve always wanted to purchase the original Xbox One that Microsoft launched back in 2013, you’re out of luck. The company is no longer selling the original console in the United States. It’s only selling the retail versions of the Xbox One X and Xbox One S via its online store.

Customers who really want one can pick up a refurbished model of the original Xbox One for $199. The original Xbox One has actually disappeared from the company’s online store in the United States without a trace.

The company didn’t really make a big fuss about the fact that it’s no longer selling the original console. On the other hand, the console remains listed on Microsoft’s UK online store, but mentions that the SKU is “sold out.”

It’s highly unlikely that units will be restocked. Customers who really want to purchase an original Xbox One can try checking with the company’s retail partners to see if they have any stock remaining because Microsoft seems to be done with it for good.

Microsoft is now focusing its energies on the Xbox One X, the most powerful console it has ever built. The company opened pre-orders for the console last week and later said that it was the “fastest-selling Xbox pre-order ever.” The company didn’t provide any concrete numbers to back that statement up with, though.

BittBoy is a retro pocket console that does a lot for very little

The GameBoy Pocket remains one of the best-designed pieces of mobile gaming kit ever in my opinion, which is why I was intrigued by the BittBoy, a new third-party portable console that clearly owes a lot of inspiration to the GameBoy.
