This Maze-Like Chip Can Spot Aggressive Cancer Cells

There are several ways that doctors can spot cancer cells, but given that there are billions, if not trillions of cells, this could take a while, and could slow down the treatment process, or in some instances doctors might miss it entirely. However thanks to efforts by researchers at the University of Michigan (via Engadget), that could change thanks to this chip.

As you can see in the photo above, researchers have developed a chip with a maze-like pattern. This is a microfluidic chip that can apparently help to separate cancer cells from the rest of your bloodstream. This is thanks to the use of physics  where the curves will help to push the larger cancer cells forwards, while the smaller, regular cells will cling to the walls.

According to the researchers, “The labyrinth riffs on the spiral, sorting the blood’s contents according to the sizes of the cells, with smaller white and red blood cells accumulating in different parts of the fluid channel. A number of forces are at play: on the inside of a curve, eddies push particles away from the wall. The larger cancer cells are pushed a bit harder than the smaller white blood cells. At the outside of the curve, smaller particles feel more drawn to the wall.”

This method is also said to be faster than conventional methods and can take minutes to pinpoint the cancerous cells. This method can even be refined further simply by adding another chip. At the moment this chip is being used in clinical trials to help isolate cancer cells from patients with an aggressive form of breast cancer.

No Official Plans For Final Fantasy XV For The Switch Yet

Recently it was reported that Square Enix was apparently exploring ways to bring Final Fantasy XV onto the Nintendo Switch, or at least that was according to the game’s director Hajime Tabata. However it turns out that maybe gamers shouldn’t hold their breath for the game just yet.

According to a recent interview with Famitsu (via Nintendo Everything), Square Enix has stated that there are no official plans to bring Final Fantasy XV onto the Switch just yet. While they didn’t contradict the earlier comments, the company has instead clarified that they were simply conducting technical examinations of what they could bring onto the platform, and that Final Fantasy XV was one of the tests that they conducted.

The good news is that while nothing can be confirmed yet, Square Enix doesn’t seem to be closed to the idea of bringing the game onto the Switch. The company had previously promised that they will be fully supporting the Switch, but for now development on Final Fantasy XV is being focused on the PC version of the game as well as the new DLC, but who knows what the future holds?

We’ve already seen companies like Bethesda bring over some of its major titles like the 2016 DOOM reboot, the newly announced Wolfenstein II, as well as fan-favorite Skyrim.

Apple’s New Apple TV Won’t Play YouTube In 4K

A couple of weeks ago, Apple announced their latest Apple TV which has the ability to playback videos in 4K, something that Apple TV users have been asking Apple for for the longest time, and the company finally delivered where users can expect to enjoy 4K videos from the likes of iTunes and Netflix.

However it seems that if you do enjoy watching 4K videos on YouTube, here’s something to take into consideration. According to early reviews of the new Apple TV, it has been discovered that the device will not support 4K YouTube videos. While Apple has yet to officially comment on this, it has been speculated that this is due to Google using the VP9 codec, while the Apple TV supports H.264/HEVC.

As AppleInsider points out, the new chipset on the Apple TV does not support hardware encoding/decoding, but Apple could have gone the software route but for some reason did not choose to. The H.264/HEVC video format is more widely supported, but given how big of a platform YouTube is, it is surprising that Apple did not make an exception.

Maybe in the future Apple and Google will come to some kind of agreement for Apple to support the VP9 codec, but for now it looks like you’ll just have to enjoy your YouTube videos in Full HD.

iPhone 7 VS iPhone 8 Speaker Volume Test

Whenever new phones are announced, a lot of the attention is focused on things like the handset’s design, display vividness, resolution, size, camera megapixels, processor speed, and so on. However not much attention is paid to the speakers, although with the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, Apple did emphasize on how its new speakers would be louder than before.

However the question is, is it really louder? That’s what the folks at iClarified did when they conducted a speaker volume test of the iPhone 7 versus that of the iPhone 8. Apple stated that loudness is expected to have been increased by as much as 25%, and the video above attempts to find out if that is indeed the case.

To test out the speakers, iClarified placed a sound level meter at the bottom of the device for one test, and then in the middle of the device for the second test. Based on the readings, it seems that the iPhone 8 is louder than the iPhone 7, although not by much which could easily be a margin of error.

However it should be noted that with the iPhone 8, Apple has given it stereo speakers by placing one speaker at the bottom and one at the top, so maybe when combined it will produce a louder sound. In any case if speaker volume is important to you, then this is something to take note of if you’re considering the iPhone 8.
