These Wall-Mounted Arcade Cabinets Save Quarters and Space

I’ve got a pretty slick custom arcade cabinet in my man cave, but it really takes up quite a bit of space. Original arcade cabinets needed all of that room for a big CRT monitor, multiple circuit boards, and ventilation. But today’s flat-screen monitors and efficient computers require no such space considerations. So the idea of an arcade cabinet that hangs on the wall seems like a natural.

The guys over at Chicago’s Basement Arcades are making these flat cabinets which can easily be hung up on the wall, or placed on a tabletop. Each cabinet has a built-in 22″ LCD monitor, a backlit marquee, and the proper arcade joysticks and buttons for 2-player games. Best of all, the entire cabinet only sticks off the wall 16 inches, making it perfect for small spaces.

A complete system sells for just $1199 (USD), and can be decked out in one of several graphic themes, or customized to your liking. Each one comes with a link where you can install over 3300 classic arcade games, as well as many from Atari, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and Neo Geo consoles. There’s also a DIY cabinet available for just $299, but you have to provide all of the components and artwork yourself.

Just be sure to mount this thing into your wall studs. Even though it weighs just 45 pounds, you wouldn’t want it falling off and crashing to the floor during an overzealous Street Fighter II match.

WinPhone 95: If Microsoft Made a Windows 95 Smartphone

The smartphone era hasn’t been kind to Microsoft. From their clunky early Pocket PC-based devices, to the stillborn Microsoft Kin, to their too-little-too-late Windows Phone tie-up with Nokia, the company has tried and failed many times to stake a claim in a world dominated by Android and iOS. But what would a Windows phone have been like if Microsoft made one that ran its wildly popular Windows 95 operating system?

Thanks to UI/UX designer Henrique Perticarati, we now have our answer. He recently put together a series of images which envision what the WinPhone 95 might have looked like, along with some of its specs and features.

The chunky and awkward brick of a device is the antithesis to today’s ultra-thin smartphones, and features such wonders of technology as a 1.2 megapixels Sony Mavica camera, and a teensy trackball for navigating the Windows 95 interface. And yes, it has a headphone jack (and a microphone jack too.)

Speaking of ports, there’s no USB-C or HDMI here – just good old parallel and VGA outputs for connecting all of your peripherals. Sweet! Time to dust off that old dot-matrix printer so you can print some ASCII art.

Great job, Henrique! I’m hoping you do a whole series of retro-phones. How about an Atari ST phone, or maybe a Commodore 64 phone?

Nintendo online accounts now have two-step authentication

These days, two-step authentication is a staple in good online security practices, the same as not re-using passwords on multiple accounts/websites. Thankfully Nintendo has learned from Sony’s past mistakes and now offers the feature for its online accounts with the Nintendo Network, which is used on both the Switch and 3DS game systems. It works just like you’d expect two-step … Continue reading

Twitter Lite begins testing on Android for slow data speed markets

Facebook may have paved the way with the “lite” versions of its various apps, but now other social networks, including Twitter, are getting in on the trend of offering scaled-back apps for users in countries with slow data or unreliable connections. Twitter has revealed that it’s begun testing a native Twitter Lite for Android, with an initial rollout in the … Continue reading
