Tesla Developing Own Self-Driving Chip With AMD

Tesla has made no secret of the fact that it wants to put fully autonomous cars on roads in the next few years. The company needs the best in hardware and software to make this dream a reality. According to a new report, Tesla is now developing its own chips for self-driving cars. It’s reportedly working with AMD to refine its new chip. This move is being viewed as a decision by Tesla to reduce its reliance on NVIDIA.

Tesla currently sources chips from NVIDIA that are crucial to its Autopilot semi-autonomous driving system. Tesla previously sourced chips from Mobileye, the Israel-based company that was acquired by Intel earlier this year for over $15 billion.

Citing a source familiar with the matter, CNBC reports that Tesla has received back samples of the first implementation of the dedicated self-driving chip. The desire to build its own chip is said to be aligned with Tesla’s wish to be more vertically integrated and less reliant on other companies.

Heading Tesla’s silicon project is Jim Keller, a veteran chip architect who has previously worked at both Apple and AMD. He joined Tesla early last year and is now the head of Autopilot hardware. Keller is reportedly heading a team of over 50 people. Tesla has brought in several AMD veterans after Keller was hired.

Tesla has not officially commented on this report.

Apple TV 4K Dolby Atmos Support Arrives Later

Apple’s new set-top box is capable of streaming content in 4K. At launch, the device will not be shipping with Dolby Atmos surround sound. However, the company has confirmed that support will be launched in due time. It’s going to release a firmware update down the line which will enable Dolby Atmos surround sound on the new Apple TV 4K. The new set-top box has the same A10X processor that powers the current iPad Pro models. It starts at $179.

Dolby Atmos is the next generation surround sound format, better described as “object-based surround.” It’s unlike conventional surround which routes specific tracks of audio to specific speakers. Atmos enables audio engineers to position sound objects in 3D space and the compatible devices then figure out how to best recreate it.

Support for Dolby Atmos isn’t missing from the Apple TV 4K at launch due to any hardware restriction. The company confirmed to The Verge that there’s no hardware limitation due to which Dolby Atmos support isn’t present at launch.

It added that support is on the roadmap so the firmware update that flips the switch on Dolby Atmos support should be out soon.

Apple hasn’t confirmed when it’s going to release this update so we’ll have to wait and see when that happens.

CCleaner Malware Targeted Major Tech Companies

Avast-owned CCleaner is a security app that was used by hackers to spread malware. It’s a pretty popular app with more than two billion downloads. Security researchers from Cisco Talos discovered that hackers breached security to inject malware that was likely distributed to countless CCleaner users. Avast’s investigation reveals that the malware was specifically targeting major tech companies.

The investigation has revealed that this was an Advanced Persistent Threat that was programmed to deliver malicious payload to select users. The server logs show that the payload was sent to 20 machines in a total of 8 organizations.

However, since the logs were only collected for just over three days, Avast says that the actual number of computers that received the payload are likely “at least in the order of hundreds.”

Avast hasn’t made the names of these major tech companies public for “privacy reasons,” but it does say that these companies are based in the United States, United Kingdom, Taiwan, Japan, and Germany.

Avast is working with law enforcement units to trace the source of this attack. It’s unclear at this point in time if a state-sponsored actor was behind this attack but that’s not a possibility that Avast is ruling out just yet.

Microsoft’s First London Retail Store Is Now A Possibility

Microsoft is reportedly thinking about expanding its retail presence to London. According to a new report, the company is mulling the idea of opening its first retail store in London. It’s reportedly close to securing a prime piece of real estate on London’s Oxford Circus, a popular shopping venue in the busy shopping district of the city.

The building that Microsoft is reportedly close to securing is currently occupied by United Colours of Benetton. Microsoft is said to be ready to sign a 10 year lease on the property in the coming weeks.

The report from RetailWeek does mention that nothing has been set in stone just yet and there’s a possibility that the deal might fall through.

Previous reports have suggested that Microsoft has been toying with the idea of opening a retail store in London’s prime shopping district. It was reported as far back as 2013 that it was planning to open a store after it registered its own limited company.

It was later reported that Microsoft couldn’t secure the building that it originally wanted so it decided to pass on a retail store in London. If the intention is there and a building that Microsoft likes becomes available, who’s to say it won’t go ahead and secure it.

If Microsoft does go ahead with this plan, the London store will be its first Microsoft store in the United Kingdom and Europe.
