Nintendo Switch’s hidden Golf game is a tribute to Iwata

It seems that the Nintendo Switch’s hidden and largely inaccessible NES Golf game is more than just a simple Easter egg. Reports are flowing in that the game’s presence inside the company’s latest console is, in fact, a tribute to the late Satoru Iwata and that the game can only be unlocked on the former CEO’s death anniversary and in … Continue reading

Apple TV 4K hands-on: finally, no compromises

Apple’s long-awaited fourth-generation Apple TV was almost a slam dunk. The only problem? It didn’t have 4K. That was a notable omission since both Amazon and Roku released streaming players supporting the new format in 2015. Now, Apple is finally re…

Google To HTC’s Smartphone Team For $1.1 Billion

It is no secret that HTC is definitely not the company it once was, and over the years they have been slowly ceding market share to bigger smartphone makers, and more recently OEMs from China who are quickly rising to the top of the ranks. This is why when there were rumors that Google could be considering acquiring HTC, it did not really come as a surprise.

It turns out that the rumors were true, or at least part of it because HTC and Google have recently announced a $1.1 billion cooperation agreement with each other. This will see Google more or less acquire the team behind HTC’s smartphones, or to be more specific those who have been working on the Pixel handsets, as well as a non-exclusive licensing agreement of HTC’s IP, and in exchange Google will be paying the company a whopping $1.1 billion in the process.

In a post on Google’s blog, Rick Osterloh, the SVP of Hardware wrote, “With this agreement, a team of HTC talent will join Google as part of the hardware organization. These future fellow Googlers are amazing folks we’ve already been working with closely on the Pixel smartphone line, and we’re excited to see what we can do together as one team. The deal also includes a non-exclusive license for HTC intellectual property.”

It will be interesting to see what Google plans on doing with this recent investment, and if the rumors are true, HTC could also be one of the companies behind this year’s Pixel handsets.

HTC Will Still Release A Flagship In 2018 Following Google Deal

As you might have heard, Google and HTC have recently struck up an agreement in which in exchange for $1.1 billion, Google will be getting their hands on some of HTC’s IP in an non-exclusive licensing agreement, as well as the team behind HTC’s smartphones. This isn’t an outright purchase of HTC, but rather a part of the company’s mobile team.

So what does this mean for HTC? The good news for fans of the company is that things are expected to proceed as per usual. In fact come 2018, fans can look forward to HTC launching a new flagship that will be the successor to this year’s HTC U11 smartphone. This is according to HTC’s announcement in which the company basically said that they will be releasing a new phone next year, while at the same time streamlining their existing portfolio.

HTC’s press release reads, “This agreement also supports HTC’s continued branded smartphone strategy, enabling a more streamlined product portfolio, greater operational efficiency and financial flexibility. HTC will continue to have best-in-class engineering talent, which is currently working on the next flagship phone, following the successful launch of the HTC U11 earlier this year.”

We’re not sure what the future holds for HTC after that so we guess we’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime we are also very curious as to what Google’s investment will yield in terms of new products.

Stores Expected To Have More SNES Classic Units In Stock At Launch

One of the problems customers faced last year when trying to get their hands on the NES Classic is that they were constantly out of stock. This is apparently due to Nintendo struggling to keep up with demand, but that’s a problem that Nintendo plans to avoid with the SNES Classic that will be launched this year.

In fact according to a tweet by Wario64 (via US Gamer), a check on Brickseek has discovered that as far as the SNES Classic is concerned, it seems that stores appear to be carrying more stock this year compared to last year’s NES Classic on launch day. There are some stores that could have as many as 96 units available at launch, while others range from 16, 42, or 30, and so on.

Like we said this is considerably more than the NES Classic last year in which some retailers apparently only received 6 units, which might explain why the console was notoriously difficult to get ahold of. Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime was also recently quoted as saying that they expect to have more units available for the SNES Classic, and that customers should avoid paying a premium from third-party websites that are reselling them.

The good news is that even if you were to miss out on getting one this year, Nintendo has confirmed that production of the console is expected to run through 2018, so you can always try your luck then. The NES Classic is also expected to make a return next year, so if you missed out last year then you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for its re-release next year.

Plantronics Launches New BackBeat FIT Series Of Headphones

There are many headphones available in the market today, but with more handset OEMs starting to ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack, it might be time to start exploring more options, such as wireless headphones, which actually could work out to be a lot better especially if you want to use it while at the gym.

In fact the folks at Plantronics have recently taken the wraps off a bunch brand new headphones in the form of the BackBeat FIT 500, the BackBeat FIT 300, the BackBeat FIT Training, and the BackBeat FIT Boost. Starting with the BackBeat FIT 500, these are a pair of on-ear headphones that feature a P2i military-grade nano-coating that is said to protect it against sweat and moisture. Priced at $100 and available in October, the BackBeat FIT 500 will offer up to 18 hours of playback on a single charge.

However if on-ear headphones aren’t for you, the BackBeat FIT 300 are earbuds that will cost $80. They are wireless but not similar to the AirPods, but more similar to the BeatsX, and will offer up to 6 hours of playback. As for the BackBeat FIT Training and BackBeat FIT Boost, these are essentially the same headphones that offer a wireless and waterproof design.

The difference is that with the Training model, you will also gain access to 12 handpicked workouts from the PEAR Personal Coach app and a 6 month Pear+ membership, while the Boost offers all of that, but comes with a charging pouch that claims to add an extra 10 hours of battery life. The Training headphones will retail for $130 while the Boost will go for $160.
