Apple Watch Series 3 With LTE Selling Faster Than Expected

With the launch of the Apple Watch Series 3, Apple finally introduced the option of LTE connectivity, meaning that Apple Watch users could finally untether themselves from their iPhone. Naturally the cellular model costs more and will require customers to subscribe to a data plan. There is also a limitation that does not allow users to use cellular data outside of the country you bought the watch from, but despite those added costs and limitations, the watch is selling better than expected.

This is according to a note sent to investors by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who claims that the Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE is selling faster than they had predicted. According to Kuo, “We forecasted production weighting of the GPS + Cellular version would be 30-40%,” but his latest note to investors has changed that weighting where he now says, “We estimate the pre-order weighting of the GPS + Cellular is 80-90%.”

However to date Apple has yet to share any official numbers with regards to the Apple Watch sales, so in terms of how many units are being moved, or have been moved over the past couple of years is really anyone’s guess, and so far the only numbers we’ve gotten are from research firms. Either way we guess this is probably good news for Apple who have held out from adding cellular capabilities to their smartwatches from the get-go.

iPhone X’s Profit Margins Aren’t As High As You Might Think

The iPhone X is Apple’s most expensive iPhone to date, or at least as far as base models are concerned with the 64GB model priced at $999, way above that of the iPhone 8 whose base model is priced at $699. Now some might argue that Apple could just be greedy and is trying to milk their customers for all their worth.

Given that Apple is still a business at the end of the day, you can’t really fault them for trying to make money, but it seems that despite the iPhone X’s higher price tag, Apple’s profit margins aren’t necessarily higher either. This is according to a report from The Wall Street Journal in which it suggests that the cost to build the iPhone X is actually double that of the previous iPhone.

The report claims that the cost of components for the iPhone X is estimated to be around $581, which is up from the $248 of the iPhone 7, which means that Apple’s profit margins on the iPhone X are actually smaller than that of the iPhone 7. However we should point out that these estimated costs aren’t 100% accurate since Apple could be paying a very different price as they are purchasing in bulk and could command better rates.

Not to mention there are other costs associated with the iPhone that aren’t just its components, like the marketing, R&D, and so on. However it is still an interesting comparison and given the new features and tech used in the iPhone X, it costing more to build doesn’t really come as a complete surprise.

T-Mobile Bumps Unlimited Data Throttling Limit To 50GB

Despite many carriers advertising unlimited data plans, most of the time there is a cap in which should users hit that limit, their speeds will be throttled. For the most part these plans are unlimited, and these caps are put into place to prevent users from abusing it, such as tethering to their computers and downloading movies, games, and music illegally.

T-Mobile has such a cap in place which used to be 32GB, which we reckon for most users is more than enough. However for those who would prefer a bit more breathing space, you’ll be pleased to learn that T-Mobile has since increased that limit to a more generous 50GB. This was initially reported as a leak but T-Mobile has since confirmed the change on their Twitter.

T-Mobile’s cap, which is dubbed the “Fair Usage Threshold” used to be 32GB, which is actually an increase from back in May, so it is pretty obvious that the carrier wants to stay ahead of the competition, such as AT&T and Verizon, both of whom have a monthly limit of 22GB before speeds are throttled, while Sprint offers slightly more than the two at 23GB.

We’re not sure if the other carriers have plans to increase their monthly limits to match T-Mobile, but like we said, there probably aren’t that many who would use 20GB a month, let alone 50GB, so maybe not, but it would still be nice all the same.

Pi Wireless Charging Will Not Require A Charging Mat

Before Apple’s new iPhones were unveiled and wireless charging was confirmed, many had expected Apple’s iPhones to introduce a new breed of wireless charging which could charge from a distance and not require a charging mat. Unfortunately that did not exactly pan out, but not to worry because it seems that there are other companies working on it.

Dubbed Pi, this is a device put together by a startup (also called Pi) that allows users to charge their electronic devices wirelessly and from a distance. If this sounds familiar, it is because Pi is not the first on the scene with such technology. Previously we have seen efforts from the likes of Energous and their WattUp charger which is said to offer charging from distances as far as 15 feet, but like Energous, Pi’s offering will offer a shorter distance, but users can still cut the cord.

As you can see in the image above, Pi is shaped like a cone and from the cone, it will project a charging beam that can shape and direct magnetic fields around the device, so all you need to do is put your device near Pi and it will charge.

Its creators do plan to sell Pi as a standalone product, but they are also talking to partners about integrating the technology into other products, like maybe speakers like the Google Home or Amazon Echo. No word on pricing just yet, but they are looking to priced it below the $200 mark. Those interested can reserve themselves a unit via the company’s website.

Call Of Duty: WWII Story Trailer Released

When you think of games like Battlefield or Call of Duty, there’s a good chance you might associate those titles with its online multiplayer feature, where players can play against others in various matches and modes. However let’s not forget that these games also have a single-player mode where sometimes the multiplayer aspect can overshadow its story.

That being said if you fancy yourself more of a single-player kind of gamer, then you might be interested in checking out the trailer above which is the recently released story trailer for Activision’s upcoming Call of Duty: WWII.

According to the trailer’s description, “Call of Duty: WWII tells the story of Private Ronald “Red” Daniels, a young recruit in the U.S. First Infantry Division who experiences combat for the first time on D-Day, one of the largest amphibious assaults in history. After surviving the beaches of Normandy, Red and his squad will fight their way across Europe, engaging the enemy in iconic battle locations such as the Hürtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge, as they make their way into Germany.”

Call of Duty: WWII is currently set for a release on the 3rd of November where it will find its way to the PS4, Xbox One, and the PC. In fact the game’s open beta for the PC will be kicking off on the 29th of September, although note that this is for the multiplayer aspect of the game.

August Unveils New Smart Locks For Your Home

A lot of smart locks out there for your home can be a bit troublesome to install if you’re not particularly handy or familiar with the process. That’s one advantage that August has over the competition, which is that it makes installation a cinch as it basically replaces your existing inside lock with the smart lock, meaning you won’t have to dismantle the entire thing.

For those who can’t be bothered to hire a locksmith, you might be interested to learn that August has unveiled its new smart lock offerings. One of the new models offered by August will be an entry-level model that will feature a $149 price tag. It also sports a new taller, oval-shaped design with a thumb turn versus the knob design in the previous models, although the downside to its entry-level pricing is that it won’t support Apple’s HomeKit.

For those who don’t mind spending a bit more, the August Smart Lock Pro will be the higher-end model of the two and in terms of design, will feature a similar design to its predecessors. It will also feature improved internals with HomeKit support, Alexa and Google Assistant integration, and Z-Wave Plus compatibility. It also comes with the August Connect WiFi bridge that will allow users to enable remote access, and is priced at $279.

Both the Smart Lock and Smart Lock Pro will also play nicely with August’s DoorSense feature which can tell when a door isn’t closed, and will also work with other features like Auto-Lock that will lock as soon as the door is closed. Both the locks are available in silver and dark grey and will be available starting from today.

Final Fantasy IX Announced For The PS4

According to earlier reports, it was suggested that Square Enix could be getting ready to bring Final Fantasy IX onto the PS4. This was thanks to a sighting by Gematsu in which it appeared that the game received a rating from The Pan European Gaming Information board, and sure enough it looks like the reports were right.

Square Enix has since officially announced that Final Fantasy IX will be making its way onto the PS4. Its release on the PS4 shouldn’t really be all too surprising especially when you consider that the game was initially released on the first PlayStation console way back in 2000. It was later released onto Android and iOS devices, as well as for the PC.

While Square Enix did not confirm whether or not the PS4 version would be a port of the PC version, initial impressions have suggested that it is most likely a port of the PC version, which isn’t necessarily the worst thing, plus isn’t it the gameplay that truly matters, anyway? The game is available starting today so for gamers who want to relive some nostalgia or for gamers who want to see what the fuss is all about, you’ll be able to get your hands on it via the PlayStation Store in Japan.
