More Details Surface About Google’s Cancelled Huawei Nexus Tablet

It has been a while since we last saw a Google-branded Nexus tablet released. However last year there were rumors suggesting that Google was working with Huawei to release a new Nexus tablet that would run on Google’s new rumored operating system, Andromeda. The tablet was later apparently cancelled, and now a new report from 9to5Google has shed some more light on the rumored device.

For starters we should preface this by saying we will never know if this tablet was real in the first place, but 9to5Google has had a pretty good track record so it is possible that their report holds some truths. That being said in terms of specs, the Huawei Nexus tablet was rumored to feature 4GB of RAM and one variant is said to sport 128GB of storage. It was also said that it would feature a “rather fast CPU”, but whether it would use a Qualcomm or NVIDIA chipset is unclear.

9to5Google’s source also described the tablet’s design as being a mix between the Nexus 7 and Nexus 9, although it was supposedly made of cheap materials. The report also claims that the tablet would have come with USB-C connectors. It was unclear why Google cancelled the tablet, but it is said that the company chose to bring Andromeda onto the Chromebook instead.

In fact a report from Android police last month did state that Google has a new Chromebook in the works and that it could be announced alongside the new Pixel 2 handsets, which last we heard is currently set for the 4th of October.

Google Deleting Android Backup After 2 Months Of No Device Usage

If you are sending in your Android phone for repair, or if you’re thinking about trying a different operating system like iOS, then take note that you should either choose to backup your Android phone locally on your computer, or ensure that you return to your Android device (or a new Android device) within 2 months, otherwise your backup will be deleted.

This is according to a recent post on Reddit in which it seems that some users are finding out the hard way that no device usage after 2 months will see your Android backup deleted. According to Google’s support page, users will be “notified” when they go to Google Drive and their Android backup will be marked with a countdown that tells users that it will expire in X number of days, but it seems that many users feel that this is a poor way to inform users about it.

The post on Reddit reads, “There was no warning from Google. They just deleted my data. There’s apparently an expiration date that shows up under the backup if I had checked the Backup folder sooner, but there was no notification, no email, no proactive notice at all, and most importantly, no option to use the 100gb of my Drive storage to keep my fucking backup.”

This means that even if you are paying for Google Drive storage, it does not matter because it will be deleted. We’re not sure why Google has chosen to do this, but this is something to take note of if you’d like to avoid such a situation in the future.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Can Record 4K Video At 60 FPS…Soon

With Apple’s new iPhones, the rumors have been confirmed and that is both the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X will be able to record 4K video at 60 FPS. Unfortunately for the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 which was launched less than a month before, the handset is only capable of recording 4K at 30 FPS.

Or does it? It has been spotted on Samsung’s website (via PhoneArena) that the company is advertising the Note 8 as being able to shoot 4K video at 60 FPS, when in reality the phone at the moment is only capable of shooting 4K at 30 FPS. The caption you can see in the screenshot above reads, “Galaxy Note8 shoots 4K Ultra High Definition video at 60fps, so everything you capture looks stunning and vibrant.”

However like we said, the phone at the moment seems to be only capable of 30 FPS, which has us wondering if the caption on Samsung’s website is wrong, or if 60 FPS is a feature that Samsung has yet to enable for the phone and it is expected to come in a future update. The folks at PhoneArena noted that there is an update for the Note 8 that claims to bring some camera improvements, but apparently this doesn’t seem to do anything new for video, so if you do see that update maybe don’t get so excited just yet.

In any case hopefully Samsung will clear up this bit of confusion soon, but in the meantime 30 FPS isn’t such a bad framerate, so unless you’re a professional videographer that needs the buttery smooth 60 FPS, we reckon that most of you guys should get by with 30 FPS just fine.

Essential Phone To Receive Android 8.0 Oreo Update In Next Few Months

Andy Rubin’s Essential Phone was launched a few months ago and the phone came with Android 7.0 Nougat bundled with it. Given that this is a brand new phone from a brand new company, it does give Rubin and co. a chance to prove themselves to their customers, and one of those ways is through timely updates.

With Android 8.0 Oreo already making its way to Pixel handsets and with various OEMs already working on the update for their devices, the question is when will the Essential Phone receive its tasty treat? The good news is that owners of the phone won’t have to wait too long, according to a recent AMA held on Reddit in which the company confirmed that the phone will receive the Oreo update in the next couple of months.

In response to one of the questions asked by users, Rebecca Zavin, Essential’s VP of Software was quoted as saying, “We are excited about supporting 3rd party developers. We’ll be releasing our kernel and factory images in the next few days. Android O will be coming in the next month or two.”

Given that the company pretty much only has one phone to update at the moment, we guess it makes sense that they will be able to push out the update faster than other OEMs. Apart from the 1-2 month time frame, no specific dates have been mentioned, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more information.
