The Apple Watch Series 2 Has Been Discontinued

At Apple’s iPhone event a few days ago, the company unveiled not just its new iPhones, but it also unveiled the Apple Watch Series 3, which based on the rumors was pretty much to be expected. Unfortunately the launch also signaled the end of one Apple Watch model, and that is 2016’s Series 2.

If you were hoping that you could get the Apple Watch Series 2 on the cheap now that the Apple Watch Series 3 is out, you’d be out of luck because Apple has discontinued the model. This is rather unfortunate since the Series 2 represented a huge upgrade over its predecessor, which means that for now would-be Apple Watch owners have to choose between either the original Apple Watch or the Series 3, although with the price difference of about $80, it does make the original Apple Watch rather tempting.

We suppose the reason behind this is because of the obvious difference in hardware and features between both models, with the original not sporting water resistance or LTE connectivity, while the Series 3 does both, supposedly offers better battery life, and is also more powerful.

However if you’re fine with just the basic features, like sending/receiving messages, calls, emails, music playback control, and a heart rate sensor that you can wear on your wrist, we reckon the original Apple Watch should be more than capable of getting the job done and then some.

Daimler Invests In Super-Fast Electric Vehicle Charging

The problem with electric cars is that they require recharging. You might argue that our regular cars also need to be refueled, but the main difference is that the time it takes to refuel a car is significantly less compared to if you were to charge an electric car. Of course charging times have been cut down quite a bit over the years, but it isn’t necessarily quite as fast yet.

However this is something that Daimler wants to change as the company has managed to raise $60 million in an investment that will help further super-fast EV charging technology. The investment will be going towards an Israeli startup by the name of StoreDot, who has been working on technology that has the potential to fully charge an EV in as little as five minutes.

For those unfamiliar, StoreDot is a company that has been exploring fast-charging technology not just in cars, but also smartphones. Earlier this year, the company unveiled its FlashBattery that they are hoping will replace the lithium-ion batteries in cars in the future. Not only does this battery support super-fast charging, but it is also said to be able to provide a range of about 300 miles.

StoreDot is clearly not the only one working on faster charging tech. Tesla also has its own Supercharger that can fully charge one of its cars in about 2 hours, but if StoreDot can bring that down to 5 minutes, we reckon Tesla’s got their work cut out for them.

Advertisers Up In Arms Over Safari’s Smarter Cookie Blocking Feature

It seems that Apple can’t seem to launch new features for its products without courting some kind of controversy. For example while Face ID might seem like a new and exciting way for users to protect their phones against unauthorized access, law enforcement officials have expressed their displeasure over it.

This is why it doesn’t really come as a surprise to learn that advertisers aren’t too thrilled about a Safari feature in the upcoming iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra updates. In a report from AdWeek, advertising organizations, such as the Interactive Advertising Bureau, American Advertising Federation, the Association of National Advertisers, the 4A’s and a couple of others have expressed their “concern” with Safari’s smarter cookie blocking feature, which they claim will “sabotage” the economic model of the internet.

For those unfamiliar, a Safari feature part of iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra is a feature called “Intelligent Tracking Prevention”, which basically tries to limit how advertisers and websites can track users across the internet, meaning that this feature has the potential to put an end to those creepy ads that you see across the internet that somehow knows what you have searched for in the past.

In an open letter to Apple obtained by AdWeek, the organizations say, “Blocking cookies in this manner will drive a wedge between brands and their customers, and it will make advertising more generic and less timely and useful. Put simply, machine-driven cookie choices do not represent user choice; they represent browser-manufacturer choice.”

Powermats At Starbucks To Be Updated To Support Apple’s iPhones

Apple’s new iPhones will finally support wireless charging, although we should note that they support the Qi wireless charging standard. Given that there are a couple of different standards in existence, it does seem to indicate that there will be some accessories that won’t work with the iPhones.

For example Powermat uses PMA which on paper would suggest that you can’t charge your iPhone using the company’s products, but that isn’t 100% true. In fact the company has recently announced that they will be pushing an update to its Powermat chargers installed in Starbucks in which it will be able to support the new iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and the iPhone X.

Speaking to SlashGear, Powermat Chief Technical Officer Itay Sherman said that this is possible due to the design of Powermat where, “We’ve designed the magnetic part to be as generic as possible to cover all standards if possible … If there’s a new standard, a new variant of the standard —you have PMA, you have Qi, you have Samsung’s Wireless Fast Charging —we can download new software to our points and support them.”

Unfortunately it seems that this isn’t applicable for all of Powermat’s products, meaning that if you were hoping your Powermat charger at home would be similarly update, you probably shouldn’t count on that to happen. No word on when the software will be pushed out to the various Starbucks branches, but if you do plan on buying the new iPhones, then you can expect to be able to charge them at Starbucks outlets in the future.
