Facebook Removes Instant Articles From Messenger

Facebook’s Instant Articles platform is meant to change the way its users read and pay for news on the world’s largest social network. The company continues to tweak just how it uses this platform to present publishers’ content across different mediums. It has now been confirmed the Instant Articles have been removed from Messenger. The platform was previously available on Facebook’s standalone messaging app.

When Instant Articles were first launched over a year ago, they were only designed to be available in News Feed. Facebook later expanded the platform to Messenger as part of its push to provide more features to Messenger users.

“As we continue to refine and improve Instant Articles — and in order to have the greatest impact on people and publishers — we’re focusing our investment in Instant Articles in the Facebook core app and are no longer offering Instant Articles in Messenger,” a spokesperson for the social network confirmed to TechCrunch.

The spokesperson added that Facebook believes that Messenger is an exciting channel for new and interesting news consumption experiences so it’s fully committed to the platform but it doesn’t see the need for it on Messenger just yet.

It’s unclear at this point in time if Facebook is ever going to support this platform in Messenger again. The company hasn’t said anything about its future plans for Instant Articles on Messenger.

Moto X4 Android One Edition Leaked

The much-rumored Moto X4 from Motorola was finally unveiled last month at IFA 2017 in Berlin. The handset has respectable specifications and runs on Android 7.1 Nougat with some customizations made to it by Motorola. However, if a new leak is to be believed, there might be an Android One variant of the Moto X4. It might be the first Android One handset to be officially released in the United States.

Evan Blass a.k.a @evleaks has published a render of a Moto X4 with the “Android One” branding at the back. This tiny stamp could indicate that Motorola might have made a variant of this handset with stock Android.

If this is true, it’s going to be the first Android One handset for the U.S. market. It won’t surprise anyone, given that it has been reported multiple times that Google might finally expand its Android One program to its home country.

The Android One variant is simply going to have a stock version of Android. All other specifications should remain the same. In that case, it’s going to have a 5.2 inch full HD display with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor under the hood coupled with up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

It also touts a 12 megapixel and 8 megapixel dual camera system as well as a 16 megapixel front facing camera.

No word as yet on the pricing and availability details for this handset.

Free HBO Now Included In AT&T Unlimited Choice Plan

After announcing the subscribers on its Unlimited Plus plan will receive free access to HBO with their wireless plan back in April this year, AT&T has now confirmed that subscribers on both of its unlimited plans will be able to get HBO for free. AT&T has confirmed today that its new and existing Unlimited Choice customers will get HBO starting Friday, September 15th.

HBO is now included in both the AT&T Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Choice plans whether the customer has 1 line or 10 lines. The price stays the same. This means that a subscriber on the Unlimited Choice plan gets unlimited talk, text, data, and HBO for $60 per month.

Customers on both plans will continue to receive a $25 per month video credit on applicable AT&T video services. Unlimited Plus customers can use their credit on DirecTV, DirecTV Now, and U-verse TV. AT&T Unlimited Choice customers can apply the credit to their DirecTV Now subscription.

Customers already paying for an existing AT&T video service will get HBO added for no extra charge to their existing plan. Current HBO subscribers will no longer have to pay for access to the cable network. Those who don’t want to access HBO through an AT&T video service will be able to access the network through DirecTV Now and HBO GO apps.

Samsung Confirms Harman-Made AI Speaker For Next Year

Samsung today confirmed that it’s going to launch an artificial intelligence-powered smart speaker made by Harman in the first half of next year. In case you’re unaware, Harman International was acquired by Samsung about a year ago. Samsung’s mobile division chief Dongjin Koh confirmed during the Korean Media Day for the Galaxy Note 8 at Samsung’s Seocho Office that the company has been collaborating with Harman since the acquisition.

Yoon Boo-keun, president of the CE Business Division at Samsung, said during the IFA 2017 event last month that it’s highly likely that a competitive AI speaker will be unveiled next year by Koh.

Koh has said that it’s going to be difficult for the company to unveil the speaker at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018 in January as more time is needed to ensure that this project produces better results.

What this means is that Samsung may not be in a position to take the wraps off of its new smart speaker until the first half of next year so we’ll likely have to wait for quite a long time before we can see what the speaker is capable of.

Samsung is also working on researching voice recognition data technology based on cloud service, said Doh Young-soo, a managing director at Samsung’s home appliance division.

Instagram Stories Can Now Be Shared Through Direct Messages

Instagram may have taken inspiration for its popular Stories feature from Snapchat but it has left the latter far behind as far as sheer numbers go. Instagram Stories is now more popular than Snapchat and the Facebook-owned service continues to introduce new ways to get people to share more stories. The latest involves enabling users to share other people’s stories through Direct messages on Instagram.

Instagram launched location and hashtag stories in May this year so that they surfaced more frequently in Explore. This enabled the company to http://blog.instagram.com/post/165260573787/170912-sharing-stories-directhttp://blog.instagram.com/post/165260573787/170912-sharing-stories-direct for the feature.

The latest step is also along the same lines, though it might be a cause for concern for some users since Instagram is now enabling users to share other users’ stories through Direct messages.

Users just have to tap on the Direct icon at the bottom right when they’re viewing a story and they can then choose who they want to share the Story with. As is the case with all stories, they last for 24 hours only so if the recipient doesn’t check it before the time is up, they won’t be able to view it.

Instagram says that this feature will enable its users to share stories that they find interesting with other users. However, some users might not feel comfortable about the idea of letting other people share their stories with complete strangers.

For this reason, Instagram is offering an opt-out in settings. Nothing changes for those who have a Private account as their stories will only be visible to their followers through Direct messages.

Samsung Looking To Produce Z-SSDs From Next Year

Samsung is already a leader in the NAND memory market and it appears that the company is getting ready to get a leg up on its competition. A new report out of South Korea claims that Samsung has recently developed a Z-NAND chip and a controller optimized for this chip. It’s expected to start mass production of this new memory chip from next year.

According to the report, these new memory products are in test production phase at this point in time and Samsung has only recently started discussing supply with potential clients.

Z-NAND memory products will be smaller in capacity as they’re based on a single level cell. One bit is allocated to each cell. The smaller capacity notwithstanding, Z-NAND memory products will offer gains in speed and power efficiency.

It’s claimed that a Z-SSD featuring this sort of a NAND ship will have a reading speed that’s about seven times greater than conventional solid state drives.

Samsung is reportedly gearing up to mass produce Z-SSDs in order to compete with the 3D Xpoint SSD technology from Intel. This next-generation memory product from Intel promises speed and durability that greatly surpasses that of existing NAND-based products on the market.

Samsung has not yet commented on its plans for Z-SSDs.
