It’s easy enough to put an always-on camera somewhere it can live off solar power or the grid, but deep in nature, underground, or in other unusual circumstances every drop of power is precious. Luckily, a new type of sensor developed for DARPA uses none at all until the thing it’s built to detect happens to show up. That means it can sit for years without so much as a battery top-up. With Android 8.0 Oreo already finding its way to Pixel handsets, we’re sure that there are many Android users out there who are curious as to when their non-Pixel phones will receive the update. While we can’t speak for the rest of the Android OEMs out there, it seems that Samsung is already working on it.
According to a report from SamMobile, it has been revealed that Samsung is working on bringing Android 8.0 Oreo onto their flagship phones, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+. Samsung has yet to officially announce anything as this report comes from SamMobile’s sources, but given the flagship nature of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ and that they were only released this year, it wouldn’t really surprise us if the report is true.
There is no mention of the Galaxy Note 8 and its Android 8.0 Oreo update status, but we also wouldn’t be surprised if development for the handset wasn’t too far behind that of the Galaxy S8 and S8+. Unfortunately there is no timeline as to when the update will be released, but hopefully Galaxy S8, S8+, and even Note 8 users can expect to receive the update by the end of the year.
In the meantime it looks like other companies such as OnePlus have already pushed the update, which is still in testing, to its closed beta group for the OnePlus 3.

Apple is expected to officially announce its new iPhones tomorrow and according to a tweet by Australian journalist Luke Hopewell (via 9to5Mac), it seems that over in Sydney, Australia, there are queues forming outside Apple’s Sydney store in which customers are already preparing to get their hands on the phone for when it is released.
We should point out that Apple’s release schedule is typically a week or so after the phone is announced, which means that these customers will have to stand/sit/camp in line for at least a week before they are able to get their hands on the phone, although we guess it probably also means that they’ll be the first to get the phones upon their release.

We’re not sure which models these customers are camping for since the reports are claiming that Apple could release three models this year: the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the iPhone X. However there have been rumors that suggests that the iPhone X could be delayed and not released alongside the standard models, which means that customers lining up for the iPhone X could potentially be in for a longer wait.
In any case we should find out soon when the iPhones will be released, so remember to check back with us tomorrow if you’d like the details.

If there is one drawback to OLED screens is that they are prone to burn-ins, which is basically when an image is displayed on the phone for too long, in which a “ghost” of the image can physically be burnt into the screen. This is an issue for a lot of display types, but it seems to be especially prone for OLEDs.
However according to a report from 9to5Mac, it seems that the recently leaked iOS 11 GM contains some references that Apple has plans for burn-in mitigation for the OLED iPhone X. The firmware itself does not mention what kind of mitigation we are looking at, but it does mention that Apple does have plans for it.
It is also unclear if these are settings that users can enable/disable themselves, or if it is enabled on a system level, which presumably will be the case since why would anyone want to disable the mitigation feature, right? We have seen how some other companies have tried to mitigate the problem, like in the case of Samsung and the Galaxy S8 in which the company relies on constant pixel shifting.
The iPhone X will be the first ever iPhone to sport an OLED display, or so the rumors claim, and if anything it seems that the burn-in mitigation reference in iOS 11 more or less confirms it, but either way all the details should be revealed tomorrow.

Apple Given Last Minute Permission To Hold iPhone Event At Steve Jobs Theater
Posted in: Today's ChiliPrior to Apple confirming that they will be hosting its iPhone event on the 12th of September, there were quite a few reports that also hinted at that date. However some of the reports claimed that the event could be postponed as Apple had planned to host it at the Steve Jobs Theater on its new campus, but they weren’t sure if it could be completed in time.
Obviously things have gone according to plan since the event time, date, and location have all been confirmed, but a new report from VentureBeat claims that it nearly wasn’t held at the location Apple wanted. The report cites records from the City of Cupertino in which Apple applied for a Temporary Occupancy Permit for the theater.
VentureBeat points out that this permit basically says that a structure has been inspected (and presumably approved) for use, but at the same time there is work that still needs to be done. The permit was applied for on the 8th of August and was only granted on the 1st of September by an official in the Cupertino building department, saying that all fire and safety systems have been checked out and that Apple will be able to use the building temporarily.
We’re not sure if Apple would have postponed the event if they could not get the Steve Jobs Theater ready in time, or if they would have found another venue, although given that this marks the 10th anniversary for the iPhone, the event hosted at the Steve Jobs Theater would be rather meaningful.

If the rumors are true, Apple’s next-gen iPhone could cost upwards of $1,000, making it pretty damn expensive as far as flagship phones are concerned. However we suppose that is also why programs like the iPhone Upgrade Program exists, where iPhone users can upgrade to the newer models by trading in their older ones.
However this typically involved customers having to physically visit an Apple Store, but that has changed. As spotted by a MacRumors forum member (via AppleInsider), it seems that Apple has added a new option for customers in the program in the form of a mail-in option. What this means is that customers will be able to mail-in their old iPhone and trade that in for the newer models.
Customers will be given a trade-in kit which includes a box for the old iPhone, as well as a prepaid shipping label where they will send their old phones back to Apple for processing. Hopefully this will be a better solution than last year, where customers had to schedule trade-in appointments, and where supply issues with the iPhone 7 resulted in customers part of the program being unable to get their hands on the newer models.
That being said, there have been reports that claim that Apple’s new iPhone X could be delayed and might not be shipped alongside the standard models. We’re not sure if Apple is setting aside more units for customers in its trade-in program, but we guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
