Unfortunately for owners of its more or less recent Android phones, they will be running into those limits hard. In an interview with UTB Blogs, Alex Thurber, BlackBerry Mobile Solutions General … Continue reading

Uber Facing Federal Investigation For Possibly Interfering With Lyft

Uber during its early days was accused of being rather anticompetitive in nature by coming up with various ways to interfere with its competition, like Lyft, such as calling and requesting for Lyft rides only to cancel them. The company had even at one point supposedly ran a computer program called “Hell” that spied on its competitors.

While the company is definitely trying to clean up its act these days, it seems that the past is coming back to haunt them as Uber is now facing federal investigation by the FBI (via Engadget) as to whether or not its Hell software had illegally interfered with Lyft’s operations. For those unfamiliar, the software exploited vulnerability in Lyft’s systems to spy on the company’s drivers over the course of 2 years, from 2014 to early 2016.

The data was used to determine which drivers drove for both Lyft and Uber, and then tried to entice those drivers to work exclusively for Uber. Uber has since issued a statement to The Wall Street Journal and have stated that they are cooperating with the investigation, which is currently trying to figure out if the use of the Hell software could be considered as unauthorized access to a computer system.

Like we said, Uber is in the process of trying to clean up the negative image that the public has of them, which is by introducing new policies that will protect rider and drivers, as well as appointing a new CEO.

This Is How Apple’s Face ID Setup Process Looks Like

According to the rumors, the upcoming iPhone 8 is said to feature a new security system in the form of facial recognition, which might apparently actually act as a replacement for Touch ID (and also represents a huge gamble on Apple’s part). We’ve yet to see how the feature will work out, but its setup process has been leaked.

In a post on Twitter by developer Guilherme Rambo (via 9to5Mac), the setup process for Face ID has been revealed. As you can see in the video below, it seems similar to Touch ID in terms of setting up, where users are required to move their head around to allow the camera to capture various aspects and angles of the user’s face.

This is particularly interesting and for the most part it also seems to confirm one of the rumored advantages of the feature, which is apparently that it can work even with the iPhone lying on the table. This is presumably because by capturing various angles of the user’s face, than even when the phone is lying prone on a surface, it’s camera can still recognize the user’s face.

This is versus currently facial recognition systems or even iris scanning systems where you would have to hold the phone up to your face in order for it to work. As to how effective Apple’s facial recognition system is remains to be seen, but so far reports are claiming that it is well ahead of the competition, but we guess we’ll have to wait and find out for ourselves come 12th of September.

iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, And iPhone X Names Confirmed

With Apple rumored to launch 3 new iPhones this year, many are wondering what the devices will be called. Apple’s naming scheme in the past has suggested that this year’s iPhones could be called the iPhone 7s, the 7s Plus, and the iPhone 8 for the OLED model, but apparently that will not be the case.

In a tweet by developer Steve Troughton-Smith, it seems that thanks to the recently leaked iOS 11 GM that the names of this year’s iPhones have been revealed. The “standard” models will apparently be known as the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, while the OLED iPhone will apparently be known as the iPhone X.

This is actually not the first time we have heard that name. It was reported earlier that the OLED model will be called the iPhone X as it is supposed to represent the iPhone’s 10th anniversary, hence the Roman numeral X is being used. It does break from tradition as far as iPhone naming schemes are concerned, but we guess it is also rather appropriate.

In any case we should have the official details come 12th of September which is when Apple will be making the new iPhones official, so do be sure to check back with us then for more details and for the confirmation.

Apple’s A11 Fusion Chipset Will Apparently Sport 6 Cores

When Apple launched the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus last year, they also introduced a brand new chipset in the form of the A10 Fusion which is Apple’s first quad-core chipset to debut in an iPhone. Prior to that Apple’s chipsets have typically been of the dual-core variety, so the step up to quad-core was a huge shift.

However that will apparently be changing with this year’s iPhones. Developer Steve Troughton-Smith recently tweeted (via AppleInsider) that with the A11 Fusion chipset expected to debut on this year’s iPhones, Apple is rumored to introduce a 6 core chipset which is said to consist of four high-powered “Mistral” cores and two “Monsoon” cores.

In a way this is similar to the big.LITTLE architecture whereby chipsets will sport multiple cores, but with some cores being dedicated for more powerful/intensive applications, while the other cores will be used for less intensive applications or processes. The idea is that this will improve efficiency, and also at the same time help conserve battery life since the less powerful cores will be utilized for more mundane tasks.

It should be noted that the A11 Fusion will not be Apple’s first hexa-core chipset. That honor actually belongs to the A10X Fusion that debuted in this year’s 12.9-inch and 10.5-inch iPad Pros, but it will mark the first time that the iPhones will be getting a hexa-core chipset, although at this point it is unclear if the A11 Fusion will be exclusive to the iPhone X, or if it will be available across Apple’s 2017 iPhone lineup.

Confirmed: BlackBerry PRIV Will Not Receive Android Nougat Update

If there is one reassuring thing that iPhone users can expect from Apple, it is in the form of software updates for major releases. Take for example the upcoming iOS 11 which will actually support devices as old the iPhone 5s which was released four years ago in 2013. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for Android, and the BlackBerry PRIV is the perfect example.

The BlackBerry PRIV was launched 2 years ago, but it seems that in a recent podcast on UTB Blogs (via CrackBerry), it has been confirmed that the handset will not be receiving the update to Android 7.0 Nougat. This was confirmed by the GM of BlackBerry Mobility, Alex Thurber. According to Thurber, he claims that the amount of work required to get all of the partners together to bring Nougat to the PRIV was “next to impossible”.

What this means is that as far as official updates are concerned, the PRIV will remain on Android 6.0 Marshmallow until its EOL status. However if there is one major advantage Android has over iOS, it is that it is open source, which means that there are plenty of custom ROMs out there for Android users that are based on major Android builds.

This means that PRIV owners should be able to find an Android custom ROM based on Nougat to update their phones to, or they could even find one that is based on the Android 8.0 Oreo update, although we suppose having an official release would make things a lot easier for the less tech savvy users.

China To Set Deadline To End Sales Of Fossil Fuel-Powered Cars

It is clear that the future of cars is that they will be going electric and possibly fully autonomous too. However for now, fossil fuel still remains the “popular” choice, and that’s something that countries want to change, such as Germany who hopes to ban internal combustion engines by 2030, while Norway wants to ban gas-powered cars as early as 2025.

Now it looks like China also wants to put an end to fossil fuel-powered cars, and in a report from Bloomberg, the country’s government is said to be working with regulators in coming up with a deadline in which carmakers will have to put an end to the production and sales of fossil fuel-powered cars, at least as far as China’s market is concerned.

China’s pollution is pretty well-known and at one point in time it got so bad where they had to issue a red alert to its residents, so the move at removing fossil fuel-powered cars doesn’t come as a surprise. The country’s government has vowed to cap its carbon emissions by 2030. According to Liu Zhijia, an assistant general manager at Chery Automobile, he expects that such a ban might only come into effect in 2040.

Liu was quoted as saying, “The implementation of the ban for such a big market like China can be later than 2040. That will leave plenty of time for everyone to prepare.” That being said despite these measures, it was previously estimated by the Organization Of Petroleum Exporting Countries that in 2040, electric cars will still only make up 1% of the global car market.
