Facebook Introduces Blood Donations Feature In India

Facebook is great for connecting people together. It’s great for following bands, actors, and brands that you like, great for getting the latest news and topics that are relevant to you, and now it seems that over in India, Facebook could soon become handy when it comes to increasing blood donations.

Facebook has recently announced new feature in India in the form of blood donations, where users can sign up to be blood donors and connect them with people or organizations that might need their blood. According to Facebook, “In the next few weeks, we’ll also make it easier for people and organizations, such as blood banks and hospitals, to connect with blood donors on Facebook.”

“When individuals or organizations are in need of blood, they’ll be able to create a special type of post with all the information donors need to easily offer help. When a request is created, Facebook will automatically notify blood donors who may be nearby to help spread the word.” When donors receive a request, they can review it and choose to respond and can then contact the requestor through a number of platforms like WhatsApp, Messenger, or call them.

Given that Facebook seems to be pretty good at letting users know of nearby events that they might be interested in, this feature actually makes sense and is a good use of the technology, plus it could save lives. No word on whether this feature could find its way to other parts of the world, but for now it will be limited to India.

HMD Global Launches 3G Version Of The Nokia 3310

Earlier this year the folks at HMD Global announced that they will be relaunching the Nokia 3310 which is probably one of the most iconic phones in history. The company gave it a new look and also some new features, but it seems that the phone wasn’t really updated for modern times as it was missing 3G connectivity.

This is why the Nokia 3310 was not launched in the US as 2G is one of the older networks that carriers across the country are in the process of shutting down. However for those in the US who want the Nokia 3310, you could be in luck because HMD Global has recently taken the wraps off the Nokia 3310 3G.

As the name implies, this is the Nokia 3310 with 3G capabilities. Of course in this day and age where 4G LTE is becoming the standard and with 5G networks already being developed, 3G certainly does seem like an odd choice, but we guess it’s better than nothing. In addition to the 3G compatibility, the handset will be launched in new color options and will also sport a brand new user interface.

There is no confirmation of whether or not it will be launched stateside, but like we said the choice to make the phone 3G compatible could indicate that it could work in the US should you choose to import it. It is expected to be rolled out mid-October where it will be priced at €69.

iPhone 8 VS Samsung Galaxy Note 8 In Speed Test

Last year when Apple launched the iPhone 7 with the new A10 Fusion chipset, a speed test was conducted and it was pretty clear that the A10 Fusion was a chipset not to be messed with as for the most part, it appeared to demolish the competition. Of course refinements have been made since then, but the question is how will the new A11 Bionic hold up?

The folks at PhoneBuff are back with another speed test and this time it pits the brand new iPhone 8 against Samsung’s latest flagship, the Galaxy Note 8. Note that just like the previous speed tests, this can hardly be considered a scientific test, but it does give us a general idea of what we can expect in terms of speed and how either handset handles the launching of apps and memory management.

In the test, it seems that both phones were neck to neck in the launching of apps, and where the Note 8 actually managed to get a head start, but the iPhone 8 ultimately finished the first lap with a time of 1 minute 27.35 seconds, versus the Note 8 which completed it in 1 minute 30.48 seconds.

However the second lap saw the iPhone 8 struggle and where it ultimately lost to the Note 8 which completed the second lap in 2 minutes 1.58 seconds, versus the iPhone 8 which took 2 minutes 7.79 seconds. The difference of about 6 seconds isn’t too big of a lead, but it is clear that the new Snapdragon 835 and the 6GB of RAM definitely played a role in the Note 8 cinching a victory.

Apple Publishes Whitepaper On Its Face ID Technology

Apple’s new iPhone X is taking a huge gamble by choosing to implement a new security feature in the form of Face ID. Apple isn’t just introducing a new security system, but they’ve also removed an existing security system with Touch ID, one that has been tried and proven over the past few years.

That being said, clearly there are some doubts and concerns over the effectiveness of Face ID, especially with regards to privacy, which is why Apple has since published a whitepaper that explains how Face ID works, and potentially addresses some privacy concerns that users might have when using the feature.

Apple also goes into detail and explains some of the technology behind Face ID, and how it is able to recognize your face and how it keeps itself relevant over time as your face and facial features might change with age. “To improve unlock performance and keep pace with the natural changes of your face and look, Face ID augments its stored mathematical representation over time. Upon successful unlock, Face ID may use the newly calculated mathematical representation — if its quality is sufficient — for a finite number of additional unlocks before that data is discarded.”

It is an interesting read and if you are curious about Face ID and how it works then head on over to Apple’s website for the details. In the meantime the iPhone X is set for a release this November which means that in a few months, we will know whether or not Apple’s latest gamble will pay off.
