Patent Troll Ends Up Paying Kaspersky To Settle Lawsuit

How patent trolls work is that they take a patent they own, which can sometimes be rather vague, and sue a company (or multiple companies) over it. The reason they do it is because most of the time companies would much prefer to settle it rather than drag it out in a long-drawn legal battle.

However it seems that in the case of Kaspersky, the patent troll ended up paying them money instead. In a report from ArsTechnica, it seems that Kaspersky was hit with a lawsuit by a company called Wetro Lan, who alleged that Kaspersky had infringed upon a patent related to firewalls. It seems that Wetro Lan had success with that patent as many companies sued by them apparently settled within a short amount of time, but not in the case of Kaspersky whose lawyers were adamant about not paying them a single cent.

According to Kaspersky’s lead lawyer Casey Kniser, Wetro Lan’s settlement demands kept dropping from their initial demand of $60,000 all the way down to $10,000. However Kniser held firm and actually told them that they should pay Kaspersky $10,000 instead, where eventually Wetro Lan agreed to drop the case and pay the company $5,000.

Kniser told Ars, “From our point of view, we had a winning case. We had invalidity contentions that were good. For that effort, we didn’t want to pay them money. It didn’t seem fair that they should be able to just walk away.”

JBL Unveils Jr. Headphones Designed For Kids In Mind

#IFA2017 – There are some parents who argue that giving headphones to your kids is a bad idea because it could damage their hearing. Perhaps kids at a younger age might not realize that listening to music or watching videos at high volumes can have a permanent effect on their hearing.

Now if you’re a parent worried about their kids using headphones, then you might want to consider JBL’s latest offerings which comes in the form of the JBL Jr. headphone lineup. These are headphones designed for kids in mind and will come in wired and wireless versions, with one of the key features being that it will keep the volume at supposed “safe” levels.

According to JBL, “The JBL Safe Sound feature ensures volume maxes out at 85dB, keeping audio at safe levels for little ears.” This means that even if they crank up the volume it will never go beyond 85dB, so parents can rest assured knowing that it won’t damage their child’s hearing in the long run.

The headphones have also been designed to be comfortable and will feature a soft-padded adjustable headband and cushioned ear cups. They have also been designed to be relatively rugged, so parents won’t have to worry about their child wrecking the headphones, or at least not immediately. If this is something you might be interested in, the wireless version of the headphones will retail for €50 while the wired version will go for €25, and both are expected to be available this September.

JBL Boombox Portable Speakers Launched With 24 Hours Battery Life

#IFA2017 – If you’re in the market for a new set of Bluetooth speakers, but you wanted something with a bit more oomph in terms of sound, obviously getting those tiny pocket-sized Bluetooth speakers aren’t the way to go about it. In fact just recently JBL has taken the wraps off a new Bluetooth speaker in the form of the JBL Boombox.

For those unfamiliar, the boombox used to be a thing back in the 1980s where people would carry hulking speakers on their shoulders and walk around with, and that’s kind of the feel that JBL is apparently going for. The speakers will weigh over 11 pounds and is nearly 20-inches long, so while they are portable in the sense that no wires are required, they’re not really something you can just toss inside of your backpack.

The speakers will feature a massive 20,000mAh battery that the company claims will offer up to 24 hours of playtime, and it can also charge other devices as well. It is also IPX7 rated which means that taking it to the beach or to pool parties should not be an issue. As for the speakers themselves, it will feature four active transducers and two bass radiators.

Unfortunately as far as Bluetooth speakers are concerned, the JBL Boombox will not come cheap. It is priced at €499 and is expected to be made available on the 19th of September.

Harman Kardon Allure Alexa Speakers Launched

#IFA2017 – There are a few Alexa-powered speakers available in the market today, but in case you’re shopping about for more alternatives, you might be interested to learn that Harman Kardon has recently taken the wraps off their latest set of speakers called the Harman Kardon Allure.

As you can see from the design, it seems that the Allure will be retaining some of the design language of Harman Kardon’s iconic SoundSticks speakers. However one of the main differences is that the Allure comes with Alexa integration, so users can use their voice to command the speaker and the AI to do tasks for them, like call them an Uber, read the news, order a pizza, and so on.

The speakers themselves will be able to radiate 360-degree sound, so placing it in the middle of the room should allow the sound to fill up to the room without any issue. There is also 360-degree ambient lighting so if you wanted a set of speakers that can also double as furniture, then the Allure’s lighting should help with that. The Allure is also wireless and will pair with devices via Bluetooth.

If these speakers sound like something you’d like to put in your home, then they will be available this coming winter for $249.95.
