We can all agree that one of the most annoying things about keeping modern gadgets topped off is having to mess with wires. This is one reason why smartphone makers like Apple are integrating wireless charging into their devices. The recently released iPhone 8 smartphone has wireless charging capability for instance. Perhaps even more annoying than plugging in gadgets is … Continue reading

When Apple launched the iPhone X, one of the new features of the iPhone was the introduction of Face ID which is a facial recognition system. This went against earlier rumors that suggested that Apple would be trying to implement an under screen fingerprint sensor, but instead it seems like Apple decided to do away with Touch ID completely.
However could it be that Apple is still exploring that idea? In a recently discovered patent, it seems that the Cupertino company has patented an idea of an ultrasonic force sensor which could potentially be used for an under screen Touch ID. This is actually not the first time we have heard that Apple could have used ultrasonic technology to scan for fingerprints, and Apple is also not alone in exploring that idea as companies such as Qualcomm have come up with similar solutions.
Some have questioned Apple’s decision to launch Face ID, and a report from earlier this month suggested that the decision was made well in advance and that it was not a last minute decision. The report claims that Apple had explored the idea for an under screen fingerprint sensor, but early on decided that facial recognition held more potential.
We are also hearing rumors that in 2018, there is a chance that all of Apple’s iPhones could come with Face ID should the feature be well-received when the iPhone X is released later this November.

It was just the other day that Apple released the macOS High Sierra update which introduced a bunch of new features to the macOS platform. One of those features is automated weekly checks of your Mac’s firmware that is meant to determine if your firmware is “good” as per Apple’s definition.
However it seems that despite Apple introducing new safety and security measures, a rather nasty bug has somehow managed to slip past Apple’s radar. According to a report from Forbes, a bug within macOS High Sierra has been discovered that could potentially reveal the passwords of the user, no thanks to keychain security vulnerability that was discovered by ex-NSA analyst Patrick Wardle.
The passwords stored within the keychain can be obtained by unlocking it with a master password, as is usually the case. However Wardle discovered that the bug allowed hackers to run malicious code on a Mac to steal passwords from the keychain, which he demonstrates in the video above.
Speaking to Forbes, Wardle was quoted as saying, “Without root priveleges, if the user is logged in, I can dump and exfiltrate the keychain, including plaintext passwords. Normally you are not supposed to be able do that programmatically.” The full exploit isn’t revealed (naturally) and he expects that Apple should patch the vulnerability soon enough.

It has been a while since the Android 8.0 Oreo update has started to make its way onto various Android handsets, but it looks like there are still quite a bit of issues with the update. In a recent tweet by Android Police’s Artem Russakovskii, it seems that the Settings app keeps crashing following the update.
However this only seems to happen when trying to view mobile or WiFi data usage, meaning that in all other instances it is not an issue. Russakovskii does not appear to be alone with this particular issue as quite a few other Android users have since come forward and claimed that they are experiencing this issue as well.
What’s particularly interesting is that it appears that based on the Issue Tracker, this problem has been discovered as early in March by someone at Xiaomi, and that apparently a fix was submitted to the master branch of AOSP, but it did not seem to make the Oreo release branch for the Pixel XL, which appears to be the handset experiencing the issue.
Not every Android user is affected by this problem so if you don’t experience it then we guess that’s a good thing. It’s not exactly a huge bug, but just an annoying one that hopefully Google will address in future updates to the platform.

iOS 11 was released not too long ago, but as is the case with most new software releases, there are bound to be teething issues. One of those issues, which seems to be particularly annoying, is how some users are claiming that the update has slowed down their apps, and there are also reports of excessive battery drain.
However the good news is that Apple has the solution to those problems (we hope). The company has recently released the iOS 11.0.1 update which is supposed to bring about various bug fixes and performance improvements to the platform. We’re not sure if this update will address all the problems that users have encountered, but hopefully those who are finding their apps are slower or experiencing battery drain will find those issues rectified.
Apple did not state what was fixed so we have no idea if the update has addressed all the issues, but like we said hopefully it has, or at the very least we guess some problems have been addressed. In the meantime the adoption of iOS 11 appears to be slower than its predecessors, with a reported adoption of 10% in the first 24 hours, which is pretty fast for a mobile platform update, is pretty slow when you consider older iOS releases.

When it comes to wearables like smartwatches or fitness trackers, Microsoft only has the Microsoft Band. However as far back in 2013, there were rumors that Microsoft could be developing an Xbox-branded wearable. Now thanks to photos posted by SuomiMobiili (via Neowin), we might have an idea of what Microsoft was working on.
On the surface, the device doesn’t look too striking or different from the smartwatches and fitness trackers we see today. However on the underside, as you can see in the photos above, the Xbox branding is pretty clear. We can’t say for sure if these images are the real deal or if they are fake, but if such a device did exist we wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft had created several prototypes.
According to the report, the device in question was rumored to have been slated for a release in 2015, but obviously that did not happen. We’re not sure why Microsoft decided to abandon the Xbox smartwatch, but perhaps they felt that such a device could be too niche. That being said, we’re sure not what the future holds for Microsoft’s wearables.
The last time we saw Microsoft release a wearable was with the Band 2, and last year the device was taken off the Microsoft online store. Microsoft claims to have sold through the inventory, but there have also been rumors that the company could be discontinuing the Band devices despite rumors and photos of the Band 3 making its rounds.
