Verizon HTC One M9 Nougat Update Released

Those who are holding on to the HTC One M9 on Verizon can rejoice today as the carrier has finally started rolling out the Android 7.0 Nougat update for this device. They’ve been made to wait a considerable amount of time, particularly when you consider the fact that the unlocked HTC One M9 received its Nougat update in December last year. That’s a heck of a long time to wait for a firmware update.

Verizon is now rolling out build number 4.49.605.11 to HTC One M9 owners on its network. The update bumps up the core Android version to 7.0 and brings all of the features that are part and parcel of Nougat. The update also includes the August 2017 security patch.

It was actually confirmed in June last year that the HTC One M9 would receive the Nougat update. When the unlocked version got it in December, many expect that it would land on the Verizon version in the near future. Little did they know that users will practically have to wait for an entire year before they could get a taste of Nougat.

The HTC One M9 Nougat update is now being rolled out by Verizon over-the-air. It should go live for all users across the country in the near future.

WhatsApp Has Been Blocked In China

The world’s largest cross-platform messaging service has now been blocked in the world’s largest smartphone market. China is no stranger to blocking access to online services and it appears to have properly turned its attention to WhatsApp. While the Facebook-owned service was partially blocked in the country before, according to latest reports, WhatsApp has now been entirely blocked in China.

There are a plethora of services that we use on a daily basis which are blocked in China. These include Facebook, Twitter, many of Google’s services, Wikipedia, and others. WhatsApp has now joined that list.

WhatsApp was partially blocked previously. Features like video chats didn’t work but it was possible to communicate over messages. That’s no longer possible now.

The New York Times opines that WhatsApp’s strong encryption technology might have drawn the attention of Chinese censors. WhatsApp messages are encrypted end-to-end, which means that the service itself doesn’t know the content of messages so it can’t turn them over when asked by a government.

With WhatsApp being blocked in the country, the majority of the users have switched to a local alternative called WeChat. It’s owned and operated by a local internet behemoth called Tencent.

Facebook has not yet commented on the matter, though that’s not out of the ordinary when it’s asked about issues faced by its services in China.

Amazon Music App Gets Alexa Voice Controls

Amazon today announced that Alexa is now available inside its music streaming app for iOS and Android in the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, and Austria. The Amazon Music app now has Alexa baked right in. It’s capable of offering a blend of natural language voice controls with a compelling visual app experience.

“Now our mobile listeners can enjoy an entirely new app experience that combines the power and simplicity of Alexa voice controls with the visual richness of the Amazon Music app,” said Steve Boom, the vice president of Amazon Music.

Amazon Music users on iOS and Android in the aforementioned markets can either browse the app interface like they used to before or just ask Alexa to find music for them. They can access Alexa inside the app by using the push-to-talk function.

Customers can ask Alexa for music based on genre, decade, tempo, mood, activity or even with lyrics when they can’t quite remember the name of the song that’s stuck in their head.

They can give Alexa voice commands like “Play Coldplay from the 2000s,” “Play pop music for lifting weights,” or “Play the new song by Fifth Harmony” to get Amazon Music to surface the kind of tracks they want to hear.

Amazon Music users on iOS and Android in the US, UK, Austria, and Germany can now use Alexa inside the app.
