Nexus 5X, 6P will get security updates until November 2018

The Nexus device line is practically dead. The Pixel is Google’s new smartphone flagship and reference device and the Android One program seems to have been revamped to take the Nexus’ place. There has been no official confirmation of course, but Google’s latest action seems to support that speculation. It has just quietly extended the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P … Continue reading

iPhone 8 Owners Reporting Static Noise During Calls

If you’ve recently gotten yourself a new iPhone 8 or 8 Plus and are sometimes hearing static noise during your phone calls, you can rest assured knowing that you don’t have a defective unit and that you’re not alone. According to a report from MacRumors, it seems that quite a few owners of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are experiencing it too.

According to one MacRumors forum member Jgpsolo, “It is a high-pitched crackle like an audio pop that happens in the earpiece top speaker intermittently during calls. Some calls are fine and others crackle. It is not audible on earphones or on speakerphone, only through the earpiece. The caller on the other end doesn’t hear it.”

So why do we say that it isn’t a defective unit? It is because it is speculated that it could be a software issue with the phone, rather than a hardware one. Jgpsolo adds, “I don’t know whether this is hardware or software related, but one thing that made me think it’s software related is that if you switch on to speakerphone for a few seconds then back to earpiece, the crackles resolve for the duration of the rest of the call. If this was a hardware issue with the earpiece, doing this shouldn’t make a difference.”

Some users have found success in factory resetting their iPhones, and some are claiming that even after getting a replacement unit the problem persists, so hopefully if it is a software issue, Apple will issue an update that will address it soon.

Nexus 5X, 6P Security Updates Extended Until November 2018

Due to the growing number of devices in Google’s hardware portfolio, we guess it would be quite a monumental task if Google were to try and support every single one of them for years on end, which is why like with most manufacturers, Google usually offers a couple of years worth of support per device.

This is the case with the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P, but the good news is that if you own either handset, the folks at Droid-Life are reporting that Google has decided to extend the support of security updates for both handsets until November 2018. Prior to this Google had stated that security updates for both phones would end in September 2018, but for whatever reason Google has decided to add on a couple of extra months.

However given that both phones are known to have some pretty serious problems such as being stuck in bootloops or early shutdowns due to battery issues, we’re not sure if an extra 2 months of security updates will be enough to appease customers, but we guess for those who are lucky enough to not encounter any issues with their phone, this is good news, especially if you plan on holding onto the device through 2018.

Apple Details Which Third-Party Chargers Will Support Fast Charging

While Apple did not explicitly mention this feature during the iPhone 8 and iPhone X’s announcements, it was later discovered that both phones will support fast-charging, albeit with a caveat. This caveat came in the form of how only using specific chargers that users will be able to take advantage of the feature.

However the good news is that if you wanted clearer and more explicit information, the folks at MacRumors have recently stumbled across an Apple support document in which Apple details the chargers that users need for fast charging, as well as what to look out for if you are planning to use third-party chargers.

According to Apple with regards to third-party chargers, the company writes, “A comparable third-party USB-C power adapter that supports USB Power Delivery (USB-PD).” Ultimately it seems that a USB-C to Lightning cable is still required for fast charging, but at least with third-party chargers users can potentially save themselves some money compared to Apple’s more expensive accessories which range from $49 to $70 depending on the power output.

It isn’t quite as convenient compared to Android’s fast charging options, but we guess at least the option is there should users decide that they don’t mind spending a bit more money to get the required hardware.
