Apple Releases macOS High Sierra
Posted in: Today's Chili
Announced earlier this year at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference event, Apple today released the macOS High Sierra update to all compatible devices across the globe. Like previous updates before it, macOS High Sierra is available as a free download from the Mac App Store. Don’t expect a major redesign or anything as some of the biggest changes have been made under the hood.
Supported machines include all Macs from 2010 and later. There are some iMac and MacBook models from 2009 that are capable of upgrading to macOS High Sierra.
Apple chose to make some of the more significant changes under the hood. High Sierra has a new file system called Apple File System. It also brings support for more efficient photo and video standards, HEIF and HEVC respectively. The new video standard efficiently handles 4K video without taking up too much storage on the machine.
Other than that, there are some improvements that users will spot. This includes an improved Siri experience, new editing tools in the Photos app, changes in the way Safari handles autoplaying videos and ad tracking, and more.
Apple is now rolling out macOS High Sierra to compatible machines across the globe. You’ll soon receive an over-the-air update notification on your device informing you that a major software update is available.

It was reported recently that HP was thinking about ending sales of its Windows-powered productivity behemoth the Elite x3 in November this year. The report didn’t take many by surprise as there has been a general lack of interest from partners to build Windows 10 Mobile-powered devices. However, HP isn’t giving up on the Elite x3 just yet.
The report earlier today claimed that HP would stop selling this device from November 1st. The company was expected to keep supporting it until October 2018 so it would have supported it for two years after launch had HP been thinking about ending sales in November.
HP has confirmed that it’s not going to end sales of the Elite x3 in the near future. In a statement provided to Neowin, HP said that it’s planning to sell the Elite x3 “through 2019.”
“We remain committed to our mobility strategy and vision and will sell the Elite x3 through 2019 while continuing to enhance our portfolio delivering multi-OS devices, accessories and workflow transformation solutions,” a spokesperson for the company said.
Granted that it’s always possible for companies to change their decisions and HP has that option as well. At least it’s confirming that in the short term, it has no plans of ending sales of the Elite x3.

Apple previously relied on Bing to deliver web search results from Siri and Spotlight on iOS and Mac. However, the company today confirmed that it’s replacing Bing with Google for search results on iOS and Spotlight on Mac. Users will now get Google results instead of Bing if Siri falls back to a web search in response to a voice command.
Google is already the default search engine on Safari for Mac and iOS. That’s not entirely because Apple likes it. Google pays billions of dollars to be the default search engine on Safari. Apple’s main motivation for this change is to maintain consistency.
“Switching to Google as the web search provider for Siri, Search within iOS and Spotlight on Mac will allow these services to have a consistent web search experience with the default in Safari,” Apple said in a statement today, adding that it has strong relationships with both Google and Microsoft and that it remains committed to delivering the best user experience possible.
Apple’s timing for this switch is interesting. It has been made after iOS 11 was released several days ago and on the very same day that Apple is rolling out macOS High Sierra across the globe.
Despite this change, web image results from Siri will still be fetched from Bing for now. Whether or not this changes down the line remains to be seen.

We’ve been hearing reports recently that GoPro has a new action camera in the pipeline. Several leaks have revealed details about this new camera which will be called the GoPro Hero6 Black. The company today confirmed when it’s going to officially launch its new action camera. The GoPro Hero6 Black is going to be officially launched later this month at an event in San Francisco, California.
GoPro today sent emails to the press confirming that it’s going to conduct a launch event this coming Thursday, September 28th. The launch event will take place in San Francisco, California.
The invite doesn’t say which products we can expect to be announced at the event. However, there’s enough evidence now to support the theory that the GoPro Hero6 Black will finally be launched officially.
Reports suggest that the GoPro Hero6 Black will be capable of shooting 4K video at 60 frames-per-second. It may also be capable of recording 1080p video at 240 frames per second. It’s said to be twice as fast compared to its predecessor with better transfer speeds, improved image stabilization, and low light performance.
The camera is expected to cost $499. Reports suggest that it’s going to go on sale the very same day it’s unveiled to the world.
GoPro’s launch event is going to take place on September 28th. CEO Nick Woodman will open the proceedings at 9 am PST.

Amazon 4K Content Prices Cut

Apple recently launched its 4K compatible Apple TV set-top box. The company announced at the event that it was adding 4K content to the iTunes Store for the same price as HD content. It was also going to upgrade all previously purchased HD movies to 4K for free so that customers could stream them in gorgeous 4K HDR. It appears that Amazon has now responded to Apple’s move by cutting prices on the 4K content it offers through Amazon Video.
Amazon is expected to launch new 4K HDR compatible hardware as well. It stopped selling the Fire TV recently. There are rumors that new Amazon hardware is coming soon with support for 4K and HDR content.
Amazon Video’s 4K content library isn’t as broad as Apple’s. Prices usually started at $30 which made the 4K content quite expensive but they were comparable to services like Google.
However, Apple worked out favorable deals and is selling 4K HDR movies for prices starting at $19.99. Amazon Video has reportedly cut prices on 4K content over the weekend. Some 4K titles are now available for around $5 while newer titles cost between $7 to $19.
This competition works out in favor of the customers who now get to purchase 4K content from Amazon at lower prices. It’s unclear at this point in time when Amazon is planning to launch its new 4K compatible streaming hardware and how much it’s going to charge for it.
