Obama Warned Zuckerberg To Take Fake News Threat ‘Seriously’

There has been a lot of talk about whether or not the spread of fake news and disinformation on Facebook influenced the 2016 presidential election. It’s an idea that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has dismissed as being “crazy.” According to a new report, former President Barack Obama told Zuckerberg at one point in time to take the threat of fake news seriously.

The Washington Post reports that Obama pulled Zuckerberg aside and told him to take the threat of fake news and political disinformation seriously. Obama added that unless the government and Facebook did more to address this issue, it’s only likely going to get worse in the next presidential race.

According to the scribe, this conversation took place just nine days after Zuckerberg said that the idea of fake news on Facebook influencing the election was “crazy,” two months before Donald Trump was inaugurated as the new president.

Sources briefed on the private exchange between the two say that while Zuckerberg agreed that fake news posed problems, he told Obama and this wasn’t a widespread problem and that there wasn’t an easy fix for it. The conversation reportedly took place in a hotel room in Lima, Peru during a meeting of world leaders.

Facebook has made efforts to combat the spread of fake news on its platform. It also launched a campaign to help users spot fake news. Some say that it’s too little too late. Only time will tell if these measures will prevent something like this from ever happening again.

Instagram Monthly Users Cross 800 Million

Instagram is marching on its way to become a service that boasts one billion users. The Facebook-owned service today announced that it now has 800 million users across the globe. It has added another 100 million monthly users since April 2017. The figures were shared at an Advertising Week event in New York City by Carolyn Everson, vice president of global marketing solutions at Facebook.

Instagram has revealed that it has 500 million daily active users. It’s miles ahead of rival Snapchat as far as daily active users are concerned. Snap said last month that Snapchat has 173 million daily active users.

Instagram already has a user base that most services can only dream off but it doesn’t seem like growth is stagnating. On the contrary, growth seems to be accelerating, and it may not be long before Instagram reaches Facebook’s billion-plus numbers in the future.

The company also confirmed earlier today that the time spent watching video on Instagram is up more than 80 percent year-over-year, which shows that the features and improvements that it has made to its video offerings are paying dividends. Four times as many videos are being produced every day on Instagram compared to the same period just a year ago.

More advertisers are now willing to spend their dollars on Instagram. The company revealed that it has also doubled the number of advertisers on its platform since March, the advertiser base has surged to 2 million.

Apple Reportedly Exercising Caution With iPhone X Production

It was reported recently that the iPhone X final production had yet to begin. A new report today claims that Apple is being cautious with iPhone X production before pre-orders begin. It won’t start taking pre-orders for the iPhone X for over a month. It’s said to be very conservative with the production of its new flagship smartphone.

DigiTimes reports, citing sources based in Taiwan, that Apple’s suppliers are shipping parts and components for the iPhone X to Apple at about 40 percent of the quantities that they were originally anticipating. Despite the conservative production runs, some suppliers are still believed to be facing yield issues with their components.

“Apple is waiting to see the pre-sale orders of the iPhone X as well as the sales performance of the iPhone and iPhone 8 Plus,” the scribe mentions. If this report is to be believed, Apple is likely waiting for a response from the market before it starts producing the new handset in earnest. Apple reportedly applied the same tactic with the iPhone 7 last year so this won’t be out of the ordinary for Cupertino.

The iPhone X is expected to perform better than the iPhone 8. There are concerns that the former just might end up cannibalizing the latter’s sales. Pre-orders for the iPhone X won’t open before next month. Whether or not there will be any supply and demand gaps remains to be seen.
