Razer Core V2 makes for an instant gaming laptop

razer-core-v2When one talks about laptops, the general idea is this: laptops are not meant to function as a gaming machine, unless stated otherwise. The thing about gaming laptops is this, they tend to be rather bulky and are great power guzzlers due to the kind of powerful hardware packed underneath the hood. Razer decided that you can have the best of both worlds through the introduction of the Razer Core V2. The Razer Core V2 is able to transform highly mobile Thunderbolt 3 laptops into a portable, desktop-class gaming machine where all it requires would be a solitary Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) connection in order to hook up your existing laptop to this graphics enclosure.

Chances are, after you have hooked up the Razer Core V2 to your laptop, the bottleneck would no longer be in the video card department. Rather, it would most probably be the processor, hard drive, or even lack of memory that causes gaming performance to drop. We say this because the Razer Core V2 boasts of the world’s first dual Thunderbolt 3 internal controller design which will sport separate lanes for graphics and connected devices, delivering fluid gameplay. This external graphics enclosure will be accompanied by a quartet of USB 3.0 ports as well as Gigabit Ethernet in order to hook up a wide range of different peripherals.

Made from a block of durable raw aluminum, the chassis is CNC precision milled in order to deliver a very compact form factor. It comes with its own 500W power supply in order to deliver a right amount of power when it comes to graphics and connected devices, while extra cooling fans have been built into the design to help dispense heat quickly in order to achieve an optimal level of performance. It can fit an expanded range of taller graphics cards, including support for the NVIDIA GeForce 10 series and AMD Radeon 500 series with XConnect technology. The Razer Core V2 will retail for $499 apiece and is currently available for purchase.

Pixel 2 XL VS iPhone 8 Plus In Speed Test

With the Google Pixel 2 and the iPhone 8 having just been launched, we’re sure many are wondering which phone is “faster”. The good news is that you won’t have to wonder anymore because the folks at PhoneBuff have recently published a speed test comparison between both phones.

In terms of specs, the Pixel 2 XL is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset which is the latest flagship chipset for Qualcomm, while the iPhone 8 Plus is powered by the A11 Bionic chipset by Apple. Both chipsets are powerful in their own right, but in terms of speed, it looks like the iPhone 8 Plus has managed to beat out the Pixel 2 XL.

The iPhone 8 Plus completed its first lap in 1 minute and 18.26 seconds, while the Pixel 2 took 1 minute 25.23 seconds. The second lap which tested multitasking and memory management, the iPhone 8 Plus took 2 minutes and 5 seconds while the Pixel 2 XL took 2 minutes 10 seconds, allowing Google’s flagship to close the gap slightly, although they still lost. Interestingly enough there were some hiccups with the iPhone 8 Plus in the second round where certain apps were not kept in its RAM.

Previous iPhones did not have that problem so we have to wonder if it could have been a software issue that Apple could address in future iOS 11 updates. In any case if you want to check out the speed test, then watch the video above.

Mastercard & Saks Team Up For Augmented Reality Shopping Experience

There are many in the tech industry who believe that augmented reality is the way of the future and how we experience things. Apple’s CEO Tim Cook has long lauded the technology, and recently was quoted as saying that he believes one day in the future, no industry will be left untouched by AR technology.

It seems that Mastercard is in agreement because in an announcement by the company, they have teamed up with Saks, ODG, and Qualcomm to launch an AR shopping experience. “This new AR experience from Mastercard will not only let shoppers view digital representations of products before they commit to a purchase, but also learn more about what they are buying, see additional options not available in the physical location and get instant recommendations or other information relevant to their unique experience.”

According to Sherri Haymond, executive vice president, Digital Partnerships, Mastercard, “As the physical and digital worlds blend together, we are focused on developing solutions that provide merchants with the ability to accept payments across all technology platforms possible—in-store, in-app, online, and in AR and VR—to help drive how people will experience shopping and payments in the future.”

Mastercard is definitely not the first to embrace AR shopping as other companies such as IKEA have also launched similar initiatives of their own, where users can use AR to view furniture and place it in their homes to get an idea of how it will look like.

Apple Pay Launches In Sweden, Finland, Denmark, United Arab Emirates

If contactless payments is something you’re interested in, then you might be pleased to learn that Apple Pay has recently been launched in four new countries. This includes Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and the United Arab Emirates. This hardly covers the whole world but we expect that when there’s money and security involved, things tend to move a bit slower.

As is the case with Apple Pay launches in other parts of the world, the service will be tied to various local banks and also local retailers who will be supporting the payment system at launch. In Denmark, Apple Pay will work with Nordea and Jyse (the latter only support debit cards).

In Sweden and Finland, Apple Pay will be supported by Nordea as well along with ST1 bank. As for the United Arab Emirates, the banks supporting Apple Pay include Emirates Islamic, Emirates NBD, HSBC, mashreq, RAKBANK (Mastercard) and Standard Chartered Bank. We expect that over time more banks and financial institutions will lend their support, as well as retailers, so if you don’t see your favorite bank or retailer, perhaps it will come at a later date.

There are still plenty of countries in which Apple Pay has yet to be supported so if your country isn’t on the list, be patient and it should arrive in due time.

Google Lens Preview Rolling Out For 2016 Pixel Handsets

Searching for things using keywords has been pretty much the way it’s been done. However what if you wanted to search for something that you couldn’t really describe with words? That’s something that Google wanted to address when they announced Google Lens earlier this year, which is basically Google search except for images.

For those hearing about this for the first time, basically when combined with Google Assistant, users could point their cameras at objects and it will be recognized to identify objects or even to translate text, like menus or signboards when you’re traveling in a foreign country. Now according to reports posted on Reddit (via 9to5Google), it appears that the feature is now rolling out onto Google Photos for 2016’s Pixel handsets.

However before you get too excited, it should be noted that this rollout appears to be more of preview of the feature, meaning that it isn’t the full Google Lens feature yet. However from what we can tell, it will allow users to copy information like phone numbers, dates, and addresses, learn more about landmarks based on photos, as well as look up information on books, music albums, movies, artwork, and more.

The rollout seems to be for the 2016 Pixel phones, but it is expected to eventually find its way onto the Pixel 2 handsets and other Android devices in the near future.

Google Could Launch Three Pixel Handsets In 2018

According to the rumors from earlier this year, Google was said to have been preparing to launch three Pixel phones instead of two. However the rumors later said that Google had changed their mind and would launch two Pixel phones instead, which has since proven to be true with the launch of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.

That being said, it seems that the rumors of three Pixel phones just won’t seem to go away because according to new reports, it appears that could be the case for 2018. In a report from Droid-Life, they were tipped off by their source that Google is working on three devices for 2018 codenamed “crosshatch,” “albacore”, and “blueline”.

If you’re looking for more proof, it seems that references to these codenames were spotted in a comment to an AOSP listing which you can check out here. However whether or not this will materialize into actual devices remains to be seen, especially since we are this early into the rumors. It is possible that Google could simply be working on prototypes and that they might not necessarily go through with the final launch, so take it with a grain of salt for now.

It’s also a bit too early to tell what we might be able to expect from the Pixel 3 phones. It is possible that based on the current trend of near bezel-less phones that we could see a similar design next year, along with dual cameras, but like we said it’s too early to tell, but what do you guys think? What’s your wishlist for next year’s Pixel phones?
