Blizzard Gives Its Battle.net Launcher A Social Makeover

Blizzard’s Battle.net Launcher allows gamers to launch Blizzard games, check up on the latest Blizzard news, and access the Online Store. It also allows gamers to chat with their friends and see who’s online, although admittedly it isn’t the most robust chatting system available at the moment, or at least until now.

Blizzard has recently announced that they are giving its Battle.net Launcher a social makeover where the emphasis will be placed on introducing new social features, like a more robust chatting system. According to Blizzard, “We’re excited to introduce an array of new social features designed to give Blizzard players even more ways to stay connected inside our games and out—all available starting today in the Blizzard Battle.net desktop app.”

“The new Social tab includes the brand-new Blizzard Groups feature and hosts all of your chats, and player-to-player gifting gives you new ways to show your appreciation to your friends. We’ve also launched some new features that let you control how you appear to the Blizzard community, including profiles and avatars that let you customize your online persona, along with the ability to appear offline.”

The new changes should already be live so if you want to get a bit more social with your friends who are also playing Blizzard games, then this update could be worth checking out.

Google Implements ‘Book Online’ Button For Businesses

We’re sure many of you guys have tried searching for business online, such as restaurants, hotels, and so on, and for the most part Google does an excellent job of providing users with information such as ratings, reviews, a phone number, address, and etc. Now Google is making it easier for users to interact with business via a “Book Online” button.

As the name suggests, this is a button that allows users to book with businesses online, such as making an appointment. According to Google, “When potential customers search online for the ideal salon or the perfect gym class, they’re trying to decide which one is best for them. Booking buttons can help your business stand out from the crowd. People can book an appointment in under a minute directly through your listing—and you make it easy for them to become customers.”

Businesses will also be able to track the number of bookings that they get via the dashboard, so they know if the feature is working out for them. This can also cut through the noise where sometimes there are multiple listings in a search result on how to book a business like a hotel or restaurant, but this button should make it pretty clear cut, unless there’s another service that you might prefer using.

That being said, Google does point out that for now the feature is limited to fitness and beauty businesses, but they do plan on expanding the number of categories that it will eventually cover, as well as the countries it will be available in.

US Carriers Offering iPhone X Discounts Ahead Of Launch

Apple’s upcoming iPhone X will not come cheap, and as far as iPhone models are concerned, the iPhone X is the most expensive base iPhone model to date which starts at $999. So the question is, at those prices, who can afford such a device, or better yet, who would be willing to pay so much for it?

With many analysts predicting that the iPhone X will spur a new super cycle for Apple, it means that Apple certainly needs to move as many units as possible if they’re hoping to hit that goal, and the good news is that US carriers are helping to make that happen by announcing various discounts and deals for the phone.

For example Sprint has recently announced a deal that essentially offers customers savings of $350 on the iPhone X through the Sprint Flex hardware leasing program, although they will be required to trade-in a phone to be eligible for the deal. Verizon will also be offering customers up to $300 off the iPhone X also with a trade-in and will be limited to their Go Unlimited and Beyond Unlimited and new customers.

As for T-Mobile, they will be offering customers up to $300 off the iPhone X when purchased through the carrier’s monthly installment program, with the money actually being paid to customers upfront. So if you’re looking to get the iPhone X but don’t want to spend too much money on it, maybe these carrier plans could help you save a bit.

FBI Says Not Having Access To Encrypted Data Is A Huge Problem

By now many of you guys are probably aware that the FBI is trying to gain access to our devices legally. The agency’s argument is that there could be evidence and information on the phones belonging to suspects that could prove vital to solving crimes and preventing incidents, but because suspects are not obligated to unlock their devices, there’s no way of knowing.

The FBI has tried to get tech companies like Apple to unlock devices for them or create backdoors, which Apple has refused, and according to FBI director Christopher Wray, he claims that not having access to such data is a huge, huge problem and impacts the investigation of various crimes.

According to Wray, “To put it mildly, this is a huge, huge problem. It impacts investigations across the board — narcotics, human trafficking, counterterrorism, counterintelligence, gangs, organized crime, child exploitation.” He also revealed that the agency has had trouble access data on close to 7,000 devices in the last 11 months.

Wray adds that he believes that there needs to be some kind of balance between public safety and encryption, but whether or not tech companies or the public feels the same way is a different story. “I get it, there’s a balance that needs to be struck between encryption and the importance of giving us the tools we need to keep the public safe. The threats that we face keep accumulating, they are complex, they are varied.”
