Tesla reportedly lands deal to build an EV factory in Shanghai

It’s difficult for foreign car makers to crack the Chinese market. Unless they’re willing to partner with a local brand (and thus give up both profits and technology), they have to pay for shipping vehicles and swallow a 25 percent import duty fee. T…

Microsoft Delays LTE Surface Pro Release To 2018

Microsoft didn’t really confirm when it’s going to release the LTE Surface Pro. As one can imagine, there are a lot of customers that are waiting for the LTE-enabled version of this device to arrive. It was recently reported that the LTE Surface Pro release will finally take place on December 1st. According to a new report, that might not happen now before 2018.

The Surface Pro was unveiled by Microsoft earlier this year at its hardware event in Shanghai. The company did say at that time that a cellular variant of the Surface Pro would be released in the future, though it didn’t specify when the LTE Surface Pro release would take place.

Microsoft has quietly updated the FAQ section of its online store listing for the Surface Pro. The updated section mentions that the LTE Surface Pro 4 release won’t take place until spring 2018.

The company did have a working version of the LTE Surface Pro at its Ignite 2017 conference last month. Lots of people got to see it, hence the impression that the LTE-enabled variant of this device was ready for release.

Microsoft hasn’t provided a reason for this delay. The vague release time frame isn’t going to make the wait any easier for those who have been thinking about getting a Surface Pro with cellular connectivity. Looks like they’ll have to keep waiting for a couple of months now.

OnePlus 5T Leaked Render Hints At Bezel-Less Display

Ever since the OnePlus 5 went out of stock, there were rumors that perhaps the company is going to release a new handset soon. OnePlus did launch the OnePlus 3T around the same time last year so naturally, the rumors have been about a OnePlus 5T. The company itself has said nothing so far to suggest that it’s working on such a device. A new OnePlus 5T leaked render suggests that the handset will jump on the bezel-less bandwagon as well.

The flagship smartphones this year have set a trend with their bezel-less smartphones. The OnePlus 5T leaked render suggests that it’s also going to move to the 18:9 aspect ratio for the display. This means that the device will have more of a bezel-less look even though it won’t probably stretch the bezel’s limits as much as the Galaxy S8 does, for example.

The fingerprint sensor would have to be relocated because of this and if the render is anything to go by, it’s going to be relocated to the back. The OnePlus 5T is apparently going to have a dual camera at the back, just like the existing OnePlus 5 handset, so that’s not going to come as a surprise.

Whether or not this device is actually in the pipeline remains to be seen. There hasn’t been much to go on except circumstantial evidence so the situation won’t really be clear until next month when OnePlus is expected to unveil a new smartphone.

Tesla Building Electric Car Factory In China

There have been reports that Tesla is thinking about setting up a manufacturing facility in China and if a new report is to be believed, Tesla has finally signed off on a deal to build an electric car manufacturing plant in Shanghai. According to the report, this is a “first of its kind” deal in which a foreign car manufacturer has been allowed to own a plant in Shanghai’s free trade zone.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Tesla has signed off on a deal to set up a manufacturing facility in Shanghai, China. The report does mention that there are many details that have yet to be negotiated. However, this deal does get Tesla a foot in the door as China is predicted to become one of the world’s largest markets for electric cars in the coming years.

It’s not like Tesla is the only electric car company that’s thinking about the future of electric cars in China. Big names such as Volkswagen, Ford, and Renault-Nissan are all trying to get a piece of the pie through joint ventures.

Setting up a plant in China will not only help Tesla establish a footing in the country’s market, but it will also enable the company to expand further in the region by using its Shanghai plant as a base to export from.

Samsung Set To Rival Apple’s Regent Street Location In London

Apple’s retail stores across the globe are known for their impressive design. The company’s flagship stores in some of the biggest cities on the planet are often even regarded as a must-see destination for tourists in the city. Apple’s location at Regent Street in London is one of those flagship stores. According to a new report, Samsung is planning to open a similarly grand location of its own in the UK’s capital.

Bloomberg reports that Samsung is going to lease the 20,000 square foot top floor of the Coal Drops Yard mall in King’s Cross. The mall is still being developed and is going to be opened in October 2018, so Samsung’s location won’t be open before then as well.

The site itself used to be a coal store back in Victorian times. The design upgrade is going to transport the former coal store into possibly one of the best shopping destinations in London.

Samsung’s new location is not likely going to be a retail store. It’s reportedly going to be a place that’s filled with ideas, experiences, and Samsung’s devices. In other words, it will be similar to Samsung’s existing showroom of a similar nature in New York’s Meatpacking district.

Samsung hasn’t confirmed or denied this report about its Coal Drops Yard location so there’s nothing to share about this from the company so far.
