Nintendo Switch Gets Support For Wireless USB Headphones

Nintendo released firmware version 4.0 for its Switch console earlier this week. The update brought a couple of new features for the console in addition to overall tweaks and improvements. It has now been discovered that the latest firmware update for the Nintendo Switch has also brought support for wireless USB headphones to the console.

The Switch’s latest update has also brought new profile icons based on Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Gamers can now transfer user profiles and save data to another system after they’ve updated the console.

Nintendo didn’t really say much about this addition but users on Reddit have discovered that this update brings support for wireless USB headphones and other USB devices. Users just have to plug the device’s dongle into the Switch dock and they’re good to go. There’s even a new volume slider that can be used when the headphones are plugged in.

The only caveat is that this is only going to work when the Switch is placed inside its dock. You can’t take advantage of this if you’re using the Switch in handheld mode. There is a workaround, though, and it involves plugging the receiver into a USB-Type C adapter. It’s not what the company would have intended but at least it gets the job done.

iPhone Upgrade Program Members Offered ‘Head Start’ On iPhone X Upgrade

Pre-orders for Apple’s new flagship smartphone will finally be live later this month. Apple is going to start taking pre-orders for the iPhone starting October 27th. The company is offering a “head start” to those who are already members of its iPhone Upgrade Program. Apple says that they will be able to speed through checkout on October 27th if they have decided to upgrade to the iPhone X.

The iPhone X is expected to be sold out shortly after pre-orders go live. That’s because it’s believed that the handset will be in limited supply at launch. The supply issues aren’t expected to be resolved well into the first quarter of next year, according to some reports.

Apple is informing iPhone Upgrade Program members that they can “get a head start on your upgrade to iPhone X” starting October 23rd. “Use the Apple Store app on your iPhone to get ready for pre-order so you can speed through checkout on 10.27,” it tells them.

They aren’t been guaranteed launch day inventory. The process is just going to help members complete the loan eligibility process via Apple before the pre-orders are officially opened. This is just going to eliminate the few steps for iPhone Upgrade Program members on October 27th.

They will thus be able to complete the transaction in the shortest time possible. Whether or not they will be able to secure a unit for delivery on the release date is another matter entirely.

‘Hey Google’ Command For Google Assistant Rolling Out To Smartphones

You can already use the “OK Google” command to fire up the Google Assistant on your compatible Android smartphone. The “Hey Google” command wasn’t supported on smartphones as it was only used for Assistant-powered hardware like the Google Home smart speaker. That changes today, though. Google is now rolling out support for the Hey Google keyword for smartphones.

When support for the Hey Google command for Google Assistant lands on users’ devices, they will receive a notification informing them that this command is now supported. Users can then train their handset to listen for both the OK Google and Hey Google commands in response to which it will launch Google’s AI-powered digital personal assistant.

It’s a minor change but one that’s likely going to make life easier for those who tend to rely a lot on Google Assistant. This will be particularly helpful for them if they’ve grown accustomed to saying Hey Google to bring up Assitant on the Google Home. They no longer have to switch between two separate commands for essentially them same result on smartphones and Google Home units.

Those who’ve not yet received the update notification can head over to the Google Play Store and check if an update is available for the Google App. If it is, they just need to update the app in order to get support for this command.

Huawei Watch 2 Pro Launched With eSIM Support

The Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro were announced by the company in China over the weekend but the new handsets aren’t the only hardware that it has unveiled. Something that flew under the radar completely for the past couple of weeks has also been unveiled. Huawei has launched the new Watch 2 Pro in China. This smartwatch comes with eSIM support. This was a surprising announcement, given that Huawei didn’t talk about a new smartwatch at the international launch event in Munich.

There isn’t a lot of information available about the specifications of this smartwatch right now, however, reports reveal that it features a heart rate monitor, an onboard GPS, and NFC support for mobile payments with Huawei Pay. The defining feature is that this smartwatch has 4G/3G/2G support for its eSIM.

It’s also unclear what operating system this smartwatch is running, given that Google doesn’t officially have a presence in the country. The user interface is similar to that of Android Wear but it may not have any Google services.

It’s likely that Huawei will keep this smartwatch a China-exclusive. The company itself hasn’t said anything that would suggest that a global launch is on the cards for the Watch 2 Pro with eSIM.

Huawei has already started selling the Watch 2 Pro in China for nearly $400. While this smartwatch may not make it out of China, it does suggest that future smartwatches from Huawei that see a global release may very well feature eSIM support.
