Facebook’s ‘Explore Feed’ Feature Is Now Rolling Out To Users

Facebook definitely wants to be more than just a place where you connect with your friends and family. We’ve seen the company explore various new features and services, and earlier this year there was a report that Facebook was testing out a new “Explore Feed” feature which as its name suggests, lets users find new posts that Facebook thinks they might be interested in.

At that time it was unclear as to how widespread the testing was, but in a report from TechCrunch, Facebook has confirmed to the publication that they have started to roll out the feature to its users. You will be able to find the Explore Feed feature also on the desktop version of Facebook at the side where it’s called “Explore Feed”.

Like we said, the feature basically lets users discover posts that they might be interested in, similar to the Explore tab on Instagram that shows users posts based on posts that they might have liked in the past, and also based on the people that they follow. So if you’re bored and you’re looking for new content, then the Explore Feed feature could be worth checking out. If you don’t see it on your Facebook yet, not to worry as it should eventually be enabled for you.

3 Million iPhone X Units Expected To Be Available At Launch

If you’re hoping to get your hands on the iPhone X come 3rd of November, you might have heard reports that Apple is facing some supply issues and that there might not be many units available at the start. This seems to be further reinforced by analyst firm KGI Securities who indicates that Apple will have about 3 million iPhone X units at launch.

This seems to be in line with previous reports that indicate that the iPhone X will be hard to get on launch day for those who don’t move quickly. It is unclear as to what is causing the production issues because there have been multiple reports suggesting all sorts of things, like the TrueDepth cameras, the OLED display, the metal frame for the phone, and so on.

More recently analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested that one of the “biggest hurdles” for the iPhone X is the flexible printed circuit board for the antenna system. Apparently special materials, processes, and stringent tests are required for Apple to sign off on it, which could explain why production is taking longer than normal.

However the semi-good news is that according to Kuo, these issues are expected to be improved upon drastically across November, which means that Apple should be able to ramp up production after that. Either way we’ll have to wait and see how this one plays out, but if you’re thinking about getting the iPhone X, you definitely want to pre-order it when it becomes available.

Google Launches Bug Bounty Program For Third-Party Android Apps

Bug bounty programs aren’t new and usually most companies have something similar in place where rewards are offered to users, developers, and/or hackers who discover a bug or a security flaw in their services or software. The amount will range depending on the severity of the bug found.

However this is clearly not something that small time companies or lone developers might be able to afford, which means that there could be plenty of apps out there that have security flaws and vulnerabilities that have yet to be discovered, and could be taken advantage of. However the good news for these app developers is that Google wants to help with its Google Play Security Reward Program.

According to Google, “Google Play is working with the independent bug bounty platform, HackerOne, and the developers of popular Android apps to implement the Google Play Security Reward Program. Developers of popular Android apps are invited to opt-in to the program, which will incentivize security research in a bug bounty model. The goal of the program is to further improve app security which will benefit developers, Android users, and the entire Google Play ecosystem.”

Basically Google will be paying out the bounty for vulnerabilities that are discovered. However right now it seems that not all apps will automatically qualify to be part of this program. Right now it seems that only select developers have been chosen, but presumably at a later date more apps will be added.

Tim Cook Questioned Over Apple’s Removal Of VPN Apps In China

Different countries have different rules and regulations, so what might be legal and allowed in one country might not be in another country. Take for example VPN apps which used to be widely available in the iTunes App Store in China, but in recent times have been removed following China’s new law that requires such apps to be approved by the government first.

It seems that Apple was pretty much just conforming to the rules in one of the countries that they operate in, but US Senators Ted Cruz and Patrick Leahy do not seem to be too thrilled by it, and have recently questioned Apple’s CEO Tim Cook over the removal of the apps. In an open letter to Cook, it suggests that Apple could be “enabling” China’s censorship of the internet.

The letter reads in part, “VPNs allow users to access the uncensored Internet in China and other countries that restrict Internet freedom. If these reports are true, we are concerned that Apple may be enabling the Chinese government’s censorship and surveillance of the Internet.” Cook and Apple had previously responded to the controversy back in August, but it is unclear if Cruz and Leahy are aware of his statement.

Cook’s statement back then reads, “We would obviously rather not remove the apps, but like we do in other countries we follow the law wherever we do business. And we strongly believe that participating in markets and bringing benefits to customers is in the best interest of the folks there and in other countries as well. So we believe in engaging with governments even when we disagree.”

Sprint, T-Mobile Merger Might Only Be Announced In November

As you might have heard, Sprint and T-Mobile are apparently working towards merging together. It was previously reported that the merger, or at least plans for the merger, could be announced later this month. However according to a report from Bloomberg, it seems that the merger’s announcement could be delayed to November.

According to the report, the reason both companies have been working towards announcing the merger this month is so that it can be done in time for their earnings announcement, but apparently there is a chance it could be delayed to 2-3 weeks after the earnings announcement, meaning that the merger announcement might take place in November instead.

So far neither carrier has confirmed their plans to merge, but it has been openly discussed in the past, with execs on either side expressing their interest. This is actually not the first time that both carriers have tried to merge, but previously regulators had opposed the idea, so it is unclear as to what could change this time to allow the deal to go through.

T-Mobile’s parent company Deutsche Telekom has in the past tried to sell off their US operations. At one point AT&T and T-Mobile came pretty close to finalizing a deal several years ago, but once again regulators opposed the deal and it fell apart.
