Google Pixel 2 is a mixed bag of durability

We just recently got a peek into the Pixel 2 and learned from iFixit how easy, or not, it was to open up and repair. But before repair comes the damage that causes the need to repair. Rogers CEO Says iPhone 8 Demand Has Been ‘Anemic’

There have been multiple reports to suggest that Apple’s iPhone 8 isn’t doing as well as its predecessors, and recently Canadian carrier Rogers seems to agree with that assessment. According to the carrier’s CEO Joe Natale, he claims that demand for the iPhone 8 has been “anemic”.

At this moment in time it is unclear as to how many iPhone 8 units Apple has sold and we’ll probably have to wait for the company’s financials to get an idea, but so far it certainly doesn’t sound too good. In fact recent reports have suggested that Apple could be looking to slash production of the iPhone 8 by as much as half.

Earlier reports are also claiming that the iPhone 7 is actually outselling the iPhone 8 in the US. That being said, this isn’t necessarily all doom and gloom for Apple. Some are saying that the reason could be that customers are waiting to see what the iPhone X can bring to the table and if it lives up to the hype before deciding if they’d rather get the iPhone 8 or iPhone X.

Others are claiming that customers are instead holding out for the iPhone X, which explains why many are passing on the iPhone 8. Despite what seems to be mostly negativity, there are some who have dismissed claims of weak iPhone 8 sales, but either way like we said, we’ll have to wait for Apple’s financials to get a better idea.

Alleged iMac Pro Benchmarks Are Pretty Impressive

Earlier this year with many wondering about the fate of the Mac Pro and Apple’s commitment to the “pro” user, Apple responded by launching the iMac Pro. This is basically an iMac but with some pretty impressive hardware specs that are aimed towards pro users who might need a powerful computer but in a slimmer package.

So how powerful are we talking about? In a report from MacRumors, it seems that the iMac Pro has recently been spotted on Geekbench packing custom Intel Xeon processors, and based on the results, it seems that Apple’s claim that the iMac Pro will be their most powerful Mac yet could be true. Based on the results, we’re looking at a single-core score of 5,345, and a multi-core score of 35,917.

Note that this particular model is the 10-core iMac Pro model, which means that the 18-core iMac Pro has yet to be benchmarked, and we have to wonder how it will score then. The new iMac Pro from Apple is expected to begin shipping this coming December where it will be priced starting at $4,999.

However a report from earlier this year suggested that if you were to fully spec out the iMac Pro, one could be looking at a whopping price tag of $17,000, yikes!

BBC To Use Artificial Intelligence To Improve Its Programming

So what makes a television program or a movie successful? Or rather how do studios determine whether or not a brand new movie or TV show idea is worth investing in? There are many factors that are taken into consideration, but it seems over at the BBC, they are looking to use AI to help improve on their programming.

This new initiative announced by BBC Research and Development will be undertaken in collaboration with eight UK universities, where they will take advantage of AI to better understand what audiences want, why they want it, and what kind of impact such shows might have on them. It will also help to create a more customized a personalized watching experience.

According to Matthew Postgate, the BBC’s Chief Technology and Product Officer, “The BBC has always been at its best when it combines creativity with technology. As we reinvent the BBC, we can see the opportunities that data and machine learning are opening up for us, our creative talent and our audiences. This partnership will help us break new ground and ensure we continue giving audiences the very best in public service broadcasting well into the future.”

As it stands video platforms like YouTube and Netflix can sort of determine what kind of videos you might enjoy based on things that you have previously watched, so we guess seeing the BBC apply AI to their programming to improve on their content doesn’t really seem like that much of a stretch.

The UK Could Force Petrol Stations To Install EV Chargers

The range on electric vehicles these days have definitely come a long way from what they used to be back in the day. However for the most part it’s hard to beat a gas-powered car in terms of range, and also in terms of how quick and easy it is to refuel a gas car compared to an electric car.

While many companies are beginning to roll out more EV chargers, over in the UK there are plans that could potentially force petrol stations to install EV chargers. Given how ubiquitous petrol stations are, at least compared to EV chargers, it means that EV car owners should have no problems finding a place to recharge their cars.

This is part of the Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill that was announced during the Queen’s Speech earlier this year, but had its first reading by Transport Minister John Hayes. The bill will also require that all UK motorway services and large petrol retailers will need to be on board, and that the government will be given powers to “make it compulsory for chargepoints to be installed across the country.”

According to Hayes, “We want the UK to be the best place in the world to do business and a leading hub for modern transport technology, which is why we are introducing the Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill in Parliament and investing more than £1.2 billion in the industry. This bill will aid the construction of greater infrastructure to support the growing demand for automated and electric vehicles as we embrace this technology and move into the future.”

Ultimate Ears BLAST & MEGABLAST Alexa-Powered Speakers Announced

If there is one reason Amazon’s Alexa has made so much headway compared to the competition from the likes of Apple or Google, it is because pretty much right from the start, Amazon made Alexa open to third-party developers and manufacturers, thus allowing many to take advantage of Alexa’s features from the get-go.

In fact if you’re looking for more Alexa-powered speakers, you’ll be interested to learn that Ultimate Ears has announced two new portable Bluetooth speakers that feature Alexa integration. This comes in the form of the Ultimate Ears BLAST and MEGABLAST speakers which are actually not the first Ultimate Ears speakers to feature Alexa support.

In terms of features, both speakers appear to be more or less similar as they will both feature WiFi connectivity and will allow users to take calls on the speaker. They are also waterproof up to depths of 3 feet for up to 30 minutes, and will feature 12 hours of battery life for the BLAST and 16 hours for the MEGABLAST.

The difference would be in their size and sound, and according to the press release, “With a maximum sound pressure level of 93 dBC, MEGABLAST is the loudest speaker from Ultimate Ears and is 40 percent louder than Ultimate Ears MEGABOOM.” In terms of pricing, the BLAST will be priced at $229 while the MEGABLAST will retail for $299.
