Essential Phone Update Gives It Fingerprint Sensor Gestures

Given that a lot of our phones these days seem to pack similar hardware specs, one of the ways to differentiate phones from each other would be in terms of features, whether it be software or hardware. The good news for Essential Phone owners is that it looks like the company has recently pushed out an update that will introduce fingerprint gestures.

Note that fingerprint gestures aren’t exactly new and have been introduced in other handsets in the past, like with the Pixel and Pixel 2 phones from Google. For those unfamiliar, basically what this does is that by swiping down on the sensor, it will allow users to reveal the notification shade, and swiping up will dismiss them.

It’s not a groundbreaking feature but it is a convenient feature and one that should help users save some time. In addition to the gesture, the update will also pack the KRACK vulnerability that was pretty big news a couple of weeks ago. Many companies have since patched the issue, so it’s good to see Essential get on board in a relatively short amount of time.

The update sports the build number NMJ20D and weighs 74.8MB, and given that it patches a pretty big security flaw, it is highly recommended that you update your device.

Super Mario Odyssey Has Sold 2 Million Copies In 3 Days

With every Nintendo console release, it is expected that the company will introduce new games based on existing franchises, for example how we’ve gotten so many variations of Mario Kart by now. This is also why seeing Nintendo announce Super Mario Odyssey as a Mario title for the Switch did not come as a surprise either.

However what’s surprising is how well-received the title is. According to Nintendo’s latest financial report (via GameSpot), it has been revealed that Super Mario Odyssey has managed to sell 2 million copies. This is a massive feat by Nintendo especially when you consider that it has only been about 3 days or so since the game was released!

Prior to this Nintendo had announced that the Switch had sold 7.6 million units worldwide, with the top-selling game for the Switch being The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild which managed 4.7 million titles to date, followed by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at 4.42 million. With Super Mario Odyssey coming in at 2 million right out of the gate, it has displaced the likes of both 1-2-Switch and ARMS, both of which managed a little under 1.5 million units sold each.

According to Nintendo, “We will endeavor to further increase the number of consumers who want to purchase Super Mario Odyssey, and eventually we would like the game to be seen as an evergreen title that has longevity in the market beyond this holiday season.”

Nintendo: Over 300 Software Publishers Developing For The Switch

The difference in success of how the Nintendo Switch is doing compared to the Wii U is like night and day. In fact it seems that at the rate the Switch is selling, Nintendo had previously expressed their belief that the Switch could easily outsell the Wii U’s lifetime sales within a year, a figure that took the Wii U about 5 years to hit.

In fact Nintendo seems to be particularly upbeat about the Switch, and we guess rightfully so. During the company’s recent earnings call, Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima revealed that the Switch currently has over 300 software publishers who are developing titles for the console. He also revealed that the company had a ton of games in the works, ranging from titles aimed at children, families, men and women, and varying age groups.

Kimishima was quoted as saying, “This is just some of the lineup that has been announced. As you can see, the wide variety of genres among the titles will further increase interest for Nintendo Switch. Having a broader consumer base will make it even easier for software publishers to do business. We are also continuing our work to establish a collaborative framework that facilitates the creation of more successful titles for our software publisher partners.”

That being said, the Switch has managed to attract some pretty surprising titles, at least titles no one would have really expected to arrive on a Nintendo console. For example Bethesda will be bringing titles like Skyrim, DOOM, and Wolfenstein II onto the platform. Recently it was also confirmed that Rocket League will be officially launching on the Switch come 14th of November.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain PS4 Pro Patch Releases Tomorrow

Sony’s PS4 Pro represents the company’s attempt at an upgrade over the current PS4 console. It is supposed to be more powerful than its predecessor, which means that it should be able to run games at a higher quality than before. For gamers looking to take advantage of this, Konami has recently announced a release date for the PS4 Pro for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

The announcement was posted on the company’s Twitter page during the Paris Games Show and according to Konami, the patch is expected to be released tomorrow. Unfortunately details as to what the patch will bring to the table is unclear, but presumably it will update the game to allow it to better take advantage of the PS4 Pro’s power and graphics, which should result in The Phantom Pain looking even more amazing than it already does.

It has been pointed out that The Phantom Pain is currently a free download as one of October’s PlayStation Plus games, so you’ll definitely want to check it out while it is still free if you’re curious about the game and the upcoming patch. The game was originally released back in 2015 and it is essentially the last game at Konami that Hideo Kojima was working on.

Konami still has plans for the Metal Gear franchise and has recently confirmed that Metal Gear Survive, the latest title in the franchise, is expected to see a February 2018 release.

DotA 2’s ‘The Dueling Fates’ Update Introduces Two New Heroes

With long-running games like League of Legends and DotA 2, eventually things will start to get a bit “boring” because after a while, players will get used to characters, the maps, and abilities. This is why developers usually introduce new maps, modes, and heroes every now and then. Now if you’ve felt that DotA 2 has been getting a bit long in the tooth, fret not.

Valve has recently announced that the latest update to the game dubbed “The Dueling Fates” is now live. This is a new update to DotA 2 that will introduce a bunch of changes to the game, although we guess the key highlight of this particular patch is the fact that it will be introducing two new heroes in the form of Dark Willow and Pangolier (pictured above).

According to Valve, “Eager to dash into danger at a moment’s notice, the Pangolier thrives on disrupting enemy movements and placing himself in the midst of chaos. Artfully guiding his blade between cracks in armor and shrugging off attacks with his protective scales, this graceful swordsman is always ready to roll into battle.”

As for Dark Willow, “A slight flutter from the shadows may be all an enemy sees of Dark Willow, as she eludes pursuit and controls her foe’s movements with cunning fae tricks. Calling upon powers far more ancient than any scholarly magic, she binds enemies in place before unleashing the full wrath and terror of the fae realm upon them.”

However like we said, the patch does more than add new heroes to the game. The patch also introduces new ranked seasons for MMR, a new game mode, and Valve has also announced that they will be reworking the Battle Pass system. More information regarding the update can be found on the DotA 2 website.

Researchers Develop AI That Can Detect Bowel Cancer In Under A Second

The idea of going in for a medical test can be a bit daunting and scary because you’re not sure what they could find. Could it be good news? Bad news? We suppose part of the reason it is scary is simply because you do not know and the wait for your results can be agonizing. However researchers over in Japan are working to solve that with the use of AI.

The researchers have managed to develop software that seems to be capable of detecting bowel cancer in less than a second or so they claim. During their trials, the AI appeared to be successful at being able to spot colorectal adenomas, which are basically benign tumors that have the potential to evolve into cancer, from magnified endoscopic images.

The system was trained by matching these images against 30,000 others during the machine learning process, thus allowing it to quickly identify what could be cancer and what might not. Presenting the results at the United European Gastroenterology Week in Barcelona, Spain, study leader Dr Yuichi Mori from Showa University in Yokohama believes that this could save patients from having needless surgery.

Mori was quoted as saying, “This allows the complete resection of adenomatous (cancerous) polyps and prevents unnecessary polypectomy (removal) of non-neoplastic polyps.” However as it stands the system has yet to be approved by the country’s regulators, but Mori believes that the results make it acceptable for clinic application.
