Nikon Shutters Factory In China, Blames Smartphones

Do our smartphones have the potential to replace dedicated cameras? Perhaps when it comes to day-to-day photos, or if you want a quick snap of something, our smartphone cameras are more than capable of getting the job done. In fact we’ve seen many instances in which smartphone cameras can snap some really amazing photographs.

Unfortunately for some camera makers, it seems that this has had a negative effect on their business, such as Nikon who recently announced (via PetaPixel) that they will be shutting down its digital camera factory over in China in the Jiangsu province. According to Nikon, it seems that the rise of smartphones are to blame for the closure, which has impacted the demand for compact digital cameras.

According to Nikon, “In recent years […] due to the rise of smartphones, the compact digital camera market has been shrinking rapidly, leading to a significant decrease in operating rate at [Nikon Imaging (China)] and creating a difficult business environment.” Note that shutting down this plant does not mean that Nikon is in trouble.

The company’s DSLRs are still performing extremely well (difficulty in obtaining the recently launched D850 should speak volumes) and they also do have other factories in other parts of the world, but like we said, given that it is much more convenient to bring about your phone than an extra additional camera, negatively impacting the lower-end side of the camera business doesn’t really come as much of a surprise.

Microsoft Rolling Out New Skype For The Desktop

Skype has been one of Microsoft’s longest-running communications app, and over the years it is only natural to see it evolve and change with improvements to usability, new features, and more.  That being said, Microsoft is back with yet another revamp of Skype and the latest version of the app is now available.

According to Microsoft, “With the new Skype, you can get more done on your PC. We know that changing devices interrupts your flow—no one wants to switch from their computer to their phone just to have a better conversation experience. Now you can send and receive Skype messages in real-time, answer calls directly from your PC, and share your screen to present your latest ideas to colleagues.”

Other new features that Microsoft will be introducing to the latest version of Skype includes the ability to add customizable themes, better managed chat lists, cross-device functionality, and it will also be cloud-based. There have also been changes made to video calls, such as the ability to react to messages, @mentions, and there will also be bots and Microsoft will be bringing back status updates.

The update is rolling out to users as we speak, but users who would rather pull the update manually can get the latest version of Skype via its website.

iOS 11.2 Will Address The Calculator Bug

Most of us probably take apps like the alarm, timer, and calculator on our phones for granted. This is because such apps are pretty simple and straightforward to use that it’s hard to imagine them not working as intended, but unfortunately that was not the case for the Calculator app found in iOS 11.

However the good news is that Apple is aware of the issue and in the recently released iOS 11.2 beta for developers, it appears that Apple has addressed it. For those unfamiliar with the bug, basically it had nothing to do with how the app calculates numbers, but rather with the animation used in the app that caused it to misread entries when the numbers and symbols were pressed too quickly.

For example rapidly typing in 1+2+3 should result in 6, but what some users were getting was 24, which is obviously wrong. In iOS 11.2, Apple has removed the animations from the calculator app which means that users will now be able to rapidly enter numbers and have it register correctly.

Of course this means that users will need to wait for iOS 11.2 to be released, which at this point in time is unclear when that might be, especially since iOS 11.1 has yet to be released either. In the meantime users can always turn to third-party calculator apps, or perhaps slow down their entries to prevent any mistakes.
