ZTE Axon M Folding Smartphone Officially Launched

There had been a lot of rumors over the past couple of months about a new smartphone from ZTE. The company was reportedly working on a foldable smartphone called the Axon M and that’s precisely what it has officially announced today. ZTE’s much-rumored foldable smartphone is now official. As expected, it’s going to be an AT&T-exclusive in the United States.

The ZTE Axon M has dual 5.2 inch 1920×1080 TFT LCD displays that can be folded out to achieve a high 426 PPI. The implementation isn’t very seamless as there’s a visible gap between the two displays. Nevertheless, the narrow bezels help bring the two together to an extent.

There’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor under the hood with 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage. The handset also features a 20 megapixel rear camera, Android 7.1.2 Nougat, a 3,180mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support.

ZTE says that the Axon M can be used in four different modes, namely Dual Mode, Extended Mode, Mirror Mode, and Traditional Mode. In Dual Mode, users will be able to have separate apps open on each display while Extended Mode will allow them to span both displays. The Mirror Mode will place the same content on both displays while the Traditional Mode will only use one display.

AT&T customers will be able to purchase the ZTE Axon M for $24.17 for 30 months starting in November. Pricing and availability information for markets like China, Japan, and Europe will be confirmed later.

Fossil Launches Its Smallest Hybrid Smartwatches Yet

Fossil today announced the launch of the Q Neely and Q Jacqueline, the company says that these are the smallest hybrid smartwatches that it has ever released. Geared towards female customers, the latest additions to Fossil’s Q lineup fuse new functionality with a classically design watch profile of Fossil’s best-selling styles.

Featuring an understated design, the new smartwatches have a 36mm case which is the most popular size for women’s watches. There will be countless options for personalization which include interchangeable straps in silicone, leather, and stainless steel.

A hybrid smartwatch is called hybrid because it doesn’t have the features that you’d expect from a modern smartwatch, but it does offer enough features to justify the smart tag.

The Fossil Q Neely and Q Jacqueline bring together an analog watch design with smart connectivity. Users can get smartphone notifications, track fitness goals, compare time in multiple time zones, and customize the pushers to operate a smartphone camera or ring their phone.

The smartwatches are capable of doing all this while offering a no-charge battery life of up to six months. Fossil’s new hybrid smartwatches are compatible with Android devices running version 5.0 and up as well as the iPhone 5/iOS 9.0+.

The Fossil Q Neely and Q Jacqueline will be available in Fossil stores and online starting October 22nd priced from $155 to $175.

GM Will Be First To Test Self-Driving Cars In New York City

New York has some strict rules for self-driving cars which is why companies haven’t been rushing there to test their technology. General Motors has seen past that, though, and it’s going to be the first company to start testing autonomous vehicles in New York City. General Motors’ self-driving unit Cruise Automation will begin testing its autonomous Chevy Bolts in the city. GM will thus be the first company to test Level 4 autonomous cars on public roads.

The law that allows testing of self-driving cars in New York lapses on April 1st, 2018 so these tests have to been conducted by then. Moreover, a police escort is also mandatory for each self-driving car and the company will be the one paying for it.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office sent out a press release confirming this agreement with Cruise Automation. As part of this deal, Cruise Automation will be allowed to map a geofenced area in Manhattan where it will be able to test the cars.

“Autonomous vehicles have the potential to save time and save lives, and we are proud to be working with GM and Cruise on the future of this exciting new technology,” the governor said.

During testing, there’s going to be an engineer in the driver’s seat to keep an eye on things. There’s also going to be another person in the passenger seat. Cruise will also have to open an office in New York City and hire employees for a new team.

Netflix To Spend $8 Billion On Original Content In 2018

Netflix has significantly increased its spending on original content. It’s evidently what’s driving subscriber growth for the online streaming service. Netflix aims to make its original content account for the majority of content available on its service. To achieve that aim, it’s going to spend over $8 billion in order make its library over 50 percent original by next year.

The $8 billion that Netflix will set aside is going to be used for producing original TV shows and movies. The company has hinted this figure in the past and it reiterated the goal once again during its third-quarter earnings announcement.

The company’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos mentioned that a big portion of this $8 billion will be used for producing 30 new anime series and 80 new original films all of which will be released in 2018.

Original content is a matter of life and death for Netflix. Having a library that’s full of third-party titles is good for the short term, but what happens when the content owners start pulling the licensing deals? Netflix wants to make sure that it will be able to soar on the back of its original content if that ever happens.

Netflix also reiterated its goal that it wants to create a library that offers 50 percent of its original TV and film content. This isn’t a long-term goal. Netflix wants to get this done by the end of next year.

Google Offers Advanced Protection For Those At Risk Of Targeted Online Attacks

There are several common-sense steps that everyone should take in order to keep safe online. However, there are some people who can be at risk of being targeted online specifically. To help them prevent such attacks, Google is now offering a new feature called Advanced Protection. The feature will aid them in protecting themselves against accidental sharing, phishing, and fraudulent access to their accounts. It’s great for human rights workers, journalists, activists, and more.

The Advanced Protection feature will rely on Security Keys. These are small wireless devices or USBs that are needed to sign into accounts. They are said to be the most secure version of two-step verification as they need digital signatures and public key cryptography to confirm identity. An attacker who doesn’t have the Security Key is blocked automatically even if they have the user’s password.

Those who sign up for this program will also have to go through extra steps during the account recovery process. The steps will include additional questions and requests about why they have lost access to their account. It can also automatically limit full access to Gmail and Google Drive for certain apps. This will help prevent accidental sharing.

Any and all users with a personal Google Account can sign up for Advanced protection starting today.
