Google’s CEO To ‘Prioritize’ Fixing Their Hamburger Emoji

Given how small emojis are on our phones, do you actually pay attention to the details of a particular design? It seems that over the weekend, author Thomas Baekdal posted a seemingly innocuous tweet regarding the hamburger emoji created by various companies, such as Apple and Google, and found something rather “disturbing”.

As you can see in the image above, Google chose to put the cheese of their hamburger at the bottom of the patty, versus Apple who chose to put it on top. In fact Google’s decision seems to be the one that stands out amongst the rest because as The Verge points out, pretty much all other companies that have made their own emojis have placed the cheese on top of the patty.

In fact this debate grew to become so great to the point where Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai decided to weigh in on the issue, where he (presumably jokingly) said that he will be dropping everything on Monday to address this “mistake”. “Will drop everything else we are doing and address on Monday:) if folks can agree on the correct way to do this!”

Of course this was all made in good fun and it’s nice to sometimes see the internet not take itself so seriously, but that being said, what do you guys make of this great burger debate? Is Google’s decision to put the cheese beneath the patty a good choice, or does it really not matter at the end of the day?

First Hands-On Impression For The iPhone X Is Now Live

The iPhone X is set for a release on the 3rd of November, which means that following that date, we expect that there will be a slew of reviews of the upcoming phone. However if you can’t wait that long, not to worry because it looks like the first hands-on impression for the iPhone X is now live (unless you count that particular viral video that cost an Apple engineer his job).

Published in WIRED by Steven Levy (via 9to5Mac), this is an early hands-on impression of Apple’s latest flagship that gives us a brief idea of how the phone performs. It should be noted that Levy was one of the four journalists who reviewed the original iPhone back in 2007 when it first came out, which is why Apple decided to give Levy the chance to review the handset earlier.

Levy’s review is quite comprehensive as he puts the phone and its key features through its paces, and if you’re wondering how Face ID performs, it seems that there is a bit of a learning curve. He notes that the feature appears to be pretty secure and that it couldn’t be tricked into unlocking by someone else or using a photograph of his face. However like we said, there is a bit of a learning curve involved in order to figure out how to get it working smoothly.

He also touches on the camera of the phone, which he claims is a major upgrade, along with the better battery life which allowed him to get through a full day of usage, although we suppose your mileage may vary here. In any case the full review can be found on WIRED’s website so head on over if you want to know more about the handset.

Alleged Galaxy S9 Diagram Leaked, Hints At Slight Design Change

With all the excitement surrounding the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X out of the way, we suppose the next handset that many are anticipating will most likely be the Samsung Galaxy S9 which is due in 2018. This is because many are probably wondering what Samsung has up their sleeves that could trump Apple’s announcement.

The rumor mill for the Galaxy S9 has already begun, and the folks at Tech Droider have recently published several diagrams that are allegedly that of the Galaxy S9 and the S9+. We should point out that there’s no way to verify if these diagrams are the real deal, or if they’re simply fan-made images or mockups, so take it with a grain of salt for now.

However working under the assumption that it could be true, it seems that Samsung won’t be changing much in terms of design of the phone, save for the chin of the handset which appears to be much thinner than that of its predecessors, the Galaxy S8 and S8+. Apart from that it looks like there won’t be much changes made to it.

As for the rumored specs, it seems that the report is suggesting that we could be looking at facial recognition as a security feature. It also suggests that Samsung is still trying to get the under-display fingerprint scanner to work, and that if it does it could be moved to the back again. This is a bit of a hotly-debated rumored as there are some camps who believe that the front-mounted fingerprint sensor could debut in the Galaxy S9, while others don’t, but like we said given that it’s all rumors for now, do take it with a grain of salt.

1.7 Million SNES Classic Units Shipped As Of September 30

After what seemed like a dark past few years following the unsuccessful launch and release of the Wii U, things are definitely turning around for Nintendo. In a tweet by The Wall Street Journal’s Takashi Mochizuki, it looks like Nintendo’s attempts at relaunching classic consoles is turning out pretty well for the company.

According to the numbers, it seems that Nintendo has managed to ship as many as 1.7 million units of the recently-launched SNES Classic as of the 30th of September, 2017. This means that at this time of writing, we expect that Nintendo has probably managed to ship more than that. We should point out that this is the number of units shipped, not sold, so there is a difference, but usually they tend to be pretty close since companies tend to ship what they think is the demand.

This news doesn’t really come as a surprise as earlier this month, the SNES Classic was reported to have outsold the Switch when we’re looking at first week sales. The console is said to have sold 368,913 units in its first week, while the Switch managed 330,637. Of course the Switch has since gone on to sell over 7 million units to date, but it’s still a pretty impressive feat all the same.

Nintendo is also expected to bring back the NES Classic next year, which was the console that was relaunched prior to the SNES Classic. There have also been rumors that a N64 Classic and Game Boy Classic could be in the works for the future, both of which we reckon should also be just as well-received, if not more so.

World Of Warcraft Designer Doesn’t Think VR MMOs Will Happen Soon

Right now when it comes to “reality” technology, we are looking at the likes of augmented and virtual reality. While augmented reality is meant to enhance the real world around us, virtual reality is meant to transport us into a different place and provide a more immersive experience, whether it be for gaming, movies, browsing the internet, and so on.

In fact VR seems to be cutout for gaming, but if you think that maybe we could be getting VR MMOs in the near future, not everyone seems to be too optimistic on that prospect. Speaking at the View Conference in Italy, former Blizzard executive and World of Warcraft designer Rob Pardo shared his thoughts on the idea of VR and MMOs mixing together, which unfortunately were a bit pessimistic.

According Pardo, “I think we’re a long way away from that happening.” Pardo also goes on to explain the complications and complexity needed to pull it off, such as making VR headsets light enough to be worn for hours on end, and also how it should not make the wearer sick, and also creating an input device that would work great for MMOs.

While his current opinion does seem a bit pessimistic, Pardo believes that the future will eventually come, just not anytime soon. “I just think it’s going to be a really long time until we see something as complex as an MMORPG in VR. But one day, I’m sure one day we’ll see the Holodeck – I just don’t think it’s any time soon.”

Alpine iLX-107 CarPlay review: Siri goes wireless

CarPlay isn’t new. Introduced in 2014, it was Apple’s first foray into the automotive space. It might be the precursor to Titan, or a standalone product meant as a stopgap for the time we’re in, where Apple’s own automated vehicle platform is still just a beta project. Either way, it’s here. It’s a tangible, working product. And for the first … Continue reading

DNA replication caught on film for the first time undermines textbooks

The image you see here isn’t of the USS Enterprise in warp, it’s an image of DNA replication captured for the first time. The interesting part is that the replication of DNA isn’t what scientists and researchers expected. In fact, the film has undermined a great deal of what is written in textbooks. This marks the first time that scientists … Continue reading

Nintendo says Switch will beat Wii U total sales within its first year

The Switch is beginning to pay off for Nintendo. The new console is selling so well that the Japanese firm said today it is likely to outsell the Wii U, its predecessor, within one year of its release. Today Nintendo raised its prediction for total Switch sales over its financial year — which runs April-March — to 14 million units from an initial 10 million. If it can hit that… Read More
