Production Of iPhone X’s ‘Face ID’ Components Are Now Stable

One of the key features of the upcoming iPhone X (apart from its OLED screen and bezel-less display) is Face ID. This will be a new security feature of the iPhone that will replace Touch ID. However it given that it is a new hardware feature, unsurprisingly there have been reports that suggested that the complexity is what led the iPhone X to launching at a later date.

It is also one of the alleged reasons why the iPhone X is said to be in short supply at launch, but apparently things are already improving. According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, he claims in his latest investor note that production of the components needed for Face ID are now “stable” and that any struggles Apple and their suppliers had previously experience will not repeat itself for future iPhone X production as well as 2018’s models.

Kuo writes, “We believe the supply of both components are now stable, leaving no need to switch to other solutions.” What this (hopefully) means is that the iPhone X’s production can now proceed smoothly and that Apple will be able to better manage their supply, which could lead to shorter waiting times.

Right now the estimated waiting times for the iPhone X is around 5-6 weeks, although one analyst has suggested that Apple is merely playing conservative and that customers could potentially receive their orders earlier than expected, which is what some iPhone X customers have been seeing.

Google Considered Bundling Earphones With The Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL

Several years ago it was almost a guarantee that every phone that you bought would come bundled with a pair of earphones. It didn’t matter that for the most part they were cheap and flimsy, it was still a welcome bonus and useful for those who might not particularly care so much about sound, but more about functionality and convenience.

However Google hasn’t really been bundling headphones with its smartphones, and the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are no exception, but it seems that at one point in time, this was something that Google had actually considered. In a tweet by developer Lucas Everett (via Android Police), it seems that he received a Pixel 2 handset from Verizon that came with packaging for what appeared to be earbud-styled headphones inside of the box.

There was also an included leaflet that suggested that the Pixel 2 would have been bundled with a pair of headphones and a USB-C adapter. Google has since confirmed that the packaging is real and that it was an early design, meaning that at some point in time the company did seriously bundling earphones with the handset, but ultimately chose not to.

We’re not sure what prompted them to change their minds, but regardless if you do need a pair of headphones to go with your new Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL phone, perhaps the Pixel Buds could be worth considering.

Nintendo Switch GameCube Controller Support Was An ‘Accident’

Buying the Nintendo Switch’s Pro Controller isn’t exactly cheap, which is why some gamers have turned to cheaper third-party solutions, and it also explains why some gamers were pretty chuffed when they discovered that in the Nintendo Switch firmware update to version 4.0, support for the GameCube controller was added.

Now Nintendo did not announce the support officially but it was quickly discovered by many gamers and subsequent videos have since been uploaded onto YouTube and other social media platforms. However as it turns out, adding support for the GameCube controller was actually an accident, or at least that’s according to Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime.

Speaking to Kotaku’s Stephen Totilo, Fils-Aime was quoted as saying, “In our latest system software update, it enables third-party peripherals to work on Nintendo Switch. As a result, the peripheral for Wii U that allows it to attach GameCube controllers also works. I think it’s fair to say, Stephen, that that peripheral working was as much a surprise to us as it was to consumers.”

Fils-Aime was also quick to dismiss the speculation that the support for the GameCube controllers was a sign that there could be announcement to be made regarding Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo Switch.

GameStop Launches ‘PowerPass’ Game Rental Service

The concept of borrowing videos to take home to watch and returning them later isn’t exactly new, but what about video games? It turns out that GameStop has plans to introduce a similar rental service for video game as the company has announced “PowerPass”, a service that is expected to be officially launched on the 19th of November.

This is according to an exclusive report from GameRant in which their source at the retailer confirmed their plans. Prior to this, GameStop’s PowerPass program was leaked in an ad but we guess with this confirmation, we know that it is real. How it works is pretty straightforward: gamers pay $60 for a 6-month membership where during that 6-month period, they will be able to swap used games as many times as they want. At the end of their membership, members will be able to choose a game to keep.

However there is a catch to this program and that is in order to participate, customers of GameStop need to be PowerUp Rewards members. The PowerUp Rewards membership has several tiers, some of which do carry an annual fee, but either way it’s something to take note of if you do plan on taking advantage of the PowerPass program.

That being said, it does sound like a pretty good idea. After all some games sound good in theory but don’t necessarily play well, which means that gamers can potentially save themselves a lot of money in the process by trying games that they might not necessarily plan on replaying or keeping.

Microsoft Denies Rumors That Xbox One X Shipments Have Been Delayed

Recently it seems that a particular rumor has been making its rounds on the internet in which it has suggested that the launch of the Xbox One X could be delayed. However the good news for those who pre-ordered the console or who are planning on buying the console is that the rumors have since been debunked.

This is according to a tweet by the Head of Xbox Phil Spencer himself in which he reassured gamers that shipments of the Xbox One X are “fine”. Presumably this means that the console is still well on track to being released on the 7th of November as previously planned. However we should remind gamers that a recent report has suggested that there could be some supply shortages at the start.

This is according to Xbox UK head Harvey Eagle who told GamesIndustry.biz that gamers might not be able to simply walk into a store and pick one up for themselves. “I can’t guarantee that stock will be available in launch week for people to just walk into a store and pick up. Demand is really high. I’d just encourage people if they want one at launch, to get moving.”

However Eagle reassured that Microsoft is expected to continue making weekly deliveries to retailers, so if you can’t find units at launch you can always try the following week or another store.
