A few months ago, WhatsApp announced that a billion users send messages on it daily — which is apparently the right time to introduce its own line of emojis. If you’re an iOS user, you might find them familiar, as the messenger’s set looks very simi…
There seems to be a resurgence these days when it comes to classic consoles. While companies like Sony and Microsoft are focused towards the future and creating insanely powerful consoles, we have other companies like Atari and Nintendo re-releasing consoles from back in the day.
As if you didn’t have enough to choose from, the folks at Retro Games Limited have announced that they will be releasing a mini version of the classic Commodore 64. For those unfamiliar, the Commodore 64 isn’t so much a console but more of a computer, although the version that Retro Games Limited will be releasing will be focusing on the gaming aspects of it.
There will be 64 games that will come preloaded onto the device and all gamers have to do is plug in the device to their TV and they’ll be good to go. We’re not sure if there are plans to eventually add more games, or if they will be going down the Nintendo route where the games are set and final. The full list of games can be found on its website.
It will be priced at $70 and while no specific release date has been set, it is expected to be released some time in 2018. It also seems that Retro Games Limited has plans to release a full sized version of the device later in 2018 as well, so if the Mini Commodore 64 doesn’t cut it for you, there’ll be a larger one available as well.

Back in August, drone maker DJI announced that they will be introducing a new privacy mode for their drones. Basically what this meant is that drone owners could operate their drones without data being transferred back to DJI’s servers, so for those concerned about their privacy, this was a welcome feature.
The good news is that in an announcement by DJI, it looks like the feature is now live and available to drone owners. According to the company, “Since Local Data Mode blocks all internet data, the DJI Pilot app will not be able to detect the location of the user, show the map and geofencing information such as No Fly Zones and temporary flight restrictions. In addition, it will not notify drone operators of firmware updates. Telemetry data on flight logs such as altitude, distance or speed will remain stored on the aircraft even if the user deactivates Local Data Mode.”
DJI is also making it a point to note that regardless of whether “Local Data Mode” is enabled or not, things like your photos and videos will be stored locally on the drone’s SD card, meaning that there will never be an instance that DJI will have access to that information unless users willingly choose to share it on the SkyPixel community or other websites.
Brendan Schulman, DJI’s Vice President of Policy and Legal Affairs adds, “DJI is committed to protecting the privacy of its customers’ photos, videos and flight logs. Local Data Mode will provide added assurances for customers with heightened data security needs.”

When it comes to smartphone batteries, stuffing in bigger batteries is a more obvious route when it comes to increasing battery life, although the downside to this is that it potentially makes the phone thicker, heavier, and maybe potentially cost more. This is where other aspects come into play, like processor efficiency, software optimization, and so on.
In fact Apple seems to have proven that point because in a recent battery life test conducted by PhoneArena, the iPhone 8 Plus’ battery life isn’t just Apple’s best yet, but it seems to have beaten out all the other flagship smartphones released recently. According to their findings based on their tests, the iPhone 8 Plus lasted 10 hours and 35 minutes, while other flagships like the Galaxy S8 lasted 8 hours 22 minutes, and the Note 8 lasting 7 hours 50 minutes.
Like we said, the iPhone 8 Plus also beat out other iPhones, like the smaller iPhone 8 which lasted 8 hours 37 minutes, the iPhone 7 which lasted 7 hours 46 minutes, and the iPhone 6s which managed 8 hours 15 minutes. That being said we should note that when it comes to battery life, your mileage may vary because we all use our phones differently, and we all have different settings.
However considering that just in terms of battery size alone, the iPhone 8 Plus features a 2,691mAh battery which is smaller than some of the competition, so if anything it is a testament to how things like processor efficiency and software optimization are things that more handset makers should consider if they’re hoping to get as much out of their batteries as possible.

If you’re someone who uses quite a bit of emojis when chatting with friends, then you’ll be interested to learn that WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger will be getting a new set of emojis that you can check out in the near future, although it seems that based on reports the emojis for either app will be different from each other.
According to Emojipedia, WhatsApp’s new emojis were discovered in the latest Android beta where it seems that for the most part, it has been inspired by the same emojis that Apple uses for its iOS platform. On the surface they might look similar but there are some subtle differences in their design.
As for Facebook Messenger, the app has always had its own set of emojis, but according to Android Police, it seems that Facebook has decided to revert the emojis back to the same emojis that the Facebook platform uses. According to a statement, “At this time, we’ve decided to end our support of the Messenger emoji set to focus our attention on other features that help people express themselves and make the Messenger experience fun and engaging.”
It is unclear why Facebook decided to shift things back, but basically if you liked the previous emojis then we guess that’s just too bad. In any case this is something users can look out for in future apps to either platform.

For Android users, having to wait for your OEM to push out an Android update can be a rather painful process since there is usually no fixed schedule. For example just because one company releases their update next week doesn’t mean that you will get your update the next week either as it largely depends on the manufacturer’s timetable of release.
However the good news is that for those who have bought HMD Global’s Nokia handsets, the company has recently confirmed that several Nokia smartphones will be receiving the update to Android 8.0 Oreo by the end of the year. This is according to HMD Global’s GM for Australia and New Zealand who confirmed that the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, and Nokia 6 would receive the Android 8.0 Oreo update in the next few months.
No specific dates were mentioned but given that we’re already in October, we guess owners of either handset won’t have to wait too long for it. As it stands, the Oreo update is already being tested on the Nokia 8 so we imagine that its release shouldn’t be too far off either. HMD seems to be doing a good job on the updates so far.
The company has also recently confirmed that all of its current handsets will receive the Android P update which should be released next year. Whether or not they’ll keep to their word remains to be seen as we have seen handset makers go back on their promises before.

Better late than never, right? Almost exactly a year after it was launched, Facebook is now making its standalone, data-saving Messenger Lite Android app available in the US, UK, and Canada. Not exactly markets you’d think are in dire need of data-saving features. That, of course, might be an unfair assumption so to keep things fair, Facebook is spreading the … Continue reading
