While it doesn’t have as aggressive a stance against open source as the old Microsoft did, Apple has never really been seen as an open source-friendly company. Which is somewhat ironic considering some of its core foundations are built on open source software, like the BSD kernel and the KHTML engine used by WebKit. So it’s not exactly a small … Continue reading
Motorcycle and automotive enthusiasts have the same trepidation when it comes to an electric future. Both groups fear that batteries might take some of the soul out of their rides. Automotive fans have discovered that while the sweet sounds of a V8 might be going away, the performance of cars like the Tesla P100D is certainly there. Perhaps motorcyclists will … Continue reading

Super Mario Odyssey is the next Mario installment that Nintendo will be releasing in the near future. However if you’re looking to relive a classic, then you might be interested to learn that arcade classic Mario Bros. has arrived for the Nintendo Switch via the platform’s eShop where it will cost gamers $8 to purchase it.
In case you’re unfamiliar, Mario Bros. is an arcade version of Mario where it will support up to two players at once. It will be played on a single screen where players have to guide their characters through the different levels and defeat enemies along the way. It will be different from Super Mario where you can jump on enemies to defeat them, and instead gamers will have to punch the floor to turn them over and kick them away to defeat them.
The game is a classic and if you grew up in that era chances are you might have played it before. Mario Bros. is one of the many classic titles that we can expect to arrive for the Switch, which also includes Super Mario Bros., Vs. Balloon Fight, and more, although the release dates for those games and pricing is still unclear.
In any case this particular title is already live so if you own the Switch, then head on over to the Nintendo eShop to get your hands on it.

It used to be that when we sorted and arranged our photos, we would have to do so manually. Some people choose to do it by date, some choose to do it by event, some choose to do it depending on the content, but thanks to modern technology and AI, sorting photos has become a breeze.
Now Apple has made various improvements and changes to its Photos app on iOS and macOS over the past few years, but it is clear that they’re far from done because according to a report from TechCrunch (via 9to5Mac), the Cupertino company has reportedly acquired a French computer vision startup by the name of Regained, whose technology specializes in being able to recognize content within photos.
When asked for confirmation, Apple issued a boilerplate response which reads, “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.” It is unclear how recent the acquisition might have been, but it has been suggested that some of Regained’s technology could have made it into the iPhone X’s Face ID technology.
In addition, TechCrunch claims that Regained’s technology goes beyond just identifying objects in photos, but can also determine which photo might be the best, such as when taking burst photos.

Devices like smartwatches, fitness trackers, and heart rate chest straps are designed to collect biometric data on the user, like their heart rate, distance traveled, calories burnt, and so on. However the problem with current wearables is that they need to be worn 24/7 if you want to monitor your vitals all the time, and given that battery life isn’t infinite, it isn’t ideal just yet.
However that might be a problem that researchers at Harvard could have solved as they have developed a smart tattoo that stays on the wearer’s body and can also offer up similar tracking features. This is done through the use of ink that can react to the composition of your interstitial fluid, so for example if the person is dehydrated or if their glucose levels go up, the ink will change color or grow in intensity.
This will come in handy for people like athletes who need to keep track of their body’s vitals, or diabetics who need to know if they might have consumed too much sugar. The researchers have also suggested that the ink could be invisible for those who don’t want everyone to know what’s going on in their bodies, and can only be read under certain types of light.
According to Ali Yetisen, one of the researchers involved, one potential use for these sensors could be for astronauts who will need constant health monitoring. Another researcher Nan Jiang adds, “The purpose of the work is to light the imagination of biotechnologists and stimulate public support for such efforts. These questions of how technology impacts our lives must be considered as carefully as the design of the molecular sensors patients may someday carry embedded in their skin.”

The problem with Android phones is that while Google does update its Android platform occasionally, updating devices in general usually falls under the onus of the handset maker, which means that unless you own a Nexus or Pixel handset, you may or may not receive an update in a timely manner.
As we have seen, companies such as Motorola have recently drawn the ire of their customers after promising in marketing materials to update a phone to Android 8.0 Oreo, but later backing out and then having to make good on their promise again. That being said for those who are thinking of getting a Nokia handset, you’ll be pleased to learn that your phones will be updated to at least Android P.
This is according to HMD Global, the company licensed to make Nokia handsets who claimed that all of the current Nokia smartphones made by the company will be receiving the Android P update, which assuming Google sticks to their plan should be released in 2018. This means that not only will the Nokia handsets receive the Android 8.0 Oreo update, but it should be good for at least one more major Android update next year.
Of course what happens beyond that remains to be seen and whether or not these Nokia devices will be eligible to receive Android Q or later is another story.

We’re sure that you have seen YouTube videos before where at the end, the video’s creator adds a clickable link at the end of the video for users to visit a website, like the creator’s blog, a patreon page, link to a crowdfunding platform, and so on. However it seems that Google is changing the way creators can add links at the end of videos.
According to a recent change, it seems that unless the video’s creator is enrolled in YouTube’s Partner Program, they will not be able to add clickable links at the end of videos. YouTube has since confirmed these changes and in a statement, it reads, “This update is meant to curb abuse and does not affect current YouTube partners or existing end cards. Additionally channels do not have to actually monetize any videos as part of this requirement.”
Basically if you’re already part of the YouTube Partner Program, then this change won’t affect you. However if you’re a small channel that’s still growing or if you have no intention of being part of the Partner Program, then you won’t be able to add clickable links in videos. This can be troublesome especially when you consider that to be part of the program, you will need at least 10,000 channel views and be approved as well.
This will no doubt hamper the efforts of smaller channels, and while external links can still be added to YouTube’s description section, it’s not quite the same as being able to click it while in the video itself.
