Xbox One Game Gifting Feature Available To Some Xbox Insiders

Gifting games to friends using platforms like Steam isn’t new, but for some reason Xbox One gamers do not have access to such a feature, at least not yet. However the good news is that according to a report from Windows Central, the game gifting feature appears to be rolling out to some Xbox Insiders.

Prior to this one of the ways that gamers could gift games to other gamers would be to purchase a physical copy of the game and give it to them, or purchase a gift card. While both these methods work just fine, we suppose the option of being able to gift a game directly does have a more personal touch added to it, and like we said the feature seems to be live and functional for Xbox Insiders running 1710 preview builds.

According to the report, the feature is pretty straightforward in terms of how it works, where users can choose to send a gift using the person’s email address or their Xbox Live Gamertag and attach a personal message to it, which is pretty standard as far as online gifting is concerned.

The person receiving the game will receive a notification in their email with a redeemable 25-digit prepaid code that can be redeemed via Xbox Live to any Microsoft account. Presumably this feature should be announced soon as it appears to already be functional, so we’ll be keeping an eye out for it and any additional details.

Apple Investigating Possible iPhone 8 Plus Battery Failures

We’re sure that following the exploding Samsung Galaxy Note 7 handsets from last year that not only is Samsung worried about a repeat performance this year, but so are many other handset manufacturers who probably want to avoid the bad publicity that comes with it. Unfortunately for Apple it looks like it might have begun.

So far it seems that there have been two reports that the newly launched iPhone 8 Plus could be facing some battery issues. One case comes from Taiwan in which due to battery failure, it caused the lithium-ion battery in the iPhone to swell and break open the chassis of the handset. The second case, also similar in nature, came from Japan.

Now before you guys start to panic, note that these are the only two reported cases so far, which means that they could simply be an anomaly as opposed to it being a serious manufacturing issue. With Apple manufacturing millions of iPhones, there are bound to be a few hardware defects, and thankfully none of these phones have exploded.

Apple has acknowledged the reports and in a statement made to MacRumors, an Apple spokeswoman said that the company is looking into it. So far there haven’t been any other reports that we know of so it looks like for now, these are just anomalies and hopefully it will stay that way.

FBI Not Required To Disclose iPhone Unlocking Details

As you might have heard, there was some fuss not too long ago about how the FBI requested Apple’s help in unlocking an iPhone belonging to one of the terrorists in the San Bernardino case. Apple did not oblige the FBI’s request which led to the FBI seeking third-party help in unlocking the device.

There have been some speculation as to who helped the FBI unlock the iPhone, but as far as the official details are concerned, it seems like we may never know as the courts have ruled that the FBI is not obligated to disclose their findings. This is according to a ruling passed by federal judge Tanya Chutkan who said that disclosing their findings could put the secret and the vendor at risk to cybersecurity attacks.

“It is logical and plausible that the vendor may be less capable than the FBI of protecting its proprietary information in the face of a cyber-attack. The FBI’s conclusion that releasing the name of the vendor to the general public could put the vendor’s systems, and thereby crucial information about the technology, at risk of incursion is a reasonable one.”

Details about pricing will also not be disclosed as it could attach a value to the unlocking technology which could also indicate its usefulness. “Releasing the purchase price would designate a finite value for the technology and help adversaries determine whether the FBI can broadly utilize the technology to access their encrypted devices.”

Nintendo Creators Program Won’t Let YouTubers Live Stream

One of the trends in recent years that has led to the rise in platforms like Twitch and YouTube Gaming is watching gamers stream their games live. This is great when a new game has been launched and people are curious as to whether or not it might be worth their money, and in addition to reviews and gameplay videos, watching someone play through a game live is another way of determining whether it could be worth your time and money.

Unfortunately it seems that gamers shouldn’t expect that for Nintendo games because in an update to the Nintendo Creators Program, YouTubers will no longer be allowed to live stream their games. For those unfamiliar, the Nintendo Creators Program is where Nintendo will allow YouTubers who post videos about their games to earn a portion of ad revenue, whereas prior to that all of the ad revenue for these videos would go straight to Nintendo.

With the change to the policy, live streaming will no longer fall under the Nintendo Creators Program. This means that broadcasters will have to choose to either live stream their videos on a non-registered account, or cancel their YouTube channel’s registration with the Nintendo Creators Program.

It is clear that many gamers are questioning the company’s decision and changes to the policy as it doesn’t make sense, but then again Nintendo has come up with some pretty controversial ideas in the past which has irked fans and gamers alike, so we suppose this shouldn’t be too surprising.

Researchers Create Super-Thin Sensors That Are Also Edible

One of the problems with transporting food to various parts of the world is that in some cases, certain types of food need to be kept at certain temperatures to maintain its freshness and to prevent it from going bad during transportation, such as fish, and researchers in Switzerland might have figured out a way to better manage such feats.

This is thanks to their work which has resulted in the creation of super-thin sensors that can help monitor food temperature, and the best part is that these sensors are edible by human beings, meaning that ingesting them won’t be harmful to the human body. These sensors measure 16 micrometers thin which is considerably thinner than a strand of human hair, and are made from a polymer created with corn and potato starch, magnesium, and water-soluble silicone dioxide and nitride.

According to the research team’s lead Giovanni Salvatore, “In preparation for transport to Europe, fish from Japan could be fitted with tiny temperature sensors, allowing them to be continuously monitored to ensure they are kept at a cool enough temperature.” So far based on their work, these sensors still require wired power where it is connected to a micro-battery, microprocessor, and a transmitter via cables.

However the researchers are looking into ways of powering the sensor and transmitting data wirelessly. Unfortunately as it stands, we won’t be seeing these sensors used publicly anytime soon as Salvatore notes that the creation of such sensors is time-intensive and expensive, but in the future who knows?
