Google Pixel 2 Pre-Orders Show It’s More Popular Than The Original

Google unveiled the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL handsets not too long ago. They’re the successors to the original Pixel and Pixel XL handsets that Google launched last year. The new smartphones have turned out to be more popular than their predecessors. Google has revealed that Pixel 2 pre-orders have been double that of the original Pixel.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has revealed that the company received double the number of Google Pixel 2 pre-orders that it did for the original Pixel on the first day. Pichai said that they were “more than double what they were last year.”

He didn’t reveal any figures, though, so it’s hard to ascertain right now just how many units of the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL the company has been able to sell so far. This also makes it difficult to judge the launch day performance of these smartphones with rivals like the Galaxy S8 and iPhone 8.

The Pixel 2 has been released to great reviews. The handset’s design, performance, and camera have all been praised. Google has taken some flak for display issues related to the Pixel 2 XL, though.

Pichai also revealed that Google is scaling its go-to-market strategies for the Pixel handsets and that it’s investing more in marketing and selling the handsets in more countries. It also plans on partnering with more carriers to further expand the availability of Google’s new smartphones.

MIT’s Artificial Intelligence Bot Writes Horror Stories

Artificial intelligence can do a lot of things and you can now add writing horror stories to that list. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed an artificial intelligence-powered bot that can write horror stories. Named Shelley, the researchers say that it’s the first collaborative AI horror writer in the world.

Pinar Yanardhag, a researcher on the project, revealed that Shelley is a deep learning based artificial intelligence bot that took her name from Mary Shelley, a real horror story writer.

The bot was initially trained on more than 140,000 horror stories on Reddit’s popular r/nosleep subreddit. The bot is now capable of generating random snippets based on what it has learned so far and it can continue a story given the text.

Shelley has co-authored more than 100 stories with Twitter users so far and “some of them are really scary,” Yanardhag says.

Shelley can be found spinning stories on Twitter. The bot tweets out a new horror story every hour with the hashtag #yourturn. It’s an invitation to humans who want to contribute to the story. They can do that by replying to Shelley’s original tweet. The bot will then reply again with the next part once it receives the reply.

Head over to Shelley’s Twitter page right now and get in on the action. It’s not every day you get a chance to co-author a horror story with a machine.

Apple Watch Series 3 With LTE Now Streams Music

When Apple unveiled the Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE, it pointed out that the cellular connectivity enables the smartwatch to stream music on its own. It doesn’t need to be hooked up to an iPhone or Wi-Fi network. However, this feature was missing when the smartwatch was releasing. Apple has now released a new software update for the wearable device that adds the ability to stream music over the cellular network.

Apple today released watchOS 4.1 which allows Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE owners to stream music from Apple Music. It also gives them access to an iCloud Music Library without requiring a connection to an iPhone.

The latest software update also brings a redesigned Music app as well as a new Radio app for streaming the Beats 1 and other Apple Music radio stations. Streaming music via Apple Music requires a subscription to the service.

Music streaming on the Apple Watch also works with the iTunes Match services. Users can access their songs from their iCloud Music Library as well which includes the tracks they’ve purchased on iTunes.

It’s not surprising that Apple has limited this feature to its own music streaming service. Whether or not it will ever allow Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE owners to stream music from the likes of Spotify and Google Play Music remains to be seen.

iOS 11.1 Released, Brings Wi-Fi Bug Fixes

The first major update for iOS 11 since the firmware was released last month is now rolling out. Apple today released iOS 11.1 for compatible devices. It’s an incremental update so users shouldn’t expect any new features when they update their devices. Some important security improvements are also included in this update.

iOS 11.1 isn’t the only software update that Apple has released today. The company is rolling out watchOS 4.1. The update enables the Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE to stream music on its own.

The firmware update that Apple has released today for iOS devices brings more than 70 new emoji. It also makes some minor tweaks. The 3D Touch option to open the app switcher by pressing down on the left side of the display is back. Apple surprisingly removed it from the original iOS 11 release last month.

iOS 11.1 also brings the fix for the Krack Wi-Fi vulnerability. The vulnerability affects nearly every Wi-Fi enabled device out there. It’s a flaw in the Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 encryption standard for traffic on Wi-Fi networks. Hackers can use the vulnerability to read and steal data flowing on a Wi-Fi network.

Apple is now rolling out iOS 11.1 for supported devices over the air. Users should receive OTA update notifications shortly.
