Verizon will allow 4K video streaming for $10 extra a month

Starting on November 3rd, Verizon customers who want to stream full 4K video on their phones can finally do so. Just two months ago, the company had split its unlimited plans into two tiers; one capped streaming at 480p, while the more expensive one…

Verizon Will No Longer Throttle Video Streaming

Earlier this year it was discovered that Verizon was throttling Netflix streams, although the company claimed that this was a test. Unfortunately it later proved to be true as Verizon later launched new unlimited data plans that throttled video streams, where users on the basic unlimited plans would have their videos capped at 480p quality on their phones.

However the good news is that  Verizon has decided to cancel their throttling plans. In a report from CNET, the carrier has announced that they will be bringing back full-quality video streaming for their plans. This is expected to come into effect on the 3rd of November, however it seems that there might be an additional charge of $10 if customers want to be able to stream in 4K.

It is unclear if this extra $10 is only to enable unlimited 4K streaming, or if you will have to pay $10 to unlock full-quality video streaming, although CNET’s report states that video will be delivered in its original resolution, so the quality will be dependent on whether or not your phone can support it, although we reckon in this day and age, most phones should have no problem streaming in at least 720p HD or better.

Steam Is Now Offering Digital Gift Cards

Gifting on Valve’s Steam gaming platform isn’t exactly new. In fact gamers have been gifting each other gifts for quite a while now, although the only downside is that you have to know what the person wants, which can be gleaned by looking at their wishlist. However if you’d rather just gift your friend money, that option is now available digitally as well.

Valve has finally added digital gift cards to its Steam gaming platform. This means that in addition to being able to purchase gift cards from the likes of GameStop or Best Buy, gamers now have the option and added convenience of being able to buy these gift cards digitally to add funds to their Steam wallet or give it to a friend.

Gamers will be able to make the purchase using a variety of payment services, ranging from your usual credit/debit cards, to using PayPal, or alternatively if you have Bitcoin lying around, you will be able to make payment using the cryptocurrency as well. As GamesBeat has noted, this feature seems to be only available via the Steam website at the moment and not the desktop app, but presumably it should be added to the desktop app soon.

With several Steam sales coming up, plus the holiday season, this could be a useful feature for sending someone a gift if you don’t know what game they would like.

Apple Reportedly Acquires Camera Sensor Company

Even massive tech corporations such as Apple cannot do everything themselves, which is why more often than not, these companies need to license technology from other companies, or acquire existing companies to bring their technology into the fold. According to the latest reports, Apple could have recently acquired a company that specializes in camera sensors.

In a report from Image Sensors World (via MacRumors), Apple is said to have acquired or at least hired some talent from a company called InVisage. According to the report, the deal is said to have been closed in July earlier this year. Image Sensors World points out several pieces of potential evidence that this acquisition could have been true, such as how the company has removed a news page and a list of employee profiles, and also several LinkedIn accounts of past InVisage employees who now list Apple as their place of employment.

One of InVisage’s key pieces of technology is QuantumFilm, in which its pixels are said to have over three times higher dynamic range, which will allow users to capture “supremely detailed images in almost any lighting condition where there is bright sky.” Assuming Apple did acquire the company, it would be hard to tell if the technology has been or will be implemented in future iPhones.

After all companies like Apple are constantly working on improving their products and features, so it’s hard to say if future iPhone/iPad camera improvements could be a direct result of this acquisition. In the meantime Apple has recently confirmed that they have acquired a wireless charging company based out of New Zealand.

Amazon Introduces Paid Subscriptions For ‘Premium’ Alexa Skills

When the Amazon Echo first arrived on the scene, many were surprised as this was not really something that they would have expected from the company. However the Echo devices and its digital assistant Alexa quickly gained ground, thanks to Amazon allowing third-party developers to create “skills” for the assistant.

For the most part the skills have been free, but not anymore because it looks like Amazon wants to monetize it. The company has recently announced that they will now be introducing paid subscriptions for “premium” Alexa skills. Right now it seems that one of the skills that will be taking advantage of this feature will be the Jeopardy! skill, where it will cost users $1.99 a month.

However the good news is that if you’re a Prime member, Amazon has stated that access to premium skills will be free. Presumably this is one of the ways that Amazon is trying to get customers to sign up for a Prime membership, which includes expedited/free shipping, exclusive deals, access to video/music streaming, and more.

In a statement provided by an Amazon spokesperson, “Bringing a subscription model to skills for Alexa will bring customers the benefit of new, engaging, and high-quality experiences while providing developers an additional way to earn money from their skills.”

Your Favorite Dating Apps Might Not Be As Secure As You Thought

Dating apps rely a lot on personal information about the user, after all that’s the point, right? This includes information like education, workplace, age, name, and even your location, since some dating apps like to try and connect users who are within a certain radius to each other, but unfortunately it seems that quite a few of the popular dating apps aren’t as secure as you think.

In a post on Kaspersky’s Securelist website, security researchers Roman Unuchek, Mikhail Kuzin, and Sergey Zelensky discovered that many dating apps aren’t particularly secure, and some of the apps listed are the pretty big ones, such as Tinder, Bumble, and OK Cupid, just to name a few.

According to the researchers, the security vulnerabilities range from being pretty mild, where they were able to find and identify users on various social media just by using their job and education that they’ve listed. There are more worrying security vulnerabilities where hackers could intercept traffic and find out the email address the user has used, not thanks to the discovery that quite a few of these dating apps have minimal HTTPS encryption, thus making it easier for hackers to intercept any data.

The researchers claim that they have since forwarded the information they discovered to the respective developers, and hopefully this is something that they will be addressing in future app updates, if they haven’t done so already.

DxOMark buys Nik Collection from Google to continue development
