Broadcom May Increase Bid For Qualcomm

Broadcom made an unsolicited $130 billion bid to acquire Qualcomm earlier this month. The company hasn’t put itself up for sale but Broadcom went ahead and bid $70 per share for the company anyway. Qualcomm took a few days to respond and ended up rejecting the bid. A recent report suggested that the company would be willing to sell at a higher price. Broadcom is now reportedly considering a revised bid for Qualcomm.

Broadcom is reportedly considering raising its offer to buy Qualcomm by offering more of its stock after consultations with several top Qualcomm shareholders, according to Reuters.

It’s unclear at this point in time when Broadcom is going to make its revised offer. Its ongoing preparations seem to suggest that it’s planning to apply pressure on Qualcomm to take part in negotiations. It plans on doing that by offering more to its shareholders and even threatening to replace Qualcomm’s board of directors.

Broadcom Chief Executive Hock Tan has previously said that he’s open to a takeover battle and that Broadcom is preparing to submit nominations for new directors by Qualcomm’s December 8th deadline.

Some of Qualcomm’s shareholders have indicated to Broadcom that they expect at least $80 per share to consider a deal. However, Broadcom’s board hasn’t decided on the level of any new offer just yet.

Facebook Messenger Cloning Streaks Feature From Snapchat

Facebook has a habit of cloning Snapchat features for its services. Take the Stories feature for example. Facebook has added ephemeral messaging and stories feature to Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and even Facebook proper. It now appears to be cloning Snapchat’s streaks feature. The feature encourages friends to message each other daily to keep up their streaks.

Facebook Messenger has started testing the streaks feature with select users. Similar to how it is on Snapchat, the feature will include an emoji status for anyone the user is currently in a streak with.

As previously mentioned, Facebook is only testing out this feature on limited accounts at this point in time. It’s unclear if the social network is going to expand the test to more users. It’s also unclear if and when it plans on rolling out this feature to all users.

Snapchat’s streaks feature is particularly liked by its young audience. It encourages users to send more snaps and even notifies users when their Snapstreak is about to expire.

If Facebook has decided to clone this feature as well and it’s not just a test that it’s running, then we can be sure to see the streaks feature being launch on services like Instagram and WhatsApp as well in the future.

Tesla Built The World’s Biggest Battery In Under 100 Days

Tesla had promised to help South Australia with its energy problems and it has followed through on that promise by building the world’s largest battery in under 100 days. The company has built the biggest lithium ion battery in the world in record time. Tesla CEO Elon Musk had tweeted at the time the contract was signed that “100 days from contract signature or it’s free.”

The local state government has sent out a press release confirming that the 100MW battery set has been completed. It’s now going to be energised and tested in the coming days.

The world’s largest lithium ion battery will help with South Australia’s crippling energy problems. The region will have backup power in place this summer. The Tesla Powerpacks will be connected to a windfarm.

The state had suffered a complete blackout in September last year which led to a very politicized debate about energy security. The massive power failure was blamed on the inability of renewable energy to meet usage requirements.

The battery from Tesla will now store significant amounts of energy from renewable sources like wind and solar. It will send it out to the grid when usage is high.

In the coming days, the battery will be tested to ensure that it’s optimized and that it meets government requirements.

Tesla and the South Australian government signed the deal at the end of September and that’s when the 100-day countdown began. Tesla has been able to deliver on its promise within two months. The entire project is said to have cost $50 million.

DJI Launches New Goggles For Drone Racers

Drone racing is a thing now. There are serious championships in which people compete. DJI today launched a new version of its DJI Goggles and they’re meant for drone racers. The company is calling this new product DJI Goggles RE, which is short for racing edition.

The original Goggles were available in white whereas the DJI Goggles RE are available in matte black with a red leather accent on the headband.

DJI Goggles RE are compatible with non-DJI branded droners as well as third-party flight controllers like the Naze and F3. Features include video streaming with the OcuSync Video Transmission Module and Sphere panoramic viewing.

Users have the ability to connect two pairs of goggles together so that another person and watch and control the drone alongside them. DJI is going to start shipping the DJI Goggles RE later this month for $549.
