Samsung has already made a name for itself in the mobile VR headset market with the Gear VR. The virtual reality headset relies on a supported Samsung smartphone to power virtual reality experiences. Samsung recently launched a more powerful headset that works with Windows 10, it’s called the Odyssey Mixed Reality Headset. The company has now hinted that its next mobile virtual reality headset is going to feature inside-out positional tracking.
The Samsung Odyssey Windows Mixed Reality headset features dual 3.5 inch AMOLED panels. It has an up to 110-degree field of view and refresh rate of up to 90Hz. Samsung developed it for the Windows 10 Mixed Reality platform so it’s considerably more powerful than the Gear VR headset.
Samsung Electronics VP Taeyong Kim revealed at Samsung’s Developer Conference recently that the company’s next virtual reality headset is going to feature Six Degrees of Freedom sensor and inside-out positional tracking.
“The question is, how do we combine the benefits of [Gear VR and Odyssey] together for our next VR system?,” he said, adding that this is the question that Samsung is asking itself at this point.
Whether or not Samsung will unveil this new headset at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show 2018 in January remains to be seen. The company hasn’t actually said anything about when this new mobile VR headset might be launched so we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.
