Galaxy S9 Design Changes Reportedly Not Significant

Samsung is due to launch its new flagship smartphone in a few months. We’ve already started hearing rumors and predictions about the Galaxy S9. The latest suggests that the Galaxy S9 design changes will not be significant. The upcoming handset is expected to be an incremental upgrade compared to its predecessor, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, since the Galaxy S8 has a pretty good design.

The often credible Evan Blass a.k.a @evleaks has tweeted that the Galaxy S9 is a “tock” device. Manufacturers often stick to a “tick, tock” method for their flagship smartphones.

The device gets a major redesign in the tick years and nominal upgrades in the tock years. This alternates annually so since the Galaxy S8 introduced a design change, the Galaxy S9 is expected to only refine it further.

As previously mentioned, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, given the fact that the Galaxy S8 has probably one of the best designs you can find on an Android-powered flagship today. Samsung will certainly appease its fans by further refining the Galaxy S8’s design.

The upcoming handset will be improved in other areas, though. It’s expected to feature a depth-sensing camera for improved facial recognition. It will also feature improved internals and the latest software experience from Samsung.

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ early next year.

OnePlus 5T Becomes Fastest Selling OnePlus Smartphone

It appears that quite a lot of OnePlus fans were waiting for the company’s new flagship smartphone to go on sale. It started selling the OnePlus 5T yesterday and the company has now said that the OnePlus 5T has become its fastest-selling smartphone ever. OnePlus has actually claimed that its new device broke previous launch day sales records.

OnePlus revealed on Twitter that the OnePlus 5T received a record-breaking response from its customers merely six hours after the device went on sale. However, the company did not specify precisely how many devices it sold. It only said that the OnePlus 5T is now the company’s fastest-selling device.

It’s not surprising to see that the OnePlus 5T has been very well received by the community. The handset is an upgraded version of the OnePlus 5 that was released earlier this year. The OnePlus 5 will now be discontinued when it sells out.

The biggest change is that the new handset comes with a brand new 6 inch bezel-less display. OnePlus has also made some decent improvements to the camera system as well.

Those who are interested in picking one up can head over to the OnePlus website right now and purchase the OnePlus 5T. Prices start at $499 for the 6GB RAM/64GB storage model.

Intel Chip Vulnerability Left Countless PCs Exposed

Intel’s Management Engine feature has been concern for many security researchers who feel that this remote administration feature is a ripe target for attackers. While the feature is certainly useful for IT managers, it does require deep system access which makes it a hard to resist target for attackers. If the Management Engine is compromised, it could give attackers complete control of the system. After several research groups discovered bugs in the feature, Intel sent out a security advisory confirming that vulnerabilities exist in the Management Engine.

A recent research caused Intel to perform a security audit on the feature. The audit revealed new vulnerabilities in Management Engine as well as in the remote server management tool Server Platform Services. Vulnerabilities were also discovered in the Trusted Execution Engine hardware authentication tool.

Almost every recent Intel chip is affected by these vulnerabilities and these chips power countless PCs, servers, and Internet of Things devices. Even if Intel releases security patches to OEMs, customers may not get them quickly as it will be up to the hardware companies to release those security updates.

Intel has put up a list of available firmware updates but there aren’t a lot of OEMs that have started rolling them out as yet, so the list leaves a lot to be desired.

“Businesses, systems administrators, and system owners using computers or devices that incorporate these Intel products should check with their equipment manufacturers or vendors for updates for their systems, and apply any applicable updates as soon as possible,” the company said in a statement.

Samsung May Release Galaxy S8 Android 8.0 Beta 3 Soon

Samsung launched an Android 8.0 Oreo beta program for the Galaxy S8 several weeks ago. Users in select markets who have received a spot on the program can try out the beta firmware before Oreo is released for the flagship smartphone. Samsung has released two beta firmware for the Galaxy S8 so far and it appears that the Android 8.0 Oreo beta 3 may be released soon for the Galaxy S8.

Samsung launched the Galaxy S8 Android 8.0 Oreo beta program earlier this month. The beta has been rolled out in the United States, South Korea, and the United Kingdom in the first phase.

The Samsung UK admin on the Samsung Members community has revealed that work on the third beta firmware for the Galaxy S8 is nearly complete and that it’s going to be released “very, very soon.” This was in response to a customer query about the expected release of the third beta.

What the company hasn’t revealed at this point in time is when the second phase of this beta program will take place. The beta is expected to be expanded to markets like India, China, and Germany in the second phase.

Samsung is yet to confirm when it’s going to release Android 8.0 Oreo for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ to the public. Some reports suggest that this might not happen before early next year.
