Have you wondered why it took Apple 3 years to come up with an answer to the Amazon Echo in the form of the HomePod? Apparently, it’s because it wasn’t really meant as an answer to the Echo. Bloomberg sources claim that work on the HomePod started…
Apple gained an enviable position in the music streaming market relatively quickly and if a new prediction is to be believed, it’s not content with just having a presence in the music streaming market. Apple is actually expected to launch a proper Netflix rival in two to three years which will offer subscribers original content for a monthly fee.
That’s what Loup Ventures will have you believe, even though Apple hasn’t said anything at all about launching its own video streaming service.
However, Apple has been investing significant amounts of money into original video content. It’s actually predicted to increase its original video content budget by an average of 54 percent every year through 2022..
That amount of money that it’s going to be spending isn’t as much compared to what Netflix and Amazon are spending on original content but the average growth in the spend is far greater than both.
The prediction also suggests that Apple won’t bog itself down with catalog licensing, meaning that its service probably won’t be hosting content from conventional networks and studios. The service will more or less offer its own original content exclusively and charge subscribers a monthly fee to access all of it.
Whether or not Apple ends up doing this remains to be seen. With services like Netflix heavily investing in original content to reduce their reliance on licensed content, it seems plausible for Apple to build out a streaming service just for its original content.

Google decided to cut the Amazon Echo Show’s access to YouTube back in September. The Echo Show is the first Alexa-powered device from Amazon that comes with its own display. This enables the device to more than what you can do with any other Echo device. It was possible to view YouTube videos on it previously until Google decided to yank support. Amazon Echo Show owners will be delighted to find out that YouTube is now back on the Echo Show.
Amazon had confirmed back then that Google decided to make YouTube unavailable on Echo Show “without explanation and without notification to customers.” Google said in its statement that it has been in negotiations with Amazon for a long time to fix the YouTube user experience on the Echo Show.
“Amazon’s implementation of YouTube on the Echo Show violates our terms of service, creating a broken user experience,” the company said.
The two appear to have worked out an arrangement as it’s now possible to stream YouTube videos on the Echo Show. That’s not all. Amazon has also added support for two other video streaming services, Vimeo and Dailymotion.
YouTube on Amazon Echo Show now has a new user interface which is similar to the UI that those of you who use YouTube on a tablet or computer will already be familiar with.

Facebook Messenger is one of the most widely used cross-platform messaging services. It’s used by hundreds of millions of people across the globe daily to send messages, photos, and more. Facebook heard from the community that users would like the ability to send and receive high resolution photos in Messenger. It has followed through on the feedback and has now added support for up to 4K photos on Facebook Messenger.
Starting today, Facebook Messenger users can send and receive photos of up to 4K resolution or 4,096 x 4,096 pixels per image. That is the highest quality that many smartphones support currently.
This change will certainly be very well received, given that more than 17 billion photos are sent through Messenger every single month. Even though the resolution has been bumped up, Facebook promises users that their photos will be sent just as quickly as before.
In order to start sharing photos in up to 4K resolution, users first need to update their Messenger app. Once they have the latest version, they can open a conversation and tap on the camera icon to select the photo that they want to send.
This feature is now rolling out on both iPhone and Android to users in the United States, Canada, Australia, France, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea. Support for 4K resolution photos on Messenger will be rolled out to additional countries in the coming weeks.

The YouTube TV standalone online TV streaming service continues to expand to more platforms. Google is also improving the user experience on platforms where the service is already available. Those who subscribe to YouTube TV and use an Android smartphone to stream TV online will be delighted to find out that it now has a picture-in-picture mode. This enables subscribers to continue watching their favorite shows while being able to do something else on their handset.
The latest update for YouTube TV adds support for the picture-in-picture mode. Users just need to tap on the home button and whatever they’re watching is going to float on the other app that they decide to launch. For example, they can fire off emails without missing a single second of their favorite game.
This is actually more of an Android 8.0 Oreo feature than it is a YouTube TV feature. That’s why those who have an Android handset that’s running version 8.0 Oreo will be the only ones that can take advantage of this feature.
Other online TV streaming service like Hulu and Sling TV don’t support this Oreo feature as yet but given that YouTube TV has added support for it now, it may only be a matter of time before they follow suit.
