If there’s anyone who’d know how much mobile data smartphone users consume, it’d be Google. From the myriad Google services to the millions of Android phones, Google has got the the means to calculate your mobile data consumption. Now the tech giant is giving users the ability to see that information for themselves with its new Datally app for Android. … Continue reading

There are apps out there that help users track their data consumption on their mobile devices. Heck, Google’s Android has the feature built into the operating system, although given that it is buried within the Settings menu, novice Android users might not be able to find it quite as easily, and that’s one of the reasons behind Google’s Datally launch.
The company has recently taken the wraps off a new app for Android called Datally and the idea behind the app is to help users manage their data, ultimately helping them to cut unnecessary data consumption by making them aware of how much data apps are consuming. There is even a feature that halts background data consumption at once, so if you know you’re not going to be using your phone for a while, or just want to cut down on the background processes, you can.
According to Josh Woodward, the product manager overseeing Datally, the idea for the app came when they saw the lengths some people went to conserve data, such as keeping their phones in airplane mode to prevent accidental use, turn it back on when they needed to check things, and then quickly turn it off.
However in this day and age where unlimited data plans are pretty much everywhere, not everyone has the need for such an app, save for those in emerging markets where data might be limited and/or expensive. However if you still don’t mind checking it out, head on over to Google Play for the download.

There is a chance that every now and then, you might come across posts or pages on Facebook in which it asks if you want to donate to a non-profit organization. Given how much time people spend on Facebook, it’s not surprising that charities and non-profits are using Facebook to reach out to the masses.
However as expected, whenever a donation is made, Facebook charges a small transaction fee of 5%. Transaction fees and administration fees are pretty common, but it can also hold some back from donating as they don’t like the idea that what they donate might not completely go to the charity, but Facebook is changing that as the company has announced that they will be eliminating transaction fees from donations made through its platform.
However it should be noted that the elimination of the transaction fee only applies to donations made to non-profit organizations. This means that if you’re looking to raise funds for something else completely, like a friend’s farewell party, medical bills for a family member, and so on, Facebook will still impose a 6.9% payment processing fee and will take 30 cents per donation.
In addition to announcing these changes, Facebook also revealed that they’ll be setting up a $50 million per year Facebook Donations fund. This will see Facebook match the donations on its platform to some causes, such as disaster relief.

The problem with most digital assistants is that for the most part, they can only handle one request at a time. This means that unlike a human where you could ask them multiple things at once, digital assistants handle one request at a time, and you usually have to wait for that request to be processed before you proceed to the next one.
It’s not terribly efficient, but that’s how it is right now. However it seems that has changed with Google Home, with some noticing that the smart speaker will now be able to support multiple commands at once – two to be specific. As CNET points out, this means that you can ask Google Home to turn on the TV and ask for the weather at the same time, as opposed to one after the other.
Note that this is not the Routines feature that was announced last month. For those unfamiliar, Routines is a feature announced at Google’s Pixel 2 event in October, where it’s sort of like a macro of commands where a single voice command, such as “Good morning”, can set off a chain of commands, like opening the blinds, adjusting the thermostat, getting the coffee brewing, and so on (assuming they’re all connected).
Right now it seems that the amount of commands you can string together at once is limited to two. We’re not sure if there are plans to expand beyond that, but we suppose two is plenty, at least until Routines has rolled out.

If you’ve made it one of your life’s goals to visit every single Disneyland in the world, you might want to add Japan to your list. But wait, doesn’t Japan already have its own Disneyland and DisneySea? Yes, you would be right, but a report from Mainichi (via Kotaku) has revealed that there are plans for a third Disneyland in the country.
At the moment it is unclear where the third Disneyland will be placed, but at the moment Tokyo already plays host to Disneyland and DisneySea, so we’re not sure if another Disneyland in the same area makes much sense, although we suppose they will want to consider an area that’s already popular with tourists, so maybe Osaka is a possibility.
Osaka already plays host to Universal Studios Japan which has seen a surge in popularity, thanks to the Harry Potter and Minions attractions. The report from Mainichi claims that this new park will feature new attractions, and is expected to cost close to $3 billion, with a Japanese style theme being planned for it.
Unfortunately it could be a very long time coming because construction is said to only begin in 2025, which means that it could be close to 2030 before it is complete. But hey, you can never be too old for Disneyland, right?

It appears the progress on the live-action Detective Pikachu movie is moving along nicely. Just the other day it was reported that the movie’s lead actor has been found, and now a report from The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the movie’s lead actress has also been found in the form of Kathryn Newton.
For those unfamiliar with Newton’s work, she starred in HBO’s Big Little Lies. Apparently Newton beat out the likes of Natalia Dyer, Haley Lu Richardson, and Katherine Langford, all of whom were said to be in the running for the role. Newton will join Justice Smith who will be the male lead in the movie. Newton’s role in the movie will be that of a journalist, who together with Smith will go on an adventure with Pikachu as they solve mysteries.
The plot of the story is also unclear at this point in time, save for the fact that it will be a Pokemon movie based on Detective Pikachu, but we expect additional details to be revealed at a later date. It will be interesting to see how this movie pans out. While the cartoon version of the Pokemon movie was a hit, in the past we’ve seen how live-action movies based on video games tend to flop.
Will this movie break that curse? It remains to be seen, although right now a release date for the movie has yet to be set.
