Samsung Launches Note 8 Upgrade Program Aimed At iPhone Users

It is no secret that Samsung and Apple don’t really get along, and as if the recent ad that Samsung launched targeting Apple wasn’t enough, the company is now actively trying to lure iPhone users away from Apple’s ecosystem and perhaps consider a Samsung, thanks to a newly launched upgrade program.

The program appears to be limited to South Korea only for now, but basically it offers iPhone users to rent a Galaxy Note 8 handset and see if they like it. The program will kick off from the 21st to the 27th of November, and it appears to be only limited to 10,000 participants. Those who are interested can sign up online and wait to be chosen.

Once a user has been selected, they will then have to pay around $45 in a participation fee as well as a deposit towards the Note 8 in its full price. Assuming that they do enjoy the Note 8 and would love to keep it, they’ll just have to pay the difference. As a bonus, Samsung Korea will also be giving those taking part in the program and who choose to upgrade a JBL Bluetooth speaker, display damage insurance for free, and discounts on other accessories.

For those who don’t want to continue using the phone, they’re free to return it and get their deposit back, minus the participation fee. We’re not sure if this is tempting enough to lure iPhone customers over, but we suppose it can’t hurt to try.

iMac Pro Could Feature Cellular Connectivity For Theft Protection

In the past we have seen how Apple has filed for patents for computers, like the MacBook, that could feature cellular connectivity. The basic idea is to give it access to mobile internet, meaning that like the iPhone or iPad with cellular, it can connect without having to rely on WiFi. However for the most part it has existed as a mere idea.

However that idea could soon be brought to life, thanks to a post on Pike’s Universum (via MacRumors) which has suggested that the iMac Pro could come with some kind of cellular connectivity that will allow users to keep track of their computer in the event of someone stealing it.

The site also adds that this feature will be “always on”, which means that in the event the thief turns off the computer, it can still be tracked. This might be a feature that comes in handy for offices that are planning to purchase a few iMac Pros and are looking for a way to potentially protect their investment. Given how much a computer costs, it makes sense that they’ll want some kind of protection.

This cellular connectivity rumor follows a previous rumor which suggested that the iMac Pro could feature an A10 Fusion chipset that will allow users to perform the “Hey Siri” voice command, in addition to other functions that could be offloaded from the main processor.

Skype Pulled From The China Apple App Store

Earlier this year, Apple pulled VPN apps from its App Store in China in order to comply with local laws and regulations. Now it looks like Apple is once again pulling apps from the App Store, and this time it includes certain phone and messaging apps, which includes Microsoft’s Skype.

In a statement made by an Apple spokesperson, “We have been notified by the Ministry of Public Security that a number of voice over internet protocol apps do not comply with local law. Therefore these apps have been removed from the App Store in China.” However while the app is no longer available for download, at least via Apple’s App Store, it is still functional, although we can’t say for sure if China plans to block its access completely as well.

The spokesperson also adds, “These apps remain available in all other markets where they do business.” Note that Apple’s App Store isn’t the only store that Skype has been pulled from as the report from the New York Times notes that the app has been taken down from other app stores that distributes the app as well.

Microsoft has confirmed the removal but apparently this is only “temporary”, and that they are working to have it reinstated as soon as possible. That being said, this removal will probably see Apple questioned once again. When the company removed VPN apps from its App Store in China, US Senators questioned Apple’s decision, suggesting that this could be seen as Apple enabling China’s censorship of the internet.
