Destiny 2 Gets An Official Ghost Skill For Alexa

When it comes to skills for Alexa, there are so many out there for all sorts of things, whether you want something mundane like the weather, the news, traffic updates, or calling you a cab, an Uber, or even ordering you food. This is largely thanks to the openness of Alexa which allows third-party developers to create skills for it.

This is also why it doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that Activision has its own set of Alexa skills as well for Bungie’s Destiny 2. Announced on Amazon’s website, this comes in the form of the Official Destiny 2 Ghost skill for Alexa. This will be voiced by actor Nolan North and will feature over 1,000 custom lines. It will help friends join clans, find friends, track clan achievements and progress, learn more about the characters in the game, manage your character’s inventory, and so on.

In fact as you can see in the photo above, Activision has also decided to launch a Limited Edition Destiny 2 Ghost speaker. This is a WiFi-enabled speaker which means that if you really want to get in the Destiny 2 spirit, get your hands on this and combine it with the Ghost skill and you’re good to go.

However it will be a limited edition device and is priced at $90 and is available for pre-order via Amazon’s website. It is expected to begin shipping on the 19th of December.

Jim Beam Unveils A Smart Decanter That Pours Bourbon On Command

One of the fun things about going out to a bar or restaurant is that you don’t have to make your own drinks. This means you can enjoy conversations with friends uninterrupted while you get plied with drinks throughout the night. Unfortunately that’s not entirely possible at home, short of hiring a personal bartender.

However bourbon-maker Jim Beam has the solution for you in the form of a smart decanter that is simply dubbed “Jim”. We haven’t actually tried it out for ourselves so we can speak to whether or not it works as advertised, but from what we can tell in the video above, Jim is capable of pouring you a new drink on command using just your voice.

The video does not state what digital assistant Jim is using, but it seems to be able to answer questions when asked. As The Verge points out, it almost looks like it is a gag you might expect on April Fools, but it is an actual product you can buy. According to the company, Jim is a limited edition device that is priced at $35 and will be available for purchase via Jim Beam’s website.

If you’re interested in a smart decanter that will pour you a glass of bourbon whenever you want, then look no further.

EA Cancelled Visceral’s Star Wars Game Because It Felt Too Linear

A report from last month revealed that EA had cancelled an upcoming Star Wars game that was being developed by Visceral, and in the process also shut the studio down. EA did not get into specifics behind the cancellation, other than saying that they were “listening to feedback” and that they felt that they need to “pivot the design”.

We might now have a better idea of why, according to a report from GamesIndustry.biz who quotes EA’s CFO Blake Jorgensen who spoke at the Credit Suisse 21st Annual Technology, Media & Telecom Conference. According to Jorgensen, it seemed that EA ultimately felt that perhaps the game that was being developed felt too linear.

“And we were trying to build a game that really pushed gameplay to the next level, and as we kept reviewing the game, it continued to look like a style of gaming, a much more linear game, that people don’t like as much today as they did five years ago or 10 years ago.” However all is not lost as Jorgensen stated that EA is looking to salvage as much as they can from the project. He also stated that EA is trying to retain as many of the Visceral staff as possible, and have been shuffling them around the company as much as possible.

That being said, there is a trend these days that seems to focus more on an open world concept rather than a linear approach. Even Nintendo approached The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with something of an open world concept, resulting in what many are calling one of the best games of 2017.

Amazon Expands Alexa And Echo Availability To Australia & New Zealand

While Amazon does ship to most parts of the world, not all of its products and services are available worldwide. For example Prime is still limited to a handful of countries, and there are also certain countries where customers need to find workarounds to purchase Kindle e-books. Amazon’s Alexa AI and its Echo series of speakers also aren’t exactly available worldwide either.

However that is slowly changing as Amazon has announced that they will be launching Alexa and their Echo speakers in Australia and New Zealand. According to Amazon, “Today, we’re excited to announce Amazon Alexa and Alexa-enabled devices are coming to Australia and New Zealand in early 2018. This will open up new opportunities for developers in Australia, New Zealand, and worldwide to build for Alexa and reach customers through voice-first experiences using the Alexa Skills Kit (ASK) and the Alexa Voice Service (AVS).”

Amazon also announced that the Alexa Skills Kit will be available starting from today, while the Alexa Voice Service will be coming soon. All of this means that local developers in Australia and New Zealand can start planning skills that they can use with Alexa, and so can local companies. The launch in Australia and New Zealand makes sense, especially when you consider that an earlier report suggested that Amazon was getting ready to launch in Australia (an official launch date has yet to be set).
