Essential Phone’s Camera App Updated With Portrait Mode

It used to be that cameras on phones were considered a novelty because back in the day, the quality of photos taken by such cameras left much to be desired. However fast forward to today, cameras can sometimes make or break a phone, or at least can affect a customer’s decision whether or not they want to buy that particular phone or not.

Now in our review of the Essential Phone, we found that the camera was one of the areas that felt a bit lacking, but the good news is that the folks at Essential have been working to improve it. In fact the company recently announced that they have updated the phone’s camera app where it will now feature portrait mode and reduced compression in a bid to improve image quality.

For those who don’t know what portrait mode is, it is starting to become a standard feature on flagship phones, where it helps to create a separation between your subject and the background, or as photographers would call “bokeh”. This is typically an effect you achieve with DSLRs or mirrorless cameras, but it has been finding its way onto smartphones thanks to dual lens systems and/or recreation through software.

The update for the Essential Phone is already live and available via the Google Play Store, s head on over if you’d like to get your hands on it.
