EA Temporarily Suspends Star Wars: Battlefront 2’s Microtransactions

There has been an ongoing debate regarding gaming features like loot boxes. Some are calling it gambling, while others claim that it isn’t, and perhaps to avoid further controversy, EA has announced that they will be temporarily suspending Star Wars: Battlefront 2’s microtransaction feature.

According to EA, “We’ve heard the concerns about potentially giving players unfair advantages. And we’ve heard that this is overshadowing an otherwise great game. This was never our intention. Sorry we didn’t get this right.” To that end the publisher has decided that microtransactions will not be a feature available for the game at this time.

The company adds, “We hear you loud and clear, so we’re turning off all in-game purchases. We will now spend more time listening, adjusting, balancing and tuning. This means that the option to purchase crystals in the game is now offline, and all progression will be earned through gameplay. The ability to purchase crystals in-game will become available at a later date, only after we’ve made changes to the game.”

No word on when it will be brought back, but gamers who have felt that this was an unfair system will be pleased to learn that everything can now be earned in-game through the good old fashioned way. In the meantime it also looks like Sledgehammer has delayed its own microtransaction feature for Call of Duty: WWII for a week albeit for a different reason.

Jake Gyllenhaal Rumored To Replace Ben Affleck As Batman

Right now Ben Affleck has taken on the mantle (and cowl) of Batman in the DCEU. However Affleck had never really seemed to be 100% committed to the role, and given what we’ve heard about the standalone Batman movie and the recent comments Affleck made about thinking of a graceful way to exit the role, we’re sure some are wondering who could be next?

According to a report from Campea (via Screen Rant), it seems that word on the street is that Jake Gyllenhaal could be tapped to play the caped crusader. The report claims that Matt Reeves, the new director for the standalone Batman movie, has Gyllenhaal as his top pick to play the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman and has apparently met with the actor.

However nothing has been confirmed yet so take it with a grain of salt for now. As Screen Rant notes, Gyllenhaal had previously auditioned for the role of Batman when Christopher Nolan was doing his trilogy, although as many are aware, that role was given to Christian Bale. It is also unclear if Gyllenhaal were to be cast as Batman, what it could mean for the Batman franchise and the DCEU.

Could it mean that we’re looking at yet another reboot? Doing so would throw the other movies out of sync, although we’re sure that moviegoers might be confused if Gyllenhaal were to be suddenly cast as Batman, although it wouldn’t be the first time that an actor is replaced during a movie series, but what do you guys? Could you see Gyllenhaal as Batman?

Flaw Found In Amazon Key That Could Disable The Cloud Cam

A couple of weeks ago, Amazon announced Amazon Key. This is basically a system that allows a courier to enter your home and leave your package in your home, which means that even if you’re not home you will still receive your packages as promised. This will cut down on delivery delays and also theft of packages when left on the front door.

If that wasn’t a little dubious already, security researchers at Rhino Security Labs have discovered a flaw in Amazon Key that could allow a courier to disable the Amazon Cloud Cam, which means that they could essentially turn off the security camera and rob you and you wouldn’t have any video evidence of that.

According to Ben Caudill, the founder of Rhino Security Labs, it pretty much renders the whole system moot as the Cloud Cam is what Amazon is trying to reassure customers will help keep an eye on things. That being said, Amazon has since told WIRED that they perform comprehensive background checks on drivers, and with every delivery connected to a driver, they can verify when a driver is at a location and are who they say they are before unlocking the door for them.

They also state that they will be issuing an update that will be able to quickly notify customers if their camera goes offline during a delivery. “Later this week we will deploy an update to more quickly provide notifications if the camera goes offline during delivery.”

The iPhone X’s TrueDepth Camera Can Be Used For 3D Animation

Apple’s TrueDepth camera system in the iPhone X is used to help authenticate users for Face ID. However it seems that in a pinch, the TrueDepth system could also be used for motion-capture and even 3D animation, thanks to a discovery by VFX artist Elisha Hung whose video you can check out above.

Unlike Siri and Touch ID in which Apple took a while before opening it up to third-party developers, Apple has given developers access to the same facial mesh system used by the Animoji feature. As Hung demonstrates in the video above, that information can be taken and transformed into a format understood by 3D editing software, which in turn results in a rather crude 3D animation.

Of course probably isn’t the most well-suited for higher-end productions, but if for whatever reason you need a quick capture of an object to render in 3D, or maybe for 3D animation, with the right tools the iPhone X’s TrueDepth camera should work in a pinch. We’re not sure if this was an intended effect of the TrueDepth system, but it is a wonderful discovery.

We expect that we’ll probably come across more apps and maybe even games in the future that could take advantage of this.

Apple Reportedly Working With Intel On 5G Hardware For Future iPhones

As it stands, Apple relies on components from both Qualcomm and Intel for the iPhone’s modem, but according to a report from Fast Company, it seems that future iPhones could use Intel’s hardware more or less exclusively. The report claims that Apple is working with Intel on 5G hardware for future iPhones.

Now you might be thinking that this could have something to do with the lawsuit that Apple and Qualcomm are embroiled in, and while that might have been the reason suggested in an earlier report, Fast Company’s report has indicated that this is purely for professional reasons, and that Intel is apparently willing to meet Apple’s needs when it comes to customizing their components in a way that Qualcomm will not.

The report also claims that Intel currently has a “small army” working on 5G hardware in order to catch up to the competition. Prior to this, there were reports that said that the iPhone would not offer its users gigabit download speeds, and apparently this had to do with the limitations in Intel’s hardware, which meant that even if Qualcomm’s hardware could hit those speeds, Apple would have artificially limited them to ensure an even user experience across the board.

That being said, none of this is official information for now so obviously it should be taken with a grain of salt, but we suppose we will find out in future teardowns if Apple has indeed decided to go with Intel for 5G hardware.
